HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO TEACH YOU THIS LESSON OLD MAN
I unironically think this game has a chance without garfield, espicially if they go with the dota2 F2P model.
They also probably should have announced the original beside half life alyx and I think it would have done better.
Gotta have the picture.
I'll never understand why it wasn't f2p in the first place
I never paid much attention to these card games, but hasn't the hype for them pretty much died down? When they first released Artifact, it seemed like trying to cash in on Hearthstone's popularity, but trying again now just seems like striking while the iron is freezing cold.
>Valve was surprised by Artifact's failure
Really, motherfucker? Fucking REALLY?
rumors (from the incel fuck of VNN) is that they completely reworked the gameplay.
i am sad, because i actually love artifact's gameplay and it's very fun.But realistically i know the game failed for many reasons and a good 40% of them fall onto the gameplay. it just can't be fixed.3 screens was a mistake.low RNG was a mistake.boardgamey sources of RNG was a mistake, too high complexity while also being too difficult, too hard to acknowledge your mistakes, design forcing heroes to be too simple and flavorless.
What the everloving fuck was Garfield thinking and how could Valve not see that it was both the wrong way to make a "dota2 card game" and a "top esport card game"? Given that i want both or either or those, i ultimately approve deep gameplay changes. it's basically rumored to be a fresh new game, just ripping off the content and goals, perhaps part of the client of the first.
Because Valve arrogantly though that it will sell "because we are valve" and "this will be bigger than hearthstone because we are valve"
Because of garfield. Read his manifesto about card games, it is exactly what artifacts model was.
I don't think garfield forced them to do it or anything, but I don't think they cared enough to stop him either. Especially since they backtracked on it with card balancing only after he left.
>rumors (from the incel fuck of VNN) is that they completely reworked the gameplay.
He got his "rumors" straight from devs working on Artifact 2. He threw up the qualifier of "rumor" because those devs also warned him that other devs at Valve that hate him will sometimes straight up change things he reports on in order to screw with him.
>we're going to get Artifact 3 before Half-Life 3
If alyx does well half life 3 will be a thing. Alyx is designed to test the waters before they commit to a bigger game.
How are they possibly surprised when a whole crowd of dota fans went "aww" during it's unveiling?
Like what the fuck did they honestly expect?
>I'll never understand why it wasn't f2p in the first place
are you blind user?
Valve doesn't want to make videogames. They don't want to make money from their games, because steam prints more money without any work.Valve wants to grow steam and impact the videogame industry at large and videogames they make are just a tool for that.If that wasn't the case then you would have seen more Valve games.
Dota2/CSGO/TF2 are f2p efforts meant to make million of poorfags install steam, and they are also the biggest esports, that sound like very useful for a storefront to own them.
HL:Alyx + Valve Index is a 10 year investment to make sure 95% of VR gaming will belong to steam.Strike early and big, , build the road, keep the lead. simple plan.
Artifact was meant to be yet another piece of the big puzzle that is steam.Steam has the market feature that no other platform has, therefore Valve attempted to expand this advantage, while also hitting esports and bringing adult mtg players to steam ( hint: they could have suceeded big time, WotC was fucking up the competitive scene enormously that year).
Dota Underlord is an emergency project by the artifact team to avoid getting fires/suicide themselves for how badly they fucked up with artifact, while also satisfying what they think is the same audience they deluded
If it wasn't for the market features then Artifact would have never been made.it's the main reason valve was interested at all.I think it's super obvious if you look at it from afar.
Reminder
youtube.com
Artifact was hyped, many people checked it out because many people wanted a better original card game or a dota2 card game.digital CCGs/TCGs are cheap so the treshold for success wouldn't have been millions. it failed because of the product and the marketing, not because people didn't want the concept.
According to Jeri Ellsworth on her time at Valve, basically every project at Valve has to be justified by billion dollar impact. When she pitched her AR projects as having potential to make 200 million in revenue in its first year, the higher ups replied that that was "0 billions."
it is honestly baffling why they think this game needs to exist.
It was a game chasing a trend that has already widely died out, using a property that nobody gives a shit about the flavor of, using a model that nobody likes.
Even if they manage to eliminate literally all of those flaws, it is still, at best, a card game when the people who like card games are already invested in one of the existing ones.
It is a game for literally nobody that they tried to force by sponsoring streamers and promising a giant prize pool for tournaments (which never happened because it died)
It seems really weird since there is now a LoL cardgame out using up Artifact's entire reason for existing.
Also it hasn't been shitting the bed, which is astounding.
even if it was garfield that pitched the economy model, Valve only listened and allowed him to proceed because they actually wanted that economy model. He might be the origin of the idea, but not the biggest reason it happened.
I hope they remove RNG from attacking because that shit was THE MOST infuriating thing I have ever seen in an online card game.
And I played sword girls
id rather play legends of runeterra instead of yet another p2w card game
I wish somebody would do a full coverage of artifact like internet historian.
Yes people were disappointed at first, but then at the next TI gabe went on stage and gave everyone free codes and the crowd went wild.
I don't blame you for not knowing that part though, as people just memed up one side and ignored what didn't fit their narrative.

>First off, we wanted to say thanks for all of your tweets, emails and posts. The continued interest in Artifact has been encouraging, and we sincerely appreciate all of the feedback!
>You might notice some changes soon – we are starting tests on our systems and infrastructure. This shouldn’t impact live Artifact but we wanted to give you a heads up.
