was this just a gigantic marketing blunder? it seems like the only reason this is "divisive" is because all the mouthbreathing TPP zoomers and "i know pyramid head" 2016 silent hill stans started following the release and it didnt end up being TPP meets PT
The whole "walking simulator" "criticism" feels extremely overblown and misguided. I mean its literally a delivery game but if this game had came out in the PS2 era people would treat it exactly like they treat ICO/ SOTC or any other weird game that didnt fall into the exact console platformer, action or survival horror mold of the time. Im not going to act like death stranding is perfect or even close but id certainly much rather keep playing it forever than go through the blender of the normal yearly AAA trash including most of the other snoy games like söy of war or horizon zero dawn which are just inferior versions of other games
This is literally the worst open world game of the generation. The Delivery Simulator game
Nolan Myers
I found the walking in this game more engaging than the cowboy one so theres that.
Nicholas Bailey
>walking, delivery, walking
This is basically the game. A bad game
Jayden Howard
I think their biggest mistake was announcing it would also be on PC I'm sure I'm not the only one holding out for the superior version of the game
Ryan Sanders
I'm regrets to have waste my money into this crap game
Logan Flores
"Walking simulator" is a Yas Forumseddit buzzword, remember no one here plays games You could call fallout a walking simulator and everyone here dickrides that game like it cums cocaine
Tyler Ross
How would you market this game without making it out to be something it is not? >cant show you just walking around because people wouldn't like it and find it boring >cant show the WW1 segments because people would feel betrayed if it isn't the whole game
People who didn't play this game can't accurately judge it as there is so much more to it than meets the eye That said I did think the ending was far too long and they could've cut down on the unneccessary exposition that happens literal moments after you get the info first hand
And I'd like to see Del Toro in more games, he was the best part about Death Stranding
William Perry
I'm sure Youtuber culture certainly hit this game hard. And I think crap like that will have a negative effect in people wanting to do stuff more out there, like back in the more experimental PS1 games.
That being said, it's a game I wouldn't want to play, but more see what it's trying to do.
Christopher Foster
>horrible gameplay >terrible plot >empty open world
Some of the flaws of this bad game
Evan Cooper
Princess beach
Evan Peterson
By saying it's a game where you make numerous deliveries, on foot or by vehicle, across a post-apocalyptic America reminiscent of Greenland in the hopes of rebuilding a semblance of structure and society. There are threats to be wary of and deal with, but combat isn't the focus and takes a backseat to making long treks across the landscape.
It's not that difficult and any claim to the contrary is quibbling.
Elijah Jones
people complain that all you do in games in killing stuff. People also complain if you don't constantly kill stuff.
Christian Cox
>but if this game had came out in the PS2 era people would treat it exactly like they treat ICO/ SOTC or any other weird game that didnt fall into the exact console platformer, action or survival horror mold of the time.
This sentence hurts me in how accurate it is. Back in the old days if unconventional games came out, the more niche hardcore gamers would be interested in them and discussion would form around those game and what made them different, especial mentions going to the more narratively driven games, many of which unfortunately never left Japan. But today people worship retro games and games trying to emulate retro games as closely as possible and anything more experimental that doesn't have an "arcade" factor to the gameplay is automatically labeled a "walking simulator/pretentious bullshit" and the only crowd willing to give them a chance are the journalists and their ilk meaning only experimental games that agree with whatever bullshit narrative they want to push today gets any level of spotlight. Fuck this timeline.
Well, the game is basically a shitty deliveryman simulator game. So, it is obvious a fucking boring game.
Josiah Turner
It’s tries to be something I guess
Carter Wilson
Go from point A to point B. This is basically the game. A boring experience
Jordan Roberts
I think the reason it's so divisive is because its fans are uppity drones. The game is sitting at an 82 and 7.3 on metacritic, so it's generally viewed as a "good" to "ok" game. Sit down and be humble.
Nathaniel Cook
What was up with all the weird video game analogies and expressions in the game? Were they all just nods at the player?
I'm not sure your description would leave the normals with anything other than "walking simulator" in their minds, though I wouldn't know how else to describe it either Seems like a lose-lose situation for kojima either way and it's no wonder the game ""flopped""
Levi Johnson
The stupidly terrible writing didn't help matters. As for the gameplay sure, it's doing its own thing, I can respect that much. Don't be dense. Death Stranding isn't some masterpiece that people shit on just because it doesn't play like MGS or CoD. Niche games find their audience all the time. Something like Shadow of the Colossus is pretty much a masterpiece, a timeless game that will always stand as a testament to the power of gaming, while there's a lot of faults one can point towards Death Stranding. It's got cool visuals, a unique focus on its gameplay but it's far from a tight package.
