Ask Nook. Doing what he says unlocks more shit, go until you can get a house then you're "done" for the day. Doing shit the NPCs want unlocks more shit to do. You get more islanders by using tickets bought with mileage (first one is free)to do what I said above. I assume the islander I met will move in tomorrow.
The ATM thing in the bottom right in Cook's place, it'll eventually have more options one is spending mileage.

Yeah, I heard that you pick the softer consonant, if it's easier to say. In that case, じま might be the better choice. I also heard that foreign names usually use とう but haven't seen any confirmation on that.