>Expect more news after the launch of Half-Life: Alyx!
CARDKINO’S BACK ON THE MENU ARTICHADS
What is something nobody asked for?
Out of touch developers for 400 Alex
they are gonna make it f2p with extremely low or zero p2w aspect, user. that's the most obvious and safe rumor we have about it.Just like Dota Underlord.
hoes mad
I stayed with it longer than most, but yes the arrows were the stupidest most infuriating thing.
I understand why directions were random on summon, else things like kannas ult would become a fucking disaster to manually control.
BUT, there was no fucking reason for the arrows to reroll every turn on existing minions.
Making the correct unit placement then getting punished for 3 turns in a row by RNG is the stupidest thing I have ever seen in a card game. Even stupider than that creature in hearthstone that made random spells hit random targets.
I'm tired of devs trying to inject more randomness into a genre that is already inherently random thanks to deck drawing and deck ordering.
All cards games are p2w. There's no way around it. The best thing artifact can do is at least be free to download like every other competitor is
Trips of truth right there.
The game doesn't even make any sense. Why are there 3 boards? Why are there random spyro knockoffs everywhere? What do the dozens of numbers on screen mean? Why should I invest any time or energy into it?
and now they know it was retarded
>the crowd went wild.
Literally never happened.
>with extremely low or zero p2w aspect
there's no way they won't use steam market to make it p2w
Remember, this is the same company that put in random crits in TF2 that aren't random at all but scale the chance with damage then lied about how it is used to give new players a chance in commentary
Redpill me on Garfield.
so how are crits pay to win?
Why is Valve working on this unforgivable shit when they should be working on the Heavy update for TF2 instead?
He hates Mondays, and loves lasagna.
A mediocre game designer who got lucky once on a game that only actually became great when it started being designed by other people and proceeded to use the fame he won from that to push through a bunch of other terrible games.
Made MtG.
>Also it hasn't been shitting the bed, which is astounding.
Runeterra is unironically horrible and half dead just because of Riot's mismanagement and shit core mechanics
so literally this?
>make a card game based off a video game
>instead of a vard game based off the world of said game
literally what were they thinking
I gave you the benefit of the doubt of being uneducated, but it turns out you're just a retard.
more or less
>All cards games are p2w
that's retarded user. you can just make a card game where you can't pay to get more card. and there is a good chance Valve will go with that route.
Legend of runeterra almost was that.Allegedly they added the ability to buy individual cards, limited weekly, only because people who don't want to play 30 minutes each day wanted to unlock deck faster by paying.
Chroma:bloom and blight is also an upcoming card game that only monetize cosmetics ( if they keep their promise and get funded, which i doubt)
Because TF2 is a 13-year-old game running on a 10-year-old version of a 16-year-old engine and has already been updated more than 600 times over the last goddamn decade. It is already stuffed to the point of breaking with more content than it was ever meant to have, and more than even the faggots who refuse to shut the fuck up about TF2 and bring it up completely unprompted can bring themselves to care about. There are over 100 official maps and about five of them get played with any regularity.
Bar a Source 2 port (which would require so much effort they might as well just make TF3) there is literally nothing an update could meaningfully add to this point. If you got your precious update you’d play with the new content for a week, lose interest, toss it on the pile of TF2’s bloated file space nobody gives a shit about it, and demand another update to repeat the cycle anew.
TF2’s had its turn and then some. Move the fuck on and, I beg you, play a different game.
Unironically yes.
In interviews he claimed that artifact failed because "people didn't understand it" and that it was "review bombed".
Except I have yet to see a single person besides siractionslacks claim it was a good game. Literally no card game E-celebs have anything positive to say about it anymore and if you asked about it in their twitch channel you'll get laughed at for even bringing up the game.
Oh boy, I can't wait for Artifact:the Streamening2 again
I miss Netrunner
Whatever it is, I hope it fails. I don't care if it's a good game, I just want it to fail to teach Valve a lesson about working on this over beloved games like TF2.
...
0.2 Billion is still more than 0, cheeky bastards.
ARTIFACT CHADS IN THE HOOOOUSE TONIGHT
I think it's more like riding off your past success instead of realizing that no other day is more important than today
>All cards games are p2w.
LCGs would like to have a word with you (and is what artifact should have been from the start)
I like that artifact has evolved from doomposting to chadposting.
a very competent boomer boardgame designer who struck gold in 1992 with mtg with a design that is very flawed and horrendous and succeed because it filled a hole in the market no one ever dared to touch.
Success got in his head and, while he is competent in making amazing game mechanics, he has fucked up views about some aspects of game design, such as economy model and RNG, that he refuse to update to the current or last decade.
he makes money as a freelancer, scamming game companies to put his name on a board game or card game with the promise that "it will be the next mtg"( it won't. plenty of failures happned after it) or "everyone knows my name therefore it will sell".
Given that his business model relies on him being seen as the Messiah of card games by everyone, he refused to ackowledge that artifact bombed hard because of his ideas and vision.
Actually many of his board games are solid.
They make the same excuse as to why they will never do HL3. "There is too much hype and people will nit pick it to death so it will fail." Fuck Valve.
I guess I should have specified competitive card games. LCG's were never going to be the business model for artifact, and still won't if they try to revive it. Pokemon Online, Duel Links, and both online clients for Magic get by with the regular business model
He's a math genius, not a game designer.
