On the first turn move everyone to the left. Falcon knights have 8 movement which is high but not unreasonable, so if you get everyone far enough to the left you wont get ambushed. You have like 3 turns to do it.

I just finished my first playthrough (Blue Lions). Should I play through on NG+ or does that just make the game easier than it already is?

Blue lions has the hardest final boss so take that as you will

NG+ carries over the statue bonuses and you can spend renown to re-unlock all the skill levels you previously had, you be the judge

I am currently doing NG+ for the first time and it is substantially easier (BE->BL).

But Edelgard was revealed at that point to have caused multiple tragedies and terrorist attacks, been allied with the people that killed Jeralt, and brought soldiers there to kill Rhea, the priests, Dimitri and Claude. What else are you supposed to do, have peace talks? Edelgard sent Metodey to subdue them and Metodey was an ex-bandit that enjoys torturing people before murdering them.
