ITT: Genuine opinions/gripes about Half-Life: Alyx Lemme start, game plays well, game looks fucking great, menus and everything are so god damn streamlined nicely. But jesus fucking christ can I get some fucking ammo here? How the fuck is ammo more abundant 5 years AFTER this game, then before? Not having enough ammo quite literally soft locks the game since you can't melee enemies for some ungodly reason. I've been soft locked so many times in some of these levels it's not even fucking funny. Also can Alyx please for the love of god shut the fuck up? She's too fucking talkative, why in gods name does telling Russel basic information need 6 lines of dialogue before they shut the fuck up?
then don't buy one, get one of the 200 dollar headsets lmao
Cooper Cruz
My only gripe is that I want a non-VR option. I feel like it has a lot of impact with the storyline and lore particularly surrounding the Gman and I don't like being left out because I don't want to drop $500 on a goddamn VR headset.
I'm glad that VR people got a good game, but I want a non-VR version to play.
James Nguyen
Are you a fucking retard? I've been playing on Hard and I literally haven't had any ammo problems.
Jason King
my main gripe is that the game is so fucking boring and easy. the ai is braindead retarded. if this game wasn't Half Life themed nobody would be playing it
Jaxon Powell
Fucking garbage. I don't own VR, and I have no intention of buying it for a shitty tech demo. Get the fuck out of here.
Leo Sanders
graphics/immersion is god-tier but gameplay is 2016-tier, just as i expected.
Christopher Morales
I'm playing on Hard too, and I can't find any fucking ammo to save my life. The combine are bullet sponges that literally 3 shot you if you try and peek them.
Cameron Perry
You sure convinced me with your hot and unpopular take you flaming faggot
Jaxon Morris
Here's a thought, are you shots actually hitting?
Ayden Ross
Are you breaking boxes and killing barnacles?
Matthew Brooks
Retarded AI should be expected for a Half Life game desu.
Luke Miller
Headshots are critical hits that to 2x damage
Jack Myers
>HL2babbies
Owen Hill
Eat a bowl full of razors you fucking tranny
Parker Fisher
they're garbage though
Ian Davis
HL1s AI isn't that great either, though it's considerably better than HL2.
Jaxson Thomas
I hope all AAA games are vr in the future. At least its a safe bet HL3 Will be another VR exclusive. Going back to 2d is nearly unbearable after finally getting a good vr title. Why am staring at a panel fissplaying a game when I could be inside the game
Asher Hill
wait, do regular ass boxes and barnacles give ammo?
Yeah they are hitting, but it takes like an entire mag to kill a regular ass white soldier
Sebastian Thomas
Odyssey+ would probably be enough for this game. this game doesnt do anything special with motion controls, you dont need great tracking.
Parker Brown
It ignores it and embraces it at the same time
Jonathan Bennett
Hey OP. What did you think of Jeff?
Sebastian Scott
>complains about VR being too expensive "Heres several cheaper alternatives!" >No! I don't want those cause they're garbage despite there being no proof that any lesser headset is garbage or lesser quality while WMR and Odyssey + have better FPS and Resolution then the Index at a cheaper price
Noah Howard
i have a bad feeling this will be the first and only AAA VR game. its a shame because the immersion is kino, VR with an actual budget is amazing
Brayden Wood
I'm taking a small break currently and checked achievements out of curiosity. I noticed that Hit and Run only has 0.1% unlocks, is it glitched or something? I thought getting captured by combine and Russel breaking you out were mandatory things at the end of prologue.
i agree mostly but HLA takes it to a new level. it's like they're stuck on journalist mode, idk if you own the game or not but if you don't try to find someone playing. i can literally just walk to the side and they'll shoot/lunge/attack where I was a full second or two ago, it's insanely bad.
Chase Turner
like every half-life game before it, it adds a ton of shit and a fuckton of retcons all at the same time.
