Hollow Knight of course. Nearl the best combat and controls, best value, world and content, best looking (fuck off pixeltards). Also, lewdest characters.

Hollow Knight has the most rabid fanbase of babies introduced to the genre by its indie art style. It's probably the most boring and standard metroidvania out there carried hard by it's tumblr artstyle.

>Axiom Vere
>Rabi-Ribi
>Ghost 1.0
>Valdis Story
>Steamworld Dig 2 (sorta)
>Pharaoh Rebirth+
>Luna Nights
>Environmental Station Alpha
>Unepic

Actually just got around to play Valdis Story recently and damn its way better than I expected

It's truly La-Mulana. Hollow Knight is second.
Honestly, if you have a list like this: And La-Mulana isn't on it, then you might as well just toss the entire list out. Because the user is too stupid to have a worthwhile opinion. He's just a low IQ button masher.

My choice would be Rabi-Ribi. It's the only metroidvania I want to come back to after finishing it.

>I fucking forgot la mulana again
god dammit

probably environmental station alpha or AM2R

Hollow knight is a mediocre metroidvania, but a good action adventure

Iconoclasts

Bloodstained

Die fucking hue scum

same. I don't mind the art style but I imagine it turns a lot of people off. The story/dialogue is straight garbage though.

La-Mulana is not from the 2010's

AM2R or Bloodstained. I hate the "cutesy" art style from games like Hollow Knight and Ori.

The remake is.

The messenger #1, The OST was sick good

Assuming it counts, bloodstained. Hollow knight has a cult following but is really not impressive.

I don't know, I don't play trash.

Hang on, I just remember Dark Souls released in 2011. So that.

LOL
AHAHAHAHAHAH

going on a binge lately my answer would be Rabi-Ribi. It's the most standout one next to Environmental Station Alpha and Axiom Verge. Even though it's the equivalent to being the "black coffee" of the genre. You will suffer doing anything beyond the default difficulty, even 0% (which is played on the lowest difficulty) is the second hardest thing to Bunny Extinction Mode

Like 70% of those you named are not metroidvanias though.

The Mummy Demastered

>70%
I'll give you Ghost 1.0 and Steamworld but really nigga
Enlighten me

Here's the stealth based sneaking in the thread

Is that...

>best metroidvania is the boss-fight game with extremely weak level design and metroidvania elements

waifufags need some fucking self awareness.

No wait...
okay
Nintendo buys the castlemania franchise and develops a game called "Metroidvania" where Samus Belmont raids Ridleycula's space castle with her upgradeable gunwhip

I played the game on Hard and felt that the difficulty was perfect.

Valdis Story was a true unexpected god send

There's a reason HK fags are so persistent. The game is just good.

NINTENDO!!

La-Mulana remake followed by Hollow Knight.

It actually took me until after the Main Story of Hard to see you can just unlock BEX from the start

B L O O D S T A I N E D

Amazing that such an awful and soulless movie could result in an actually good game with excellent sprite art.

If it doesn't have heavy rpg elements with equipment and shit it is not a metroidvania but a metroid clone or exploration action adventure, whichever sounds better to you. It is really fucking annoying when people lump them together and you get another boring shit instead of something that can satisfy the hole left by sotn..

So you're looking for more igavania and not Metroid or Castlevania, got it.
So you'd automatically disqualify La Mulana as well then.

>google rabi-rabi since people are talking about it
>anime tiddy shit
lmao and these are the people shitting on Hollow Knight?

kurovadis is as much of a metroidvania as cave story

People like Rabi-ribi despite the art style.
It's a testament to the strength of its gameplay.

Literally every bottom of the barrel anime game, that I'm sure even you would shit on, says this and its almost never true.

Cant beat Hollow Knight for the amount of content, and I'm sure it will be said 100 more times in this thread but its probably the best of the decade. Cant beat HKs production values either.

Axiom Verge I thoroughly enjoyed and like Hollow Knight, also excels at the feeling of mystery/discovery, perhaps even more than HK. The "glitch" mechanics are very fun and do wonders in making me feel like I'm somewhere that I shouldn't be. Gameplay/bossfights are merely serviceable so it can not be the best.

Bloodstained might be a contender but I havent played it yet.

I think Aquaria is massively underrated but it came out in 2007 somehow, fuck didnt realize how old that game is.

ESA is alright but obviously is the hipster pick that you only started playing because youve exhausted all other problems. Same people who like ESA like to recommend la mulana all the time

Attached: wizards.jpg (1920x2560, 425.34K)

Why hasn't there been a compilation of the GBA/DS Castlevanias? Does Konami hate money that much?

They don't even make games anymore lmao

Can you name one about which its fans themselves will tell you that they don't care or even dislike the art-style?

Never heard a personafag saying that he dislike the look of the game.

