What is it about newer modern Ace Attorney that seems to have lost it's soul from the original trilogy? I mean the writing is one thing, we all know that feels different, but it just seems to be so moch more than that too. Is it the transition into 3d? I don't think the models or anis look that bad, and the music is still solid, albeit orchestral they compose quite well made and good fitting tracks. So what does it not have that it used to?
What is it about newer modern Ace Attorney that seems to have lost it's soul from the original trilogy...
They got a different writer after 3
Also, the AI games are still pretty good
>that game
>that translation
almost forgot this gold mine, thanks user
They should have pushed onward after AJ. Instead they basically rebooted the series. The only thing that ended up actually mattering from AJ is Apollo himself. Also Athena is shit.
I think I agree with everything you said. AJ being a timeskip soft reboot was not a bad thing, the cases and convoluted yet seemingly retarded conclusion are what made it one of the worst game in series. So they pretty much turned around and went back to Nick's post T&T life. You could even tell they wanted to do big things with Apollo with his subplot in 5-4&5 and in the finale of 6. But since he was essentially given a closure to his story they just wrote him off, or if he returns it's going to feel awkward and forced just like Nick's return was. I wonder if the next 2-3 games will give Athena an origin story add-on like Apollo got and give her an awkward character arc.
what game?
Phoenix Drive.
thanks
dunno about you man. I enjoyed Spirit of Justice personally. Dual Destinies was trash though. I'm just waiting for more AA. It's been so long.
how about the Layton crossover?
Athena has no reason to be a lawyer anymore. She should just go be a psychologist. Maybe call her in as an expert once in a while. Also for fuck's sake just tell Apollo and Trucy they're related already. You can't just relegate Trucy to being comic relief forever. The teasing they did in SoJ sort of pissed me off.
But Spirit of Justice is one of the best games in the series. Dual Destinies sucks, yeah, that I agree.
They can’t write Apollo off yet, they need address the fact that he and Trucy are related.
Did not like it at all. Too much Layton dick sucking. And the plot twist made no sense and contradicted a few cases. The writing definitely felt like a game where Level 5 and Capcom writers were fighting each other instead of coming up with something coherent.
Not him but I thought it was okay. Way more Layton than Ace Attorney though. Still amuses me how Layton is such a Gary Stu that they had to write him out of a big chunk of the game just to give Phoenix some of the limelight.
Will we ever get another Phoenix Drive?
sprites and old soundchips
...
I liked it but it was my first AA and Layton game.
Writing. That's it. Dual Destinies took the series from being about absurd and colorful people in a grounded world to completely fucking farcical.
Spirit of Justice, in spite of it's whackier moments, does give me hope for the future though.
AAI2>1>3>6>DGS>AAI1>2>5>4>>>>>>vsLayton
I agree with you guys that it was heavy Layton majority. I liked the multi-witness trial gimmick and magic in court was an interesting angle, but overall I do agree that the plot was a cobbled mess.
>And the plot twist made no sense and contradicted a few cases. The writing definitely felt like a game where Level 5 and Capcom writers were fighting each other instead of coming up with something coherent.
I want to agree with you, but a fair bit of it also does feel like a typical Layton game plot twist, they always do crazy bonkers shit like that that both is fantastic in scale but also pisses off people.
>Still amuses me how Layton is such a Gary Stu that they had to write him out of a big chunk of the game just to give Phoenix some of the limelight.
Literally the climax was to put Nick against Layton, only for Layton to hold his hand worse than Edgeworth in 1-3. I get it's supposed to be a "battle of the minds" kind of thing but it's so laughable how perfect Layton is compared to literally anyone else. .
If you liked it, try the main series. Every system and even IOS/Android devices can play it officially.
SoJ had the worst final villain in the series imo. At least when the Phantom was revealed, I felt it because he was my favorite new character.
>from being about absurd and colorful people in a grounded world
I pretty much agree that the Dark Age of the Law was handled so stupidly it almost felt tongue-and-cheek, and I agree with the writing being worse and 's complaint beigh valid, but cmon now, it's been silly since the moment they shows the Thinker Statue is also a clock.
I got all the main games after that because i liked the court sections.
I don't like the way the mobile version looks.
I think the series got too big.
The first three games were passion projects made by a small team.
The meiji era game was very good imo
Nah, she was okay, it’s the prosecutor that was underwhelming. They could’ve done much more with him. What a waste of a character.
>DGS
how do I play it?
My issue with the 3DS games was that they were more Japanese than usual. Some of which required you to know specific Japanese customs many might not be familiar enough with in order to find the right solutions for a given case.
