I'm a VR fag and even I don't think it's the future. At least not yet. I bought into VR years ago with the DK2. It's definitely cool and has a lot of potential but the big issue is ironically room scale. This was supposed to bring it to a whole new level. Walking around in a big area and exploring it to your hearts content. But "room scale" really just boils down to "stand in one spot and look around and occasionally move your arms". It's cool, but it's far from the full realization of what this technology can do. And the limiting factor is the games themselves.
If the point of room scale is to walk around and interact with the environment, why are so many games designed around standing in one spot and relying on joystick or teleportation methods of movement? It feels completely backwards and contrary to the entire point of room scale. I understand that there will obviously be limitations, but I think it can be done better if a game was built around these limitations, rather than trying to develop methods of transport to make a typical game work in VR. For example, a randomly generated dungeon game that is super claustrophobic. It takes your designated play area and builds a random maze mismash of hallways for you to go through. Think PT and its constantly changing hallways and environment but on a much smaller scale and in VR. It sounds like shit, but it would be a much cooler application for this kind of technology. Instead of standing in one spot you're actually walking through this seemingly always changing dungeon. No teleportation, no joystick movement. Just you. Walking. Bigger play area, bigger and better environment. Until games start being built this way, there is no way VR will ever reach its full potential. These games are still built as if they are regular games, meant to be played with a traditional controller or keyboard and mouse, and the VR still feels like it's tacked on due to these silly movement methods.
