tl;dr list is a joke, picks are pleb-tier games
>Persona 5
>Well written
What the fuck. Persona 5 is literally one of the most barebone skeleton of a story I ever read.
Its like they rewrote the games several times and went fuck this, here is the basic outline of the plot, just make dungeons and shit around it.
Good writing in games is tricky because it's not quite the same thing as a good story. points out Ace Attorney but I would say that it has an engaging/good story but not great writing.
Deus Ex, Portal, and Monkey Island 1-3 I would say definitely have excellent writing. I might also include Walking Dead and Dark Souls but I'm not as sure about those two.
>muh falls flat after kamoshida
that’s how you know you’re a retard
Return of the Obra Dinn
Firewatch
The Wolf Among Us

Unironically, the Megaman Zero games.
Although you need the context of the first five X games to really appreciate it.
New Vegas
LISA the painful
Dragon Age: Origins
Mass Effect 2
Arcanum
no others LMAO
>FFX
>Shitomata babby's first Asimov
yeah no kek
Obra Dinn had a solid narrative and excellent presentation/novelty value, but I cannot think of any lines or excerpts from it that are particularly memorable. I like the game a lot though. What are some examples of good/memorable writing for you? A lot of the dialogue just felt serviceable but unremarkable.
> Still SEETHING about NieR automata
It's pathetic at this point
Best game stores

Shiggy diggy doo
Ghost Trick
Not a game
It's a very simple hack and slash pushed by coomers
Moss "There you are. Collect your things, we..."
Evans "Where is the key?"
Moss "To that door? Gone."
Evans "Damn."
Moss "There's no time. We need to go."
Evans "Right. In you go."
Moss "What are you up to?"
Evans "Nothing good."
*GUNSHOT*
This exchange hit me hard.
That being said, I'd mostly agree with you that the dialouge isn't particularly amazing. I figured a game's writing included storyline, scenarios, pacing of events and stuff, since that'd all fall into the hands of the writer anyways.
red dead redemption 2
Do people really like Persona games for the "writing"?
Every theme is hamfisted and shoved down your throat. You can still enjoy the overall story and atmosphere sure, but there is absolutely nothing standing out in terms of the wrting

That's how bad snoy dropped the ball this generation, when some weebshit is the highest rated game on your console.
>428: Shibuya Scramble
fucking based
>Do people really like Persona games for the "writing"?
Yes. Thinking Persona 3's strengths were plot related is how you end up with shit like Persona 4 and 5. It's the best of the 3 because it had the least of it.
this
based
great list except for zelda
3 has the worst gameplay but the best writing and story. 5 is opposite
Creative and engaging story, distinct characters, funny dialogue, and stylish presentation. Nothing else really comes close.
I'll agree with New Vegas and semi-agree with Arcanum and LISA, but what on earth is good about ME2 or DAO? Their stories are presented well, sure, but that doesn't make them any good. DAO is about le generic evil dragon orc army chosen one prophesy to unite the races. 90% of ME2 is spent wandering around hiring dudes for a quatrillion dollar company to go fight a giant skeleton robot with glowing eyes. Again great presentation and some nice characters, but I don't think they can compensate for that laughably bad plot. ME1's plot was much more interesting.
Obra Dinn is cool because its a mystery game that actually forces you to put pieces together to figure out whats going on, but the actual plot was really basic. Merchant ship captain kidnapped some mermaids and the mermaids called monsters from the sea to rescue them until the captain started killing them until the last one relented and was released.
OOT has the best storytelling in video game history, aside from FF6 & Shadow of the Colossus.
Everyone knows New Vegas had the best writing in a videogame in the last decade and it's nowhere on the list, weird.
Nobody unironically thinks shit vegas is good
>Walking Dead S4
>Not Walking Dead S1
>Includes 999 but not VLR
Other than that this is the best list
Wow, it's almost like no one agrees with your shit taste opinion.
3 actually has the best gameplay by having most of it not interrupted by bullshit cutscenes and monthly dungeon setups. The notable thing about it was the unique and really well thought out structure at the time which no one picked up on and instead praised the whatever Evangelion knockoff of a plot.
Ah, we just disagree on what counts as good writing. For me 'good writing' is the fine details and specific lines and description that appear in a story, whereas the broad strokes would be the narrative/story. I've read books/played games with good writing but bad stories and bad writing but good stories.
I agree that the general scenario in Obra Dinn is excellent and while I personally think the pacing is somewhat frontloaded (I was expecting a lot of spectacular events after the Kraken and nothing in the game ever surpassed that, with the crab people and MAYBE the escape being the only bits that came close) but can concede that otherwise the pacing is excellent.
>TWEWY
Baste
You were so clearly trolling that I figured I would just help out a bit.
holy shit.
watch a fucking movie.
I'm struggling to comprehend how anyone on Earth could be retarded enough to think Danganronpa is well written
>ME3
Mass Effect being on here at all is questionable but why the fuck would you choose 3
How the fuck can anyone find P5's extremely barebones dungeons and dumbed-down combat better than 3
3 might have kinda bland random dungeons but bland random dungeons are better than constructed dungeons so boring they might as well be random, because at least random dungeons have a bit more replay value and not so many fucking cutscenes
Gone Home isn't a game, though. It's art, and since games aren't art then that means Gone Home isn't a game.
TWD S1 is poorly written trash
When you try to replay it the story falls apart
Because season 2 completely undermines it
The only good section honestly was Kenny's family's death, And the Cannibals
But again this falls apart because S2 brings Kenny back regardless
Clementine is much more compelling character than Lee
Sunk cost fallacy. If you spend 30 hours reading vn garbage you need to justify it somehow
Red Dead Redemption 1
Halo 2
I know right, Danganronpa 2 is much better.
>When you try to replay it the story falls apart
Not all games are designed to be replayed, complaining that "choices don't matter" in a telltale game is completely missing the point
>Clementine is much more compelling character than Lee
What the fucking shit is this, how do you even come to that conclusion? Clem in S1 was literally just a vector for the player to base their choices on, Clem in S2 is a weird flanderized nothing character who has no agency and does nothing
God of War 2018
Earthbound
Hmmm yeah this is based, but what makes FF9 story special? Never played it,
