Emulate, but don't miss it. It's really different in tone from 7,8, 12 and 13, but I'd argue it's one of the best.

It is very 'on rails' for the first half of the game, it's less you customising your perfect party and more about solving the combat puzzle with the mix of characters you're given. Initially you start with the classic RPG party after the Kidnapping tutorial but it soon starts mixing your team and and giving you odd combinations to test you.

Only FF7 and FF8 are worth getting into desu, the rest is just generic JRPG bullshit. Non-autist will drop any of these games after a few hours 95% of the times.

The part of the game where you have two white mages and a single physical fighter was a bit agonizing.

MoguriMod fixes backgrounds and also has a plug-in for PS1-style text. Not perfect, but works. Menu is same layout though.

I can’t really compare it to anything. It’s a great game about bros hanging out. It’s just underwhelming thinking about it as a FF game.

They also have (expensive) summons, which functionally are basically black magic, but still a 3 mage party when you're dealing with lots of random encounters is annoying. Luckily its only for a few levels.

That being said, as much as I love this game, who the FUCK thought a 1/256 steal rate for certain items was a good idea?

FF9 is a weird one. I played it recently when I was going through the PS1/PS2 FF's, and I was turned off at the start. Slow ass combat, garbage card game, and intially unlikable characters. If you got the remaster you can speed up the combat with the turbo function, but I would recommend finding the mod that changes the unplayabe x5 into a nice x2. The combat won't ever be too challenging so long as you steal every item from bosses to stay ahead of the curve, and synthisize good items when avaliable. Honestly it has a lot of flaws. If the start of the game didn't impress you, maybe look elsewhere, but its a decent entry in the franchise.

No. Hipsters like to gush about it's story, but it's just pretentious anime shlock. FF9 only has one good character, the black mage. Otherwise, the story only really cares about the hero, love interest, and main villain. Who are all awful.

And the content is super sparse. Play a dragon quest or a ps1 rpg that isnt final fantasy instead.
