Best level design...

>best level design, every level is unique and memorable with little in the way of the backtracking through levels and humping walls present in its predecessors
>exceptionally difficult to find secrets now feel exceptionally rewarding as they should, giving the player demon keys which permanently upgrade one of their most powerful weapons
>engine taken to its limits with high quality sprites, advanced lighting effects and more detailed level geometry than ever which even play into the level design
>atmosphere further complemented with an excellent and wholly original soundtrack
>fast-paced gameplay is still present, the game makes no concessions bringing you a fully-fledged Doom experience
Forget about Eternal; go play Doom 64 right now

>64
>Fast-paced

Yes. Maybe you need to rebind your controls if you're having trouble.

based

>high quality sprites
the sprites are dogshit, as are the needless enemy redesigns, as are the unanimated viewmodels, and the whole game is brown. it's a fine doom game, stop sucking its dick because it's the current underage retro-enthusiast meme on 4channel.

>Doom 64
>little in the way of the backtracking
I love the game, but the map layouts were it biggest flaw
>here let me press 3 buttons to lift 3 platforms to let me press a button to lower a wall to open a door to press a button to life a platform

>retarded desperate shitposting has reached critical mass

Doom64 has a great soundtrack.

>Forget about Eternal; go play Doom 64 right now
Or I jsut pick up my copy of Doom Eternal and get Doom 64 as well.

New enemies are spawned whenever you need to backtrack so you don't walk around in an empty level

>it's the current underage retro-enthusiast meme on 4channel
I never see anyone talk about Doom 64 here
Also shit taste as well as being wrong

I think he meant that it'S LE EPIC SHITPOSTING PRIME HOURS XD XD because we're so close to Doom Eternal so COME ON IN EVERYONE XD PUT YOUR FIFTY MASKS OF EPIC IRONY AND SHITPOST THAT GAME TO OBLIVION!
Which includes the classic retrofagging and nostalgia goggles by pushing the idea that OLD WAS BETTER OLD BEST OLD BETTER THAN NEW
Which he is absolutely accurate about. Shut the fuck up you divisive little baby. It's ok to enjoy all the things and not restrain yourself to some fucking one inch by one inch box of elitism.

Doom 64's Hell executes its direction well with a great atmosphere and level design, but it does suffer from its own limited direction, after the previous games having a more versatile (Even if it looks random) Hell that looked more unique and couldn't be created by anyone else but id themselves.
The fact that the fusion of flesh and metal fits with cybernetic demons makes me wish 64's Hell would take more elements from old school Inferno.
Maybe 64's Hell succeeds on looking more like Hell, but while the classic 1/2 Hell felt more unique (Even if its levels weren't as good), it's the one that had to come from id themselves.
If classic Doom had the aesthetic of 64, i couldn't see people making more maps or mods, when Doom's setting being a weird mix of ideas is something that makes it fun to make content for.
Like, the existence of a lion stone face literally inspired that Realm667 lion Baron enemy.
64 was even meant to tackle on different versions of Hell during development too, so i can see it could have done more than gothic castles and gargoyle statues.
At least the colored lighting makes levels more diverse and the game is aware of its visual limitations, compared to 2016's Hell.

So you agree
>little in the way of the backtracking
is a less than accurate statement?

shut up boomer

>console shooter
>good

My only complaint is the dark room areas even with brightness up. On higher difficulties it just feels super annoying especially that pinky pit at the end of level 6 so far.

Otherwise im enjoying it alot besides Plutonia and the good Doom 1 levels its probably the best retail Doom from what i've play. Speed is slightly slow but its still fine with run. Playing it on console though and i didn't see a way to quick weapon switch which is alittle annoying.

Can't wait to play the new content.

i want to know if the port is good or shit

It's just an updated Doom 64 EX, which was already good itself.

i cant it says "game requires validation" and thats it.

looks ugly. you can tell they were struggling with the limited storage capacity of cartridges

Looks fucking great, what are you on about?

Attached: DOOM64 2020-02-19 08-39-39-38.png (1600x900, 1008.32K)

I am playing it on Switch.
How do I fix the controls?

>looks good!
with nostalgia goggles the size of 7 megabyte

I do.
I think it still works. Like there's this pitch black hallway with imps shooting fireballs at you, but that's all you need to see. Feels cool firing your chaingun into the dark like that.

