WARING: WALL OF TEXT

WARING: WALL OF TEXT

Jesus christ doom eternal is probably my biggest gaming disappointment in many years.. I was one of the people who actually liked doom 2016, and eternal is just not the same game in almost any way.

One big difference is the general tone of the game. Doom is and never was a super serious game, but it at least seemed like it respected itself somewhat. Doom eternal turned up the "video-gamey” aspect that 2016 was praised for a fuck ton. BUT NOT THE GOOD PARTS. The biggest offender here it the fact that while ramping up the arcadey and corny side of things, they for some reason try to shove in some grand story into the game with ton of cutscenes, And it actually tries to take itself seriously, constantly interrupting the flow of the gameplay.

This story trying to take itself seriously really REALLY does not work when the rest of the game is so god damn arcadey. Floating glowing question marks and weapons instead of detailed 3d models like doom 2016 (yes it works if the game is not trying to take itself so seriously with the story!), 1-UPS, insanely lame platforming segments, monkey bar swinging, as well as some of the most forced climbing sections ive ever seen in a video game (why is it there? it's not fun, it really adds nothing to the game but make it less focused).

It has an insane abundance of corny references and "meme" dialogue that just doesn't work with this game, (this isn't duke nukem or borderlands, why does it need to become like those games to be successful?). Doomguy even has a fucking Gamer PC setup for fucks sake!

The second biggest problem with the game is the absolute truckload of tutorials. Every little pick up, mechanic, weapon, attachment, enemy and even enemy weakness has a goddamn tutorial (and not in a tasteful appealing way either, some of them even teleport you to an asset-less training room forcing you to test the mechanic). Many will argue “just turn them off!” but tutorials can be an essential tool for the enjoyment of a game on the first playthrough, the problem here is the overabundance of them, aswell as the dogshit implementation. Tutorials should be implemented into the game seamlessly, it should be hard to spot if what i'm doing is actually a tutorial. (in my opinion anyway, but i'm sure most would agree with this)

One of doom 2016s strengths for a modern AAA shooter was it's incredibly minimal storytelling and straight to the point action (with minimal tutorials!). You just killed demons. With a good soundtrack and some decent hellish setpieces. Doom eternal just doesn't flow in the same way. It tries to throw in so much useless shit just to make a “bigger” game than its predecessor, when the fact that doom 2016 was such a focused experience is what made it fun.

The only positive thing I can say about this game is some that its satisfying seeing pieces of demons flying of them when shooting them, as well as some (very brief) moments of adrenaline action similar to the 2016 game. Sadly this is constantly interrupted by the constant lack of ammo. The starting shotgun has 16 (16!) bullets capacity! And you also DO NOT deal damage with normal melee any more so you have to waste your ammo on basic fodder enemies.. (the pistol is completely gone as well). I get what the devs were trying to do here, to force you to use every weapon. but it ends up just being a lot less fun compared to its predecessor unless you play EXACTLY as the devs intended.

I never write stuff like as you can probably tell and it ended up being a wall of text, but I was just so god damn disappointed with this game..

wow a lot of people really have played a lot of a game that just came out hours ago.

is this some kind of anti shill campaign? who is funding this crap? First this game gets a MASSIVE shill campaign, and now it looks like it has a raid on Yas Forums against it. regardless, stfu op. igaf about your opinions on a game you've played for 3 hours at most.

I beat the game in 13 hours.. Its not a long game

>op makes a genuine effort to discuss a newly released game
>gets ignored
>meanwhile offtopic, coomer and threads being spammed daily get bumped and mods dont delete them
never change, Yas Forums

There's been one guy desperately trying to tortanic it for months. It's release day, this is his big day, he'll be online all day making new tl;dr posts with the same writing style. Within the week he'll probably move on to something else, maybe Cyberpunk.

I agree with most of the OPs points but I"m still having a lot of fun. Hopefully they'll tone down the campiness in the next one. Doom 2016 was great, the doom guy seemed a lot more bad ass when the world wasn't so cartoonish and seemed more realistic.

should i buy it or pirate it OP?
