This has been months of Yas Forums telling me it will be a flop. So far my eyes have told me differently going by all the pre-release footage and the very gameplay-focused advertising campaign, Bethesda's retarded-ass TV spot notwithstanding. Reviews complain about it because it's hard to make happen on purpose, especially compared to the original game where maps made frequent use of accidental and purposeful infight triggering. Monsters aren't anywhere near as simple as they were in the original games.

Levels are metroid like now, so much bigger, less arenas more normal enemies placement, more secrets. And they added a lot to combat and enemies attack. So its pretty much upgrade from 2016. But the game is bad because it is.

I wrote a long post but I realised it was unnecessarily detailed so here is a shorter one
Eternal is abandoning certain core principles, principles which D44M mostly adhered to, which is why it was liked by even diehard doom fans
the most important ones of these being playing it serious, even if it is over the top, instead of Eternals "look at how over the top this is, this is so over the top" and the game being about killing demons
the game is also heavily catering to the meme-consoomer demoraphic axis which further screams that true DOOM fans are NOT the audience for this game
DOOM also always had a clear good/evil morality axis, demons being pure evil monsters and doomguy being pure good. Eternal throws that out of the window with muh balance, muh ambigous-evil-neutral angels