Cooper Wilson
Rift-S fag here, I pretty much never notice SDE at all. I think the only time was when I was watching anime in bigscreen. On the other hand the onboard audio is hilariously shit but I just use headphones so that doesn't matter much
Robert Barnes
>better FPS what? enjoy having garbage tracking lmao
Joshua Garcia
nigga it's about your GPU/Mobo being up to date. If you have a 1060 and a USB-3 motherboard, you'll be fine t. running this game on max on a 1060 and it plays beautifully
Easton Adams
why use a quest and its shitty compressed visuals? the main thing this game has going for it are the production values
Adrian Morgan
Ok here we go, two birds one stone. Massive spoilers ahead.
So at the end, Alyx gets offered a chance to save her father in the future by Gman, she's not there in the actual event but she manages to kill the advisor with Gman's spacetime fuckshittery that was going to kill Eli. However, by doing this she vanishes from the reality where he was meant to die. (HL2:EP2) Eli KNOWS that it's their "mutual friend" who did it, and the game ends with him, and more importantly dog shows up, and gives gordon his crowbar. - Now all of this considered, if this is a TIME issue, then we shouldn't have met Alyx in HL2 at all, and she should have been gone as by law of time, if she was snatched in the past before future events happen, then those future events wouldn't come to pass where she was involved. So the fact she disappears means there could only be 1 alyx in that timeline. HOWEVER if it ISN'T timefuckery, then this is multiverse fuckery, which makes very, very big implications. Not to forget the story elements regarding Gman being imprisoned by the Combine, and how that plays in regarding Half life 2, and why he seems to defend the combine's assault on earth while he's being imprisoned by them AND supporting gordon to fuck them on multiple occasions. I honestly am starting to think that Gman is Gordon who manages to find time jumping technology on the Borealis, and he defends himself repeatedly so he can effectively be a god of sorts. It explains why he protects gordon but doesn't really care about anyone else.
Isaac White
>t. running this game on max on a 1060 and it plays beautifully did you update your graphic drivers or is using reprojection what you call "play beautifully"?
Cameron Wood
i'm selling my rift, i cant be immersed when I can literally see the pixels, it's just so hilariously bad the CV1 has to be the worst headset i've ever used, and even that one gets praise all the time
Gavin Johnson
Source has always been an optimized engine but Valve literally pulled some insane magic tricks with Source 2 to make this game run as well as it does while looking as good as it does.
Grayson Howard
>can't run a game well because user says so okay, i guess your right and my eyes are wrong at looking at this game running smoothly with no hiccups
Jayden Nguyen
God damnit you fucking timelets WHY CAN YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THIS.
Time travel DOES NOT WORK LIKE HOW YOU INSTINCTIVELY THINK IT DOES. Every single movie you've seen has been WRONG. Changing the past does NOT change your future, nor visa versa.
When Gman brought Alyx forward through time, it did NOT invalidate all the actions she did with Gordon in HL2, Episode 1 and Episode 2. What happened was her potential reality merged with her actuality in the warehouse. Gman brought her CONSCIOUSNESS forward and gave her force lightning shit to kill the Advisor, then he abducted her.
HER ACTIONS IN THE PREVIOUS GAMES WERE NOT ERASED FROM THIS, because they HAD to have taken place for the warehouse scene to even happen.
God damnit you fuckers get me angry. YOU'RE NOT THINKING FOURTH DIMENSIONALLY!
Austin Hughes
Questfag here. It's fine. Gonna look a little Questy but it's still immersive enough for me.
Hudson Davis
What if G-Man saw Alyx's immense grief, and put her unknowingly into a pocket dimension where she relives a fake past so G-Man can trick her into making the deal.
He probably erased her mind and was looking for potential employees, as he saved her life once and said she was, "far more then the initial appraisal"
Nathan Watson
>boohoo I can't just shoot everything and spray the walls with bullets >boohoo, there's a female voice in my game
If these are your only complaints the game is obviously a 10/10.
Henry Watson
Anyone else getting an RE vibe from this? the music and atmosphere reminds me of that
They need to add sprint for fucks sakes. Did they omit it because of the thumbstick issue?
Charles Anderson
No user, I mean... if you didn't notice: when Gman reverses time to where eli is in the advisors hands, alyx runs backwards to where she should be but she then just fades away.
