Only in stills, like you posted. In motion XIII looks like crap. Look at Kyo's super, they couldn't even animate it and just made the screen black to throw on on some pretty effects. Older games like 02 look much better since they actually had full animation.

it looked good at the time but cost them too much money so SNK pretty much died. Also resulted in gutted movesets so fuck that, just give me decent looking 3D. Samsho was a step in the right direction after the PS2 graphics in XIV, I'm sure XV will be alright

They nearly went bankrupt from spending two games just to put out a game that had gimped versions of every character in it as well as a small roster by KOF standards just for the sake of good visuals. As nice as the game looks, I'd rather a KOF game where Terry has more than just 4 special moves. Just look at how small his movelist is compared to 02UM.

Going back to sprites was the right call but they fucked it all up by hiring gooks to make them. It's why XIII looks so good yet so horribly bad at the same time.

Every new king of fighters game deserves to die because they let codemasters do the ports instead of iron galaxy. The result was the most unplayable netcode to grace the earth. Even gives chaos breaker a run for it's money.

Because even at its "visual peak" it was overshadowed by games that had advanced animation techniques to go with high-quality sprites. Like the other anons in the thread said, they banked on the high-fidelity of the sprites to compensate for the overabundant shitty particle effects and underwhelming animation ( lots of frames !=good animation ). The relative absence of squash and stretch and breaking the joints is why it doesn't look as satisfying in motion as SF3, for example, whose characters are more kinetic and weighty.

2002 had recycled graphics from KOF96. Iori's walking animation had not changed until XI. Don't even give me that crap. The only character who ever got consistently redrawn was Athena.

I like the older games style better, XIII is very visually inconsistent with it's sparkly particle effects, and I hate how all the female characters are big headed cartoons, it doesn't match the rest of the cast's visual style at all.

none of these give a shit about the newer games desu. Aside from XIII having a small following, mexicans and south americans play 98/02 and the chinese like 97
