I think texture streaming and LOD loading wasn't that good at the time so nearly all objects just had full quality textures at all times.

The crazy thing to ME is that the game can hit 60 FPS in battles on the PS3 version, I always thought that the PS3 games besides a few minigames were hard locked to 30 with drops

Demon's Souls runs perfectly if you have a relatively modern gaming PC, I was just playing it the other day and a friend of mine with a more average PC was playing it just fine as well
