80% of the time yes

50/50

back then games weren't so focused on market profit and were just intended to be fun.

you are delusional. profit has always come first for commercial games

Soul is a tangible concept and immediately apparent to anyone with a soul.
All the OLD = BAD posters are literally walking husk NPCs.

then why does no one talk about modern indie games having SOUL, only games from 15+ years ago?

OLD

yes

Something about this is deeply upsetting

unironically left looks more pleasant to the eye.

when it's a zoomer coping, yes of course

1% of the time yes

No but Yas Forums is too stupid to articulate it properly so people get that misconception

I always thought soul referred to the fact that devs (whilst wanting to profit, obviously) had a vision/creative idea that they actually wanted to make, and didn't just pump out what big daddy publisher wanted them to, so that they could sell more DLC/microtransactions.

I already saw plenty of descriptions and attempts to explain. Not sure where you're looking.

No. I've played a couple of stages from it not long ago and it's definitely not nostalgia.

It's when passion and skill overcome the technical limitations of the time.

Yeah but was it an actual explanation that wasn't a drawn out
>old good
>new bad

OLD GOOD

Yes, do you ever read posts longer than 10 words? There's one right here already

Let's use an out of bounds debug room from a game, to show how bad the game looks.

Holy shit are you retarded?

That's not accurate either

Art trends change over time, as did the technology. However, what people usually call soul is just referring to a preference for certain artstyles and compositions that are no longer popular in the mainstream.

Yes. Why even pretend to be interested in a topic if you're just going to shut down every view point that's unlike yours?

The old games have a certain charm because of their simplistic graphics. That's about all. New games can have soul too. Unfortunately "soul vs soulless" is mostly used by absolute nostalgic retards.

no, it means it was made out of passion and new ideas with fun being the main goal
soulless means it was a company cashgrab where the devs are wageslaves with forced diversity who don't know what fun is

>out of bounds debug room
It's not. This image was not generated in Super Mario 64 or Super Mario 64 DS.

Petscop-level unsettling
>t. used to dream about games all the time as a kid

Then please enlighten us all as to what is the perfectly accurate description. Because apparently only you know it.

You weren't even alive back then, keep quiet while the adults are talking.

The chad monolith

>He says while posting a joke that he most likely takes seriously.

I understand how powerful nostalgia is but some people don't get that games get old. For example if you wanted to play Morrowind in 2020 for the first time it's near unplayable

Except Yas Forums still calls every indie game soulless trash, and every garbage nostalgia pixelwank soul.

I only said I've seen plenty of attempts. If you gather enough, you get a pretty good explanation.

>Technical limitations bred creativity
>Realism makes things look boring (refer to that dude from the old documentation)
>Games nowadays being 80% marketing by publishers, game design by psychologists and ideas being pitched by managers who wanna ride recent fad

cringey picture choice. didn't even read your coomment

Soul is ingenuity spawned from limitation
while is a broad explanation it's not wrong nor is it accurate either I'm honestly just considering people like OP's mindset and the usual that post something like "Atari Pacman = soul Arcade Pacman = soulless"

Attached: 1582940835519.png (650x700, 220.91K)

Nostalgia isn't what makes people tolerate these games, it's not being exposed to anything better.

Soul/soulless doesn't mean shit here.
I could say Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 on the GBA soul, Turtles in Time soulless and get a bunch of faggots going "based" or "fpbp".

I understand what people are saying with soul vs soulless but it gets so overused here as NEW THING BAD

soul = a game that the developers actually cared about, enjoyed making and were proud of the end result
soulless = a game where the developers were just doing their job with no passion for the project
also it's worth pointing out that soul =/= good

I played Morrowind for the first time in 2018 and had no problems with the gameplay

Because all of them steal their art and gameplay from all of the games that came before them. They don't have a soul or identity that they didn't rip off (often blatantly), from an existing IP. Fuck indie trash. Fuck indie trannies and FUCK YOU.

You can discard any post with the words soul/soulless 100% of the time.

NEW BAD

Post discarded

This hurts to look at

it's not that old games weren't made with profit in mind, it's more that they didn't cost so much to make so developers were allowed to take more risks

wat

This is also true for the word "kino".

right looks fucking disgusting kys

Soul, to me, just seems like a made up concept for whenever some idiot on Yas Forums is unable to properly articulate in words why he dislikes or likes some product. It's actually people nowadays are so fucking retarded they don't even bother to contemplate why they feel something.
