I think the G-man observes more than guides. He doesn't intervene unless his "employers" tell him, or he for some unknown reason decides to intervene for his own personal gain, whatever that may be. At least that's how I conceive it all.

I just rewatched the Episode 2 ending and it felt as impactful as I remember. Now having gone back to this Alyx stuff I feel nothing. There's nothing cool about Alyx being stuffed in the void compared to the death of a major character who truly didn't deserve death.