Jackson Johnson
Filtered
Cooper Thomas
yea, you were better off using that money for some English class instead.
Jace Rodriguez
It's kojima pretending he's making art with a message, but it's not set there is no message. Its just him being dumb
Evan Jenkins
This happened when you made a boring bad game. Where the plot is shit and the gameplay sucks
Noah Russell
The entire game fucking sucks. From top to bottom, don't over analyze it. Hideo Kojima wasted the budget.
Landon Green
It sold well and got nominated for tons of awards. I think Kojima and Sony are pretty happy with it, and not particularly bothered about some review scores from IGN and irrelevant YouTubers. It's one of the biggest new IPs in recent years, the other being Horizon itself. It's almost Sony flexing that they can release a walking simulator to bad reviews and still succeed.
David Miller
people complain when the game is mostly walking
Evan Hernandez
But shadow of the colossus has terrible controls, people just have nostalgia over a game that was different at the time. Attitudes have changed and especially attitudes towards originality
Matthew Ramirez
No you couldn’t, walking simulator means you are walking between cinematics to get the next part of the story
Ayden Reyes
>Seems like a lose-lose situation for kojima either way I mean, the guy didn't even really try with the marketing beyond making it seem all mysterious, and it still sold well-enough. Death Stranding isn't a massive flop, it's just not this amazing new ip that absolutely everybody loves.
Liam Brooks
This game is just a huge disappointment. For many reasons. The absolute boring gameplay. The ridiculous nonsense plot. The tedious and useless open world.
Jeremiah Davis
What I like about it is that you actually are playing the game most of the time. Whereas in other console games you just hold down a button. Making simple terrain traversal part of gameplay rather than just pad time between gameplay, makes it so you are playing instead of watching.
Grayson Peterson
I think there are plenty of smaller and larger messages and themes strewn throughout the game >human connection, the greater whole, achieving things together >positive thinking and helping others helps you too >hope, endurance even through loss, willpower
I also find the whole dynamic of ending the human civilization quickly as opposed to having it struggle until its inevitable demise quite interesting
I think it's fine as long as the guy gets to make more video games, they're nothing if not quality and state of the art
David White
Well, because Death Stranding it is a huge downgrade compared to MGSV. (for gameplay, open world and even for the plot!)
Oliver Bennett
Not really. If SOTC released today it'd still be praised. Same way Last Guardian was praised for its originality while the gameplay had its issues. Death Stranding's issues aren't so much in its gameplay, it's doing its own thing, it's most things that surround the gameplay that aren't good. Even if Death Stranding didn't have Kojima's name attached, people would've still given it the same reviews. Experimental but not without its issues. Was it too easily put down by clickbait youtubers or reviewers? Sure. It's not a game that most people will truly enjoy since it doesn't follow an established formula. But to pretend like it's going to be remembered as a masterpiece in the same way SOTC is nowadays is laughable.
James Price
This game is a mess. The definition of wasted opportunity for Kojima. With unlimited budget you can actually made whatever you want. And you waste your budget for calling famous actors just for making a shitty delivery simulator game?!
Sorry, but this is literally the worst Kojima idea ever made. Literally a dick-move.
Isaiah Torres
Fair enough point.
One could also argue that SoTC has already been released today, and that is the Last Guardian, which made no waves whatsoever. And almost certainly the game would be criticized for the long negative spaces and lack of QOL features such as fast travel, or a lack of combat variety. A bold game but no masterpiece compared to the likes of BoTW. I’d argue that it’s absolutely because of the time period that SoTC is so memorable
I’d put Death Stranding on the same level as MGS2. It will only gain relevance as the years go on because of its experimentation.
Hunter Anderson
>stan Fuck off twitterfag
Liam Bennett
>projared said it's the worst game of the year Based
Joshua Wood
It's literally most boring game ever made.
Jose Jenkins
It's literally only "hated" by ADHD shooter-fags, who apparently couldn't stealth past a very simple section early on in the game, no matter that you get given one of the best weapons just moments earlier.
It is definitely a masterpiece with no other.
Not at all. This and BotW are literally saving the whole open-world style of games.
James Foster
It's not a bad game but it's fucking boring and mostly pointless. It's simply not fun.
