My vote was for Bomberman, but as someone who both hates Minecraft and the whole movement of Steve for Smash, I do think your sarcastic aside is probably correct. If we're going with characters to represent the most iconic video game franchises for this image, then yes, Steve would be a better fit than Banjo.

Having said that, I'm very happy to have Banjo in Smash, and pray we never see the day of Steve in Smash.

Banjo and Spyro aren't really that recognizable compared to everyone else there. Banjo's legacy was very shortlived thanks to Microsoft doing jack shit with him and Spyro is in the tier below along with Ratchet, Clank, Jax, Daxter, etc. Crash is an exception since he was basically Sony's mascot for a while.