DD had a Youkai town IIRC. What did SoJ had that was too japanese?
translation patch from scarlet study + hacked 3ds or legit android with jp app store
I'm not saying I don't like them, and it certainly gives me cool insight of some Japanese stuff I didn't know, but it really shits on it's own localizations when people in LA eating noodle burgers are suddenly talking about traditional Japanese performances. I often wonder if convoluted background text dumps are a staple for detective games now, because even if the integral concept isn't foreign to this IRL world it is still foreign to me. IDK, maybe the eastern audience felt the same way about Investigations 2's cake case or something.
Udon and rakugo.
I swear it’s like the writers do it on purpose.
oh shit, I hacked my 3ds. Does the ISO translation patch require any special software?
just install the game and patch AND enable game patching through gm9
...
It's kind of inevitable though, when the Layton games are all about how amazing he is and the Ace Attorney games are all about what an underdog Phoenix is.
>and the Ace Attorney games are all about what an underdog Phoenix is.
Wait, I think you're onto something. After the 3rd game, Nick seemed to be not a noob anymore requiring countless asspulls. Nick certainly seems to have matured and gotten good at his job. I recognize they make Apollo and Athena (especially Athena) carry the noob burden after that, but it doesn't feel the same. Maybe I feel like the "passing of the torch" is going on, but it doesn't really seem good if you just replace nervous scared green with more nervous scared green. Of course Apollo flopping is nothing like Athena flopping, bitch has a fucking panic attack in the courtroom. Maybe this just explains why I don't like Athena.
I really fucking liked the older tricky bastard Nick, he was cool as fuck and actually pretty terrifying in a way. The fact that he goes back to the goofy goody-two-shoes Nick really pissed me off.
I liked the starting idea of AJ and the fact that Nick continued to collect evidence for 7 years, but the fact that they did a 180° in the next game is retarded, they could've just expanded on the idea and solve the issues of AJ. On top of this, they made the worst fucking decision by introducing yet another new lawyer, athena feels realy out of place.
>The Phantom
He is literally beaten by the power of friendship fuck off
4*
So Android it is...
Fuck this world. Why did Nintendo have to go completely bonkers with region-lock for the 3DS?
Well, at least they revised that with the Switch.
if you have luma3ds you can do a region unlock
if you'd like I could also dig around for the cia
not him, but I wouldn't object to the idea, thanks
Fuck, I have DGS2 on file but not DGS. You can still check the typical places, and I know for a fact an user dumped it in one of these threads if you like archive digging.
I speak Japanese, so as long as the App Store isn't region-locked, that's no trouble.
Hardly walk around with my 3DS these days anyway.
AA needs a new cast every once in a while to keep it fresh.
I feel like the series became too over the top after a while. But the second trilogy also had a clear issue of not really having an endgame in mind.
The original three games were about Phoenix eventually becoming his own attorney and standing on his own feet. There was some tie-in with the Feys there, but ultimately it felt like a reasonable development route, especially since he had his own little arc with Edgeworth. Meanwhile, the second trilogy is about Apollo, except it's also about chessmater Phoenix, except now it's about the new girl, nevermind shelve her and make it about Maya coming back, actually nevermind it's about Apollo's ties to this country he never mentioned before and becoming an attorney there.
I think you hit the nail right on the head. AA 1-3 kept a solid focus on Nick's development with Maya's life as a B plot, and both characters had a proper beginning, middle, and end of that journey. With Apollo, his life is all over the place, his arc's ending felt rushed and out of nowhere. i had no clue AA6 was going to become heavily about him at the end until I started the last case. Athena also feels thrown in there with, like Apollo, a full backstory the first game she was introduced to supposedly "start" her journey from her old life into law. While I hope they don't fuck it up, I at the same time feel like I don't like her enough to not give a shit.
The DLC case for SoJ felt like the first "real" AA-written case in ages.
Link to Phoenix Drive?
Are we going to get AA7 anytime soon...?
www.phoenixdrive.gov/downloads/phoenixdrive
Every time I see a "lawyers react to Ace Attorney" the first thing anyone says is Mia would be kicked out of the court room for indecent attire. The whole time I harped on the trial proceedings that I never even considered that. I mean I get it, it's an anime game, but still interesting to consider.
>bring maya back for AA7
>she's barely relevant for most of the game
Probably. Atlus isn't going to kill the series.
It might be full 3D or something. Like walking around the crime scene.
6*
Cabanela is the best character
>Atlus
I meant Crapcom.