It is easily the worst open world game of the generation
Andrew Fisher
user: This game is boring Kojima: It's stylistically designed to be that way. But dumb Americans like shooty shooty. user: It's still fucking boring. Contrary user: it's a good game because it's b̶o̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ comfy. Kojimadrone:It's actually a brilliant masterpiece because Kojima told be so. Repeat et infinitum
Caleb Watson
It looked boring as fuck, with the endless cycle of
>get item >deliver item to place >cutscene and repeat forever
You can't even partake in gunfights because of those ghost things that cause explosions when there's a dead body.
Juan Fisher
retarded and didn't played the game
Isaac Morgan
It's easily one of the best games of 2010s. Will easily take its place as the most groundbreaking and beautiful gaming experiences, alongside with Silent Hill 2, MGS2, and Nier Automata.
t: never played the game.
David King
>the gameplay is trash >delivery missions copy and paste >"I'm Fragile.... but not that fragile...."
The moment when I see how much the plot's sucks.
Landon Moore
I always look at footage before I get games and by god there was nothing appealing about this Deliveryman Simulator
Ethan Taylor
Trash delivery simulator game
Grayson King
They marketed it for normalfag, in reality it's really uncomprimising in its vision and doesn't even remotely attempt to reach out to the broader audience. Bold move by sony and kojima, which I can respect because all in all I found myself enjoying the gameplay very much in contrast to the story which was very basic kojima mumbo jumbo standard storytelling he's been doing for the last 30 years.
Christian White
This is literally the worst Kojima game I've ever played
Brody Nguyen
You can't market art. You can try, but you're just going to come off as insincere, which some (all) of the commercials did. People had literally been saying >Oh it's a fucking japanese weirdo post-apocalyptic delivery simulator forever. But no one listened.
Here's an example of more fun marketing as this is the cover of DEATH STRANDING STAR Nicolas Winding Refn's movie Valhalla Rising, a clear inspiration for Kojima's game. If you've ever seen that movie you know how laughable this art is. Yeah, trying to market Death Stranding is next to impossible. You might trick some normalfags, but in the end you're just going to piss them off because word-of-mouth is going to be horrible.
>Death Stranding's issues aren't so much in its gameplay Speak for yourself. I liked that game enough to finish it but I never want to make another delivery again. Or do combat. Or build your goddamn roads.
This horrible game. A depressing waste of time and money.
>trash gameplay >trash plot
Wyatt Anderson
>If SOTC released today it'd still be praised Hell no, that game was bad back then and it's bad now. But people were able to forgive a lot of its faults and padding due to when it came out, as well as the years passing and some firmly planted rose-tinted goggles. The Last Guardian came out to almost no fanfare whatsoever and people have already forgotten it.
Jeremiah Wood
I didn't trust Death Stranding's marketing because I've seen Kojima's bait and switches before. I got reverse juked.
Joshua Flores
Because he's just made a boring trash delivery simulator game
Brayden Hall
What's with the ESL faggot that comes in every single DS thread, saying the same shit over and over? What's his problem?
Liam Cooper
>Yeah, trying to market Death Stranding is next to impossible. not really, people were already captivated by the trailers and style that the game was selling. I think it was a gigantic failure to not only be so mysterious but do it through some retarded ESL japanese man who cant accurately communicate more clearly what exactly the game is to set the audience expectations straight from the very beginning rather than dropping the gameplay demonstration at the end. He should have more actively compared the game to ones that already exist rather than trying to sell this strand genre its groundbreaking bullshit and just call it a speculative fiction/ horror setting where you cross dangerous open spaces to make deliveries on foot and with tools to assist you
That valhalla rising poster is another example of nightmarishly terrible marketing because the only thing that will achieve is to make the opposite of the intended audience watch the shit only to hate it as a result
John Phillips
The marketing was fine but since the majority of Yas Forums users lack reading comprehension due to brain damage they swear they got tricked, despite Kojima literally playing the delivery portion of DS at TGS and highlighting the main themes of gameplay. I remember the thread, and somwhow to this day anons are confused. Hate the game because you played/watched it and it isn't for you? Perfectly fine. Hate the game because you think it was a slow burn horror game SH spinoff? You need to stop getting your information from shitposters.
Logan Campbell
The egomaniac Kojima he just waste Sony's money just for made a shitty delivery sim game. That's why.
Jaxon Sanders
I never knew we were allowed to spam threads like this and suffer no consequences. I'm taking a leaf out of his book in other threads now!
