She has some key advantages. She has access to quick vertical and horizontal boosts with her hammer jump and giant step, and her hammer has a deceptively large hitbox - on top of giving her huge boosts if she hammers a spring.

It's kind of sad how little affect Sonic games have had on platformers in general. Even to this day they're still unique, and many indies still use block platforming with no use of hills or momentum. Sucks a lot.

Are you completely unaware of the mascot wars of the 90's? There were several attempts to replicate Sonic, but they all sucked at it. And I don't mean just making a game starring an animal. The high speed gameplay with various slopes and hills. Speedy Gonzales on the Game Boy, Socket on the Genesis, Wiz'n'Liz, Kid Chaos and both Zool games on the Amiga, Home Improvement on the SNES, and the most infamous of them all, Bubsy the Bobcast. They all just completely suck at it.
Hell, you have so many fan games still trying to replicate the success but not getting it quite right. Everyone praises Freedom Planet, but that shit feels more like a Rocket Knight Adventure game than a Sonic successor.

That's a nice way to put it. I missed out on Rocket Knight, so FP ended up reminding me of Sonic 4 if it was made well.
I did miss a lot of older attempts at stealing Sonic thunder, since I wasn't really exposed to them until I was older. I only know about Zool because I family member had a roomate with an Atari Jaguar of all things.

Certain combos in Advance 3 were good as well. Amy+Tails is pretty much how she was in Advance 1, and Amy+Knuckles is a hilariously uncontrollable mess with Amy's speed and lack of curling and Knuckles's inertia.