Jeremiah Robinson
im not saaying it isn't my dude, it's that most of the time the peeps that say the game runs "well" on their PC's they have low console user standards and anything above 30fps looks fluid to them.
Adam Rogers
the game blatantly wasnt designed for smooth locomotion, its fucking obvious they shoehorned it in the last few months or something
Matthew Foster
time travel is impossible, it works however the fuck the writers want it to work
Ryan James
Unironically the first game to make me feel sick after an extended period of time. Although I think thats from being dehydrated over the game itself. Also the first VR game to make me feel like I was actually immersed in the world. Kind of, except unlike in a game like RE2, I haven't had any "OH FUCK OH SHIT" moments where something actually spooks me.
Adam Anderson
>I haven't had any "OH FUCK OH SHIT" moments where something actually spooks me. Really? Headcrabs alone does that shit for me. Also, that flashlight room
Andrew Roberts
Half-Life 3 confirmed.
Angel Barnes
Really? I'm a pussy. First time a headcrab jumped at me I nearly screamed. Then again the Rancor in Vader Immortal got me too so I guess I'm just weak. FNAF Help Wanted would make me shit myself.
Julian Gray
Someone said that you could make yourself walk faster in console commands.
Christopher Gutierrez
Just finished playing for 5-6 hours. Easily the best VR game so far and just a very good game in general. I don't think I actually have any major gripes so far. Maybe that it's too linear? I'm a little worried that I'll finish it too quickly because I don't use my VR rig often, and it'd be nice if there was a good amount of replay value so I could justify the absurd amount of money I spent on my headset + graphics card.
Jason Hernandez
>plays on Hard on his first run where he doesnt know whats coming up or where anything is >complains that the enemies are too hard
Anthony Gonzalez
Really enjoying playing it. The shotgun grunts are INTIMIDATING. Having one saunter around the corner unexpectedly produces a surprisingly strong flight or fight reaction.
Brayden Nelson
Personally I am a poorfag and not even hiding it, but very interested in VR stuff. Gameplay looks like I expected but what got me really sceptical is: >how much of teleportation movement is mandatory, like jumping and climbing through obstacles >how objects are limited interaction wise, so no opening bottles, ripping paper apart, breaking pencils or opening a package >this webm, which shows no way to directly interact with enemies, either by hands or objects Basically, pretty good for a VR game but Boneworks remains king for now.
Well at least youre prepared for the other two vr games valve has in the works. Lots of great sandbox games to kill time as well. Try Asgards Wrath if you havent yet, too.
Luis Powell
I didn't realize how much scarier the dark is in VR until the first flashlight sections. >I yelped
Jason Moore
The most I've gotten is a tiny bit startled by loud noises within in the beginning in the city. After that I haven't had been startled or scared at all.
Michael Fisher
Despite the braindead AI, the second half of the game by far blows the fuck out of Boneworks.
Jacob Young
boneworks has more interactivity but the immersion in alyx is on another level thanks to valve budget vs indiefags
Michael Martinez
what chapter you at? I'm at Arms Race currently, about to hit up the distillery, I stopped for like 2 hours to eat food but I keep fucking dying so it's a slow burn.
Seriously fuck the automatic combine alien niggers who fire like 30 rounds then stop and go again
Josiah Torres
I love VR but I must admit that's a little janky. Even the physics playground sidequest tech demo lets you bully the dummies by knocking them down and whacking them with magazines.
Samuel Carter
that's only on oled headsets. even the index has "laughable" grey blacks.
Alexander Wood
>people shill boneworks >people rip into alyx as a "tech demo"
>boneworks is literally a techdemo >alyx is a AAA game using boneworks techdemo tech
fucking lmfao
Dominic Jackson
>alyx is a AAA game using boneworks techdemo tech it doesnt though, the game is definitely lacking in this area compared to boneworks. it makes up for it everywhere else
Grayson Ward
>that entire section when you first find the flashlight FUCK THIS GAME
Josiah Jones
As someone who's played both, this remains LEAGUES above boneworks. Boneworks is fucking ass at every step and feels terrible to play. I hate to say it, but valve got it so fucking right that i'm excited for more shit to come out
Easton Howard
They're both great games and fulfill different niches in the VR market. I really don't get the hostility towards tech demos when the HL series is literally tech demos
Hunter Price
>genuine comparison >is mean Who hurt you? :(
Carson Walker
That's called making sacrifices. All games do it.
