Its because its already happened. I think the idea from OP is the planet was saved, but obviously literally everyone fucking died and we jump forward where Red XIII's race is running free. So we are in a time loop of some sort, and in the remake we will stop meteor for real this time.
Sephiroth/Jenova are just free from this loop perhaps

Normal. I didn't exactly like it, but it's serviceable. Roche Sephiroth Behemoth Hellhouse is now a bossfight I don't think there are new areas, but there is new stuff in them. You can go between upper Midgar and slums at almost anytime. No train, no bike. Pretty sure that "Remake" is a subtitle. In the same way as "Crisis Core" or "Advent Children" is. He just blocks all attacks and then does a limit break slashing you with his sword. Don't know what it's called, sorry. Very quiet piano version of One Winged Angel plays.

I've actually kind of wondered about that, if they were going to go all Rebuild of Evangelion/Dark Tower with it, and then have things majorly go off the rails down the road, with the Dementors showing glimpses of the future, and implying that it's Aerith's destiny to die in order to stop Meteor, and then it becomes a whole thing about Cloud saying "fuck destiny, we'll find a better way", stops Aerith's death, and the story becomes completely unpredictable from there.
