It's considered great because of characters, story, presentation, mise en scène, camerawork, soundtrack, voice acting, themes, gamefeel, animations, art design, character design, robot design, etc., numbnuts.

I thought you were gonna say it's almost a "moviegame" with mediocre gameplay and it gets a pass anyway. I was gonna answer yes, and the reason it gets a pass is because it's actually a good story with good presentation and good art, and not shot-countershot drab and endless conversations shlock, sarcasm every other sentence (I know they did that in the English translation of Automata, which is garbage), terrible themes, shock value, etc.

Automata was kinda like a breath of fresh air at the time. The story was extremely different from any other story-driven game, nor was it trying to copy Hollywood-style storytelling. On top of that, it's a halfway decent action game, which is generally more than you can say for any other story-driven video game.

Basically, it's both different AND reasonably competent so people really took a liking to it.

Drakengard 3 is better than Automata.

I thought it was a pretty game, but it lacked depth in the combat mechanics and the story was weak.
I didn't do 30 playthroughs, so I probably missed some shit, but my 20-30 hours were enough to get bored of it.
So yeah, I agree, it's overrated. It reminded me of BOTW. It's a shame they made such an interesting world to then have little variety in what you do/find, while travelling through it.
Obviously BOTW rapes NIER, but I felt the same way about their content.