Joshua Richardson
Boneworks is fun to fuck around in, but the graphics and presentation in Alyx are top notch and blow Boneworks out of the water. Also I like the pistol in Alyx a lot more then the guns in boneworks honestly.
Owen Rivera
Why is the G-Man a soiboi?
Luis Richardson
>find the flashlight >its attached to a single zombie that looks different and menacing >wide open area and filled with shotgun ammo boxes >something's gonna fucking jump me >take 10 minutes of pre-caution and praying to god >take the flashlight >nothing happens >3 poison headcrabs jump on me suddenly
cost reduced CV1 with anti-SDE filter when? every other headset is either 10000 dollars or hilarious crap from the 90's
Logan Hughes
Blade and Sorcery > Boneworks Boneworks doesn't have silly Inquisitor helicopter lightsabers.
Chase Bailey
I am relieved, I really thought valve couldn't make good games anymore after aritfact and underlords Go fucking go make left 4 dead 3 since there hasn't been a good zombie killing game since l4d2
Jose Murphy
>cost reduced CV1 with anti-SDE filter when? HP just announced one.
Carter Barnes
So Yas Forums.
What was your first reaction to Jeff?
Ian Cooper
boneworks is not a game, most VR ""games"" are not games any more than a mobile app is.
Austin Thomas
Noone hurt me, I just honestly think the same way as: But I can't help but laugh when there's people out there who are willing to brainlessly rip into Alyx and call it X, and then promote X. It's either lazy trolling or they're honestly brainlets.
Luis Myers
>L4D3 VR muh dick
Ethan Lewis
>valve wont make portal vr because of motion sicklets fuck you niggers. why cant you have VR immunity like me
Wyatt Lewis
Neither does Blade and Sorcery without mods, to be fair.
Camden Cox
Say what you want about Valve's hyperautistic playtesting but the gravity gloves are some of the most astonishingly intuitive mechanics a game has ever had let alone a VR game. Like fuck it's so second nature that when you're done with say a 3 hour session, you sort of miss the fact that you can't just grab objects with the flick of a wrist.
Caleb Taylor
Boneworks is a genuinely terrible game. I have no idea how it gets any defense here. I hate it so much desu.
Justin Murphy
Just encountered combine soldiers again after the headcrab tunnels. I'm probably going slower than average, but the game is so damn immersive that I just want to take it all in.
Yeah I'll probably give Asgards Wrath a shot after this, HLA has rekindled my love for VR. It also helps that I upgraded to a 2080ti.
Isaac Bennett
Whoops, reply meant for
Parker Harris
Going to play Stormland after Alyx, since Stormland also looked good. Was thinking of buying Asgard's Wrath, but don't feel like dedicating over 100GB's to just one VR game.
Gabriel Lewis
>but the gravity gloves are some of the most astonishingly intuitive mechanics a game has ever had let alone a VR game Fucking this. I thought it was just some dumb way of teleporting things to your hand but it genuinely feels good because they implemented it right. I barely physically pick up stuff anymore because its just that damn fun
Still little pissed that they drop the ball by not adding a basic jump button and just resort to teleporting. Kind of iffy when they went through the effort on gravity gloves
Kayden Roberts
if someone wasn't interested in VR before HLA came out, they should just keep waiting until something great comes out. HLA isn't anything special
Lucas Harris
Honestly? same, it's like an unfinished game that people praise so fucking much for no reason
Logan Ward
I was pretty unsure about L4D in VR, but after playing alyx i'm completely on board
Eli Cooper
I wish you pulled your new mags out of your hip instead of your back. Makes no sense and its going against learned movements from every other VR shooter. And real life, come to think of it.
Luis White
this is probably why the AI is so bad, the game was probably designed with the teleport shit in mind so they never made the AI adjust to you just fucking strafing out of their way
