He spams his gay ass insta slow debuff puppy, he gets hyper armor at seemingly random times, his iai attacks deal a shitgazillion damage and are effectively unblockable, he has like twice as much HP as the disguised Kelley version of him, and if you ever run out of ki his grapple is basically guaranteed death.
More importantly though, he's the first of the "powerful human samurai" bosses and a pretty big jump in difficulty from the few previous bosses.

Nioh and Sekiro barely play alike, fags.

coming from games like dark souls I'm okay with enemies with hyperarmor because it just means you have to respect the boss moveset
he does do a shitload of damage, but so do most bosses in the game to be fair. Learning to dodge through his running iai was a huge help for me

this. He just doesn't follow any rules. At times you feel like you're doing the right thing, you dodge an attack and try to punish..but nope. He just armors through it and you die because you did what you are supposed to do in a video game.

The problem isn't hyper armor, it's the fact that it only applies to certain moves.
In Dark Souls, at least until you get to 3, enemies either had hyper armor or they didn't, making it easy to adjust your tactics accordingly. The way it works here with hyper armor generally only applying to specific attacks means you can go in for a punish only to have him use a move you didn't know had hyper armor and get fucked for it.

Mainly speaking about the bosses in dark souls, they generally would hyper armor through everything you do until you got a rare stagger which was a damage opportunity. Treating the bosses in nioh the same way was helpful for me.

Different (customisable) MC, new levels, new enemies, reworked spirits/LW, reworked stats, new weapon types, expanded movesets for all other weapons, reworked weapon progression, and a few qol things here and there

Well I understand that, since I'm way past that point in the game. I'm just speaking from the perspective of a new player (because I definitely remember having trouble with this boss), especially since iirc every boss you face before this is a yokai, which function more like a typical Dark Souls boss like you described.

I actually ended up liking that boss the most because I knew what to expect from him and it was a good challenge
However, fuck the fight where his tonfa butt buddy jumps in at the end. I probably died to that fight more than anything else in the entire game.

Its only annoying when Yukimura does it because the moth lets him fucking fly and its a pain to keep a safe distance.
The fire horse is far less of an issue.
