Luigis mansion 3 just looks like a cartoon halloween ride when it tries to be "scary". While the first game goes for a more realistic and depressing look.

Breath of the Wild rivals Majora's Mask in terms of being sad as fuck, it's just big enough to include other emotions and ultimately accepts loss instead of wallowing in it.

Majora's Mask is the exception rather than the rule, most Zelda games like A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time are pretty cute and lighthearted, so all the talk about the series losing its edge doesn't make any sense.

I dunno man, when I first stepped out of the Temple of Time as adult Link, and the sky was blood red and I was surrounded by screaming zombies. It's pretty dark.
