Ray is the best character in the game. Why did it take them so long to make a flight character actually fun?

Once i got the hang of it, its realy good. Holy shit tails has the most annoying ability, if you jump twice get ready to wait 1000 years for him to gingerly float to the ground.

Last I checked he isn't as fast as Sonic. And the immunity to spikes is only on the first hit. Once he touches them in his shielded form he's vulnerable.

I thought ray was going to be useless since tails is a thing but after playing as ray, I find tails useless

ah i see, yeah im not sure about his speed but he is heavier. That shield is still natch, i wish i could play through the normal game as him.

Ray was better than Mighty.
Overall I still prefer Knuckles. Sonic with all abilities is also fun, dropdash was a good mechanic

I think they should have given him his wall jump while still keeping his ground pound and spike immunity, but also given him a lower jump and have him go through knuckles’ routes

Tails flight is balanced though. It's braindead to use, makes the game easy modo, but is also slow and cumbersome. While Ray's flight has more speed potential but is harder to pull off well and more risky to use.

Personally I think Knuckles is the one that needs tweaking, his climbing ability doesn't really do anything the others can't and his nerfed jump makes him the character I least want to play as and makes me groan if I get him in Encore Mode.

What if he could somehow do a spindash while clinging to walls, sending him up at a high rate of speed?

Knuckles jump never bothered me, since he has climbing and gliding.

It really fucks you over on boss fights

He can do that in Sonic Advance 3. This ability should be mandatory in all of Knuckles's appearances.

Playing S3AIR with flight cancel feels unusually great.

This. I was all hyped for Mighty because I was a bigger fan of his character as someone who played Chaotix as a kid and read a little bit of the Archie comics which had Mighty. But Ray was the standout character.

I am so used to play as Knuckles in 2d that it feels natural having less shots than other characters. But having problems with bosses I dont recall that, except for Death Eggrobo in Sonic 2

They should just make it faster and let you quickdrop like it is in SA1.

I didn't even know you could do that.

You could make it like SRB2 where you hold down to descend faster.

Or just do what Sonic Chaos and Triple Trouble did and allow for mid-air rolling. Frankly, it should be a thing in 2D games by default. There's absolutely no reason to be left defenseless after hitting a vertical spring. Even Mario gets the benefit of being able to stomp on enemies after hitting springs. It adds nothing to the challenge of the game and is just annoying when all you can do is just watch Sonic careen into a flying badnik even though you had ample time to react to it.

The wall jump was pretty busted that way. I can see why they decided to exclude it from Mania. We could argue about how much better Ray is than Tails with his glide and all that, but Mighty's wall climb makes Knuckles utterly obsolete by comparison. It was the right decision, even if I wish Mighty still had the move anyway.

He does this since Advance 1, and Project Hero brought it back in 3D.

Mighty has always felt like the least remarkable Sonic character to me. I never got to play him in anything official until Mania and he was not really that fun. He's not fun in fan stuff either and fans are usually pretty good at that kind of thing. Ray on the other hand was fun, it was like the cape in Mario world but you needed skill to use it effectively and not just a good sense of timing.

I never liked Mighty much either. He was a rejected Sonic design and always seemed too similar to him (and his Chaotix sprite being a Sonic edit didn't help). Mania Adventures tried to give him more personality but now he feels like a ripoff of Knuckles instead.

That's not true, there was a rejected armadillo design but it wasn't Mighty. Naoto Ohshima said Manabu Kusunoki designed Mighty and Ray exclusively for the arcade game. Kusunoki reasoned that in order to control like Sonic, the new characters would need to be animals that could have the same proportions as Sonic.

He went through some design changes before finally appearing in that game with his finalized design coming form Ohshima.

He's had a personality since the Chaotix manual that Mania Plus kept.

And they should use Bean's gimmick with bombs on him. Like, instead of spin dashing, he uses bombs and runs over them destroying everything on his path.
