The hardware was clearly designed for backward compatibility from the start. The 3D audio chip doubles as the PS3's SPUs, by far the hardest part to emulate.
It's obviously some legal BS or under-baked code keeping them from announcing it fully.

If you watch the video, there is no PS3/PS2/PS1 compatibility at all. The box is that shape because it was being used to show the PS3 backwards compatibility with PS2 and how this differs. It will however have 100% full backwards compatibility with PS4 which a lot of people picking up on. It's the "boost" mode he was referring to when he mentioned the top 100 games.

Sony doesn't do BC as a rule. They don't really have a choice now with PS4 to PS5 because there are shitloads of online games that are going to go cross-gen, but it's not going any further than that.

They sold the PS3 for $599 US dollars and realized they had to cut costs. Nowadays they can do PS1 compatibility, anything can at this point, they're just cheap.

I said this before when Cerny showed Spiderman loading, and I'll say it again after this GDC presentation: Sony is not going to come out and say it's BC and move on. They are saving the reveal to be at a big show along with whatever games they have coming. They want to hype people up and have a big applause moment. PS3, PS2 and PS1 games would have to be emulated and checked individually if they need any work to run properly.
This image just shows that the console will run out of the box almost every single game that was launched for PS4, which includes all the PS3 remasters.
Xbox One backwards compatibilities aren't actually that, there is a mix of port and emulation happening, you can clearly see that some halo games runs bad on Xbox One because the Xbox 360 CPU was a monster and Xbox One has a bare minimum CPU.

They used to have miniature consoles built into the consoles. Their software solutions have always been garbage. Microsoft's software solutions in comparison have always been pretty good. Even on the 360.

with todays technology they should be able to put a ps1 at least inside of the PS5. the only reason they wouldnt is probably because nobody cares about ps1 backwards compatibility though. they did it with the ps3.

Making emulators ain't fucking cheap and the PS4 was never intended to be able to read PS2 discs so they had to repackage games.

It sold that much because it had no competition, not on its own merits. Microsoft was more concerned about selling Kinect and TV to people who already had Wiis and TV boxes, and Nintendo relied on gimmicks instead of hardware, but the best gimmick they had was an oversized controller with a screen on it.

Not necessarily. You'd still have to be able to read important copyright information and rights management data off of the disc, I'd assume. Sure, a PC can rip the games, but playing them without stepping on someone's toes might be an issue.
There's also the infamous blue PS2 games that came on CD. Those would be virtually impossible to play because the PS4 cannot read CDs. That would majorly cripple its ability to emulate the PS2 and PS1 considerably.

It's absolutely insane that they wouldn't push so hard for PS1/PS2/PS3 backwards compatibility. PS1 and PS2 at this point should be brainlessly easy and that'd be a HUGE boon to everybody from retailers to Sony's own digital shop. PS3 is harder but there are so many games on the PS3 that are locked to it that people would like to play and backwards compatibility would have been a major selling point.

Why would anyone assume they'll have built in support when they've been working on improving ps now so much the last couple years? It's still trash for most games, but them letting you download all the ps2 and ps4 games on the service directly to your ps4 is a pretty big step up. You have to be a literal fucking mong to think they'll have BC instead of using this service they've been tweaking for half a decade.

This gen will be a lot closer than the last gen was. We're most likely looking at PS3 vs. 360 numbers by the end of it, and that's optimistic for Sony.
