Played EX a few months back and I don't feel like going through it again, what's with the new chapter?
Really good game but the later levels get extremely laughable with the strict N64 enemy limits, throwing 8 barons at you one at a time isn't a challenge when you can just sidestep
The source port is decent. I bought the Switch version (because the only reason to buy Doom today is to play on go), and the source port runs well and with good controls.
The controls are the biggest advantage over the source port that Nerve made for Doom 1 and 2. The impression on these ports is that it is impossible to reconcile speed + accuracy on the analog stick, while on the Divinity source port it is possible to play on one level somewhat similar to keyboard + mouse.
In addition the Doom 64 has true wide screen, full screen, FOV adjustment, option to use the joycons gyroscope, option to reconfigure each button, etc. The only disadvantage compared to Doom 1 and 2 is the impossibility to choose the level you want and the lack of add ons.
The only problem with this version is that the Doom 64 map design is boring. The vast majority of combats are extremely basic, with low risk scenarios but where the player needs to use the ample ammunition to kill an excessive amount of the same tank enemies. It is like those wads made by children where they think that placing 10 Barons of Hell in a rectangular room will make the game difficult, not monotonous.
I played DOOM on the PS1, not sure if this is worth getting...
Having fun with it. It's like I'm transported by to my childhood being spooked by the music and sound effectss.
It's fine, but if you played EX then you played this version. Not sure why they removed freelook or autosaving, but it's a not a big deal. You're really just paying five bucks for a handful of new maps, which are pretty decent.
you'll be pleasantly surprised at how similar it is
Doom 64 is a completely different game than the Doom PS1 port.
>release a literally inferior version of a game that already has a better, free version on PC.
>plebs buy it and want to talk about it now that it's an ''''official'''' release
fuck off
It's scary. I'm not used to demons not being in monster closets and just appearing out of thin air. Plus the traps are much more brutal than Doom 1 or 2 I think.
I'm gonna try to get through it regardless, but it's hitting me like a demake version of Doom 3, which I didn't much enjoy
it just doesn't feel right on a non nintendo console

>friend tries to tell me that they are porting doom 64 to pc for the first time
>hes a consoomer so he didnt know about d64 absolution or EX
>i told him about these and he just says "oh but those dont count"
the last few levels are complete trash
can the opening credits thing be disabled? otherwise might as well stick to the original Ex
>can the opening credits thing be disabled?
Put -skipmovies in the launch options.
Played it on pc nearly a decade ago. When it got ported for free by the hacking community by dumping the levels into a modern source port engine. It was great.
I liked it but I run out of ammo a lot and am left to face countless barons with my fists.
Also, fuck pain elementals. Assholes.
good lad
minigun feels great in this game
not... cute... at all...
playing it for the first time. i think i like the weapons here more. the pistol actually does something. apparently its missing enemies from doom 2 though
It's fine, just EX but official. The new levels are really good.
he's like a big angry cat i want to pet him!
The re-release is literally the same as the free version you're praising, except this one has new content.
There's not a single bad level in Doom 64.
>Evil Sacrifice
>Wretched Vats
>Thy Glory
Kaiser knows how to make excellent maps. I'd pay for more.
>The re-release is literally the same as the free version you're praising, except this one has new content.
Not quite. Kaiser fixed a bunch of bugs. And the engine is a bit different. EX was heavily modified Doom to give it 64's feature set. But this takes that source and integrates into KEX, their custom middleware engine.
EX has a lot of problems. The music is wrong. You'd think more people would have noticed that. Breakdown is way too high pitched, and it ruins the atmosphere. This port seems to have fixed all the issues EX had, and it is closer to the N64 version by implementing 3-point bilinear and such.
GZDoom doesn't support Doom 64. It's getting tiring seeing people talk about it. Doom 64 was a fairly customized engine, and GZDoom doesn't support a lot of its features properly.
>kill Mother Demon in base game
>her sister freaks the fuck out
>kicks you out of Hell in fear
>Dooomguy immediate rushes back to Hell to kick her ass
I love the story of the new chapter, it's like the inverse of Sigil.
Sigil was really good.
Let me rephrase that: the re-release is what EX was supposed to be. Basically my point was that people are just jumping on the bandwagon to shit on something just because.
It absolutely was. I'd love to see Romero make levels for Doom 64.
Imagine if Duke Nukem: Zero Hour got a PC port. If Randy didn't own the IP we'd likely have gotten one by now.
DN:ZH runs on a HEAVILY modified version of BUILD, and was the most advanced BUILD engine game at the time of its release. It released the same day as WWII GI, and there were no other commercial BUILD games until Ion Fury 2 decades later.
"Why hasn't someone made a fan remake?" you ask. Well, it's more advanced than other Duke games. Also, a lot of BUILD modders have this weird anal devastation dislike of 3rd person games.
>No level select
Beating Hectic seems to be the only way. Fitting, really.
>watching review and shit for 64
>everybody has the brightness jacked all the way up
So the version on steam released with Eternal is the definitive Doom 64 experience?
>put it up just a cunt hair
perfectly understandable
>cranked up really high
don't understand that at all
Yes.
Doomguy is being pretty insensitive, she just wants to mourn the loss of her sibling.
The Mother Demon shouldn't have undone all of Doomguy's hard work.
How many levels did they add, anyway?
6 campaign levels and 1 'fun' level. They're really good levels, though.
the fan pc port is better done
This version is an updated Doom 64 EX, made by the same fucking guy. How fucking stupid are you people?
are there any good Doom 64 mods?
i heard that the secret levels are necessary to beat the game, do I need to be autistic and go back and do them if i haven't found them
The Demon Keys do two things, none of which are required. They upgrade the Unmaker, making it so strong the BFG blushes, and allows you to close the demon portals in the final boss fight to stop them from endlessly spawning in demons. None of those are required but will make your life easier.
Not necessary, they just make the last boss a joke.
I should clarify: the secret levels house the demon keys. Other than those the secret levels are just that.
Generally speaking, yes. The key rebinding menu is shitty, among other niggles, but it's the most faithful reproduction to date. And it will get patched, unlike Blood. Atari are dicks. Bethesda less so.
Doom 64 was Marty's first Doom game, which is partially why Doom Eternal has so many nods to it.
He's probably talking about D64: Retribution.
Failed spot check:
Hasn't done Hectic the right way
Hasn't used Passwords
Okay good I was enjoying running through blind in the dark
game is scary
>game is scary
youtube.com
>M6: Alpha Quadrant
is there any way to get out of this pitch black pit where i'm surrounded by spectres?
Against the wall there's an extremely thin set of zig-zagging stairs that goes upwards.
Is Hectic the cryptic secret level that is impossible to discover without seeing it in a guide?
Anyway, the big problem with Doom 64 is the devs' lack of imagination in offering creative battle scenarios. Maybe they did something bland on purpose because they thought it was the best approach for a console like N64.
The player has a lot of resources and is always very safe, and the "difficulty" often tries to spring from the fact that there are 6 Hell Knights in a room, which is not really difficult, just boring and time consuming.
thanks, whoever designed these levels sure loved hell knights by the way
>no autorun
not even worth the pirate, ex is better. haven't tried the new levels though
