Doom is a minor game in Japan, so Doom community in Japan is very small. The community having been weakening year by year, we started this project for strengthening our solidarity, improving mapping skill, and so on. We aimed a low-threshold project which anyone could participate. Some doomers were inexperience mappers or beginners, so Tatsurd-Cacocaco, a project leader, supported map's detail and port compatibility. We finally managed to complete 32 maps which are the same quality as modern maps.

Not exactly super popular, but in Japan the relative popularity of Macintosh computers and the slow decline of home-based ones (FM-TOWNS, X68000, PC-98 and so on) during that time resulted in a fanbase of a respectable size, and that is despite the general unpopularity of the FPS genre there. There's a few western games that are very popular in Japan. Skyrim, the Witcher 3, Bioshock, Uncharted, Overwatch, Valve games, Borderlands, Fallout, Undertale, the Last of Us, God of War, and Grand Theft Auto are recent ones that gamers in Japan regard highly.

Ratchet and Clank, Destroy All Humans, Spyro, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Crash Bandicoot, and the Lego games are some sort of surprising cult classics.

Life is Strange is also surprisingly popular considering how western it is.

American indie games are very popular among the hardcore, naturally.

Gears of War is a meme for being American as FUCK.

Apparently Paradox games have a big fanbase but have horrible translations.

Also a fun fact, there's a LOT of nerds there who refuse to watch American movies dubbed. Star Wars, Steven Spielberg movies, Ghostbusters, and the Matrix are considered peak Amerika-core, though ironically their subtitles take a lot of liberty.

That's the old one which is a bit literal, the newer one from the early 00's just straight up makes up a lot of jokes to be funnier. Same with Back to the Future's newer translations. I bet you anything there's a fan translation that's extremely literal, though I'm not aware of them.

I can imagine some of Bill Murray's jokes may get misplaced in localisation