>Aquaria
I'll forgive the hollow knight fanboying for this, this is quality taste.

>ESA is alright but obviously is the hipster pick that you only started playing because youve exhausted all other problems.
The problem is ESA is it doesn't explain anything at all. It gives you a clear start and end goal, and you're expected to find the weirder side on your own.
The game outside of the main game is like triple the size and full of the most obscure fucking secrets and barely any documentation on it and the ones that do have it are incomplete.

Those two terms are interchangeable as sotn coined metroidvania in the first place.

>It looks cute on the surface but its surprisingly deep!
I've been hearing this about various games and other media for decades. Look i'm sure this rabbit game is fine but I'm not going to ignore the inherit coomer bias. Imagine if someone told you MLP is surprisingly deep despite its art style. I can guarantee you some asshole is saying that right now, and you should know better than to believe them.

The stuff outside of the main game is really low quality. Not worth the effort, even by following a guide.

>I've been hearing this about various games and other media for decades.
Again, give me some example of games.

More over Rabi-ribi isn't deep, it's a standard, well made Metroidvania.
I'm really just telling you not to judge a game by how it looks, but by how it plays.

Yeah that's fair, it's a fleeting moment of accomplishment when you figure something out only to realize it wasn't that special overall, though the spooky stuff at the end was pretty nice even if it does permanently corrupt your save.

Why does no one ever mention The Messenger? It's a good metroivania

Momodoria comes to mind. Also, I'm constantly trying out games, I'm not wasting my time on some coomer shit.

for me it's bloodstained

TL;dr the spooky shit for me

In this precise order.

La Mulana (remake)
La Mulana 2
Rain World
Enviromental Station Alpha
Valdis Story
Rabi Ribi
Axiom Verge
Ori

Everything else is trash, including Hollow Knight.

Attached: r.jpg (900x900, 114.1K)

see
>give anime a chance bro
never

fourth wall breaking is the lamest teen-bait meme gay shit

I've never seen someone shitting on Momodoria for it's art style, in fact it's probably one of it's strongest aspect.

Also I wouldn't call Momodoria bad, although I also would call it great. It's gameplay has some serious problems.

Hollow Knight isn't trash it's just noise that exists like basically every game from Team Ladybug. Still good games worth playing

My position was never that people openly state the art is bad, but the whole
>cute game with hidden complexity
meme is far too old and stale for me to be convinced by. Not even Hollow Knight zealots go this far.

What point are you trying to make?
Rabiribi is the only game among those that could be considered "anime".

ESA is my favorite. I love how dense the map is, I love how fast paced the combat is, I love the esoteric puzzles of the postgame, I love the lo-fi artstyle

Hollow Knight is pretty close tho

Anyone who is a fan of anime, or anime posts, is a retard who's opinion is without merit.

>cute game with hidden complexity
Who the fuck said that?
Does a game need to have "hidden complexities" to be good?

It's not just noise, it's subversive low-brow garbage that introduced sub-100 IQ retards to the genre and made any intelligent discussion impossible.

Hollow knight

>Metroid comes out
>non linear world design, power up based progression
>SotN comes out
>adds rpg mechanics, skills and gear system
>call it a Metroidvania
>most games in the "genre" lack rpg mechanics, skills and a gear system

What's the point then?
There isn't a single Metroid game that actually fits the genre definition of a Metroidvania.

Hollow Knight, with ESA very close behind. I've been playing Axiom Verge and while its fun, it doesn't stack up to either of these two games in terms of level design, controls, movement tech or boss battles. It DOES have great music and it feels the most "Metroidy" but it fails to compare to either of the other two games.

Bloodstained is a worthy mention even though its janky as hell - its quite fun.

because only fucking idiots use "Metroidvania" unironically. The term "Metroidvania" is for specifically Castlevania games that are Super Metroid clones as opposed to 3D or Classicvania. It's not a genre

The final boss fight against Mwyah was great, and I had fun with the maze

The tedious message finding stuff around the station was dumb but honestly there were a lot of cool secrets in ESA that made it fun to come back to. Really happy I 100%'d it.

Please summarize the base plot and hidden plot of the game.

The base plot is that you are a robot sent to go to a station to determine what happened. As you arrive you quickly find out that robots have massacred the humans on board and have basically started wrecking havoc across the station. This is the result of some kind of virus which has corrupted the machines, and in the climax of the game you either destroy the corrupted AI that is "orchestrating" the events, or you escape onto the nearby planet.

In situation A, it is revealed that you are infected and destroying the AI did not halt the virus. You proceed to return to base and start murdering all the humans you can find while spreading the virus.

In situation B, it is revealed that you are infected but that the virus inside you cannot fully control you, and it needs you operational to spread. The virus remarks that when someone finds your deactivated robot self it can spread again, and will wait while you sleep.

That's the end of the base plot.
