Half-Life and Deus Ex are both amazing. So are Doom, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, and System Shock.

It was the single most groundbreaking FPS of all time. Its also incredibly fun and the story is engaging without being pompous or distracting (stroy should be 2nd to gameplay, gameplay is perfect for hl).
Theres a reason is considered a 100/100 and influenced every FPS since.

I don't hate it, it's just not as good as fanboys claim as is the case with everything that has a fanboy cult. People act like it's the only game that has ever had linear gameplay and told a story. HL1 is really just mediocre and HL2 wasn't much better (in fact, it was worse wrt gameplay).