>>looks good!
Yes.

The first time I played Doom 64 I just stood in that room in one of the first levels with the pinkies and the spinning light pillar for a few minutes.
And shit still looks fantastic on a CRT. Certainly takes advantage of the black levels well.

Psycho.

Agreed

>the sprites are dogshit
Wrong.
>as are the needless enemy redesigns
They aren't needless, they were remade to fit the darker atmosphere of the game as the original sprites don't fit the new audio. See the PS1 port of Doom, it's a perfect example of this since it has the moodier audio featured in 64 but uses the art assets of the originals; they don't mix.
>unanimated viewmodels
Unfortunate choice made because of storage limitations.
>and the whole game is brown
Objectively false, 64 has tons of color.

>oh man I wonder what the boss at the end of this area is going to be
>oh my god, it’s another wall with a goat head on it! It’s not the icon of sin though! I’m going insaaaaaaaaaane!

Post your top 3 Doom 64 levels.

>Altar of Pain
>Watch Your Step
>Breakdown

play BrutalDoom64. Fixes all the pacing issues.

is it true the new port comes with a new level pack?

you can really tell how bad this board is when retarded underage are allowed to post idiotic things like this without repercussions

Yes.

Is it just me or barons and knights incredibly common in 64? Like more common than imps at times

Attached: Barron64_sprite.png (360x360, 66.78K)

Then enlighten me. why should I NOT play Doom Eternal when I can play BOTH Doom Eternal AND Doom 64? Why the division?

I don't like the "upgraded" models.

They're overused, yes, but I never found them to be much of a problem even when pistol starting.

in the next few months used copies of doom eternal will pricedrop rapidly

Doom 2016 is still at full price in my area and used copies are about 20 dollars cheaper which is fucking nothing.
I don't get your obsessive desire to prevent people from playing the newest game unless it's either le epic irony XD or you're actually an unironic nostalgiafag who can't accept he has no control on other people's behavior.

Its a shame they were tight in memory and had to cut some demons. It will be cool if the new episode adds some demons. A redux of the levels with new demons will be neat too, killing too many baron becomes tiresome for how tanky they are

Console owner? Doom 2016 goes on sale for 5 bucks on pc in the states

Who the fuck cares, schizo.

Exactly, nobody cares about your opinions, have a good day.
Yeah, guilty as charged. I don't understand why they insist on selling it at almost full price even used on the consoles, but on PC it's dirt cheap.
I've been wanting to build a PC for 2 years now, but life events keep emptying my saving account. I'm tired of the console life.

Two thoughts about Doom 64.

-Puzzles they can be very cryptic. While on classic Doom they're quite predictable, "find the hidden switch to lower the wall", on D64 all bets are off, with its rooms that radically alter their shape out of nowhere and having to play cat-and-mouse with keys that run away from your grasp. These puzzles also cannot be cheesed with noclip, you have to look up the solution if you're stuck.

-The Unmaker gun makes the BFG redundant and useless when fully upgraded. It shouldn't have used cells as ammo.

Biggest flaw with 64 is the complete lack of pulse pounding music as expected of Doom, instead going for spoopy ambience so low you can barely hear it. It actually is creepy but I really would have liked some more lively tracks. This game starts out feelimg like Doom meets Alien or something with the gloomy corridors and that music.

Attached: Doom64endingscreen.jpg (2434x1816, 602.78K)

I personally have no issue with the lack of music but I did find it funny they used said music in the trailer.

youtube.com/watch?v=mtvHGrPyJw8

Yeah that is complete false advertising, I really wonder why they opted out the customary Doom tracks back then. Well generally I feel this was the first step towards Doom becoming horror oriented, which culminated with 3 obviously, but as much blame as 3 gets 64 did it's part. The thing was 64 was much better than 3.

Is doom 64 even out yet? I mean the new version with improved controls and extra content. Doesn't it release on the 20th?

You cared enough to reply, Psycho.

Comes out tomorrow with Eternal.

it's already out on the Bethesda launcher

Are they sending out pre-order codes soon? I haven't got mine

wat

Man, killing cardboard cut outs never felt so good.
