They have to. They need to make some announcements and give some release dates before the end of the fiscal year (end of March) to satisfy their investors. Right now there isn't a single first-party game with a firm release date, and only one confirmed for 2020 in general.

The NYC nintendo store is closed. A big part of the nintendo community experience is going to the store to watch the direct live with all your nintendo bros. March is the end of the fiscal year, I think everyone's assumption was that they were going to wait for Animal Crossing to release, then with a clean slate finally tell everyone (investors included) what else is on the way later this year. They HAVE to, not for fans, but for the people that fucking invest in their company. There were some leaks saying they would do an indie world last week (proven true) and a normal direct slated for this week. The same entities also correctly predicted the animal crossing direct earlier in the month.
