The crafting mechanic is terribly implemented and is just in place to make grinding more materials take longer which is made worse with limited inventory space and stacks being low numbers.

Once you have 3 moving into houses being built the random islands cease to have random villagers. No idea when they come back, but it blocks you from finding any new ones once you have 5 early on. Wish I knew that before I gave up island hopping and progressed. Not that I can't just cycle out villagers later though...
