I hate the fact that people use Metroidvania to refer to all the games like that, when it was originally used to refer to the non-classic Castlevanias. SotN didn't contribute anything to the genre, it was literally just Super Metroid with swords.

Super Metroid has this part. There is very little reason to unequip most upgrades and you can have nearly all of them at once, but if you want to use spazer ice beam with no wave or plasma or turn off high jump you can.

I have yet to play a metroidvania with better level design than Super Metroid. I consider it a perfect game honestly. No igavania comes close in this regard and it's the most important aspect of the genre

Also yeah, I like HK more than any Igavania too. Those games have far bigger problems, such as the recycled assets all over the games, it take a toll on the quality of the series.

Yeah I really hate the map system, feels like they were trying too hard avoid the classic Metroid map but just made it shitty instead. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Yeah, that's kind of a pain in the ass at times, thought the game is pretty well designed so most of the areas have landmarks and stuff so you can always tell where you're supposed to be, other than in the Deepnest area and maybe some of the corridors on the city and the sewers, those are a bit samey.

havnt played hollowknight. does the game just not have a map at all? if it does, how does it differ from SOTN

I find it more interesting since there's more variety of weapons and attacks. You can just play however you want, while SM has 2 missile types, and a few blaster types.

I like SotN. I played through it from start to finish and enjoyed it a lot. I am still absolutely baffled by it's status as an all time great classic. Super Metroid is exemplary in every aspect while SotN is sorely lacking in difficulty in both combat and exploration.

You have to find the mapmaker in each stage before the map for that stage start to fill up. And it doesn't fill up as you travel, you need to rest at a save point to make it appear.

I'm in the exact same boat. I think it's a good game, I just don't understand why it's revered as one of the all time greats

SotN is a bigger game and has a lot of equipment customizations and cool powerups. Also, the controls are much more fluid and responsive than SM's floaty controls.

Have to find an NPC for the map(Metroid map room tier) of each area. If you miss it just go to the hub and buy it. To map "normally" you have to equip a charm and it only records the map when you get to a save point.

Its just superfluous and feels like an attempt to pad out the game honestly.

It does, but it doesn't auto-fill like in SotN or Metroid, you have to buy a map in-game first from a cartographer, and then if you want to know where you are in the map you have to equip a specific item. And the map only shows a few areas, if you want to fill the rest you have to buy a pen, then explore the uncharted areas and then go sit on a save point to update the map. It's actually a pretty indepth system, made to force you to explore the unknown.

You must have played it recently. If you played it 1997-2000 you'd be blown away by it. There's nothing else like it for the Playstation and it feels so much bigger and robust than Super Metroid.

Looking for the cartographer whenever you get to a new area and afterwards trying to fill up the map is pretty fun, though.

Symphony stunk for me until I got Richter Mode and could play it through as an actual Belmont Castlevania the way God intended. Igarashi's rager for Alucard and for writing the main characters out of the series for a clear pathway for new OCs is insufferable.

Hollow Knight is about burrowing down deeper into an underground world that's mostly devoid of life, so the idea of stumbling into the unknown and losing yourself for a while adds to the mood of the game

But it's not the same in other Metroidvanias. You don't have that same feeling of being truly lost because you always have the map that's updating

First, the game was under the direction of producter Toru Hagihara, and the writers were both Iga and Toshiharu Furukawa. These guys get forgotten about but really it's Hagihara's game, with Iga and the others giving input under his guidance. So the Father of SotN is Hagihara.

Second, the X series was intentionally a side series of games for the Castlevania series. The N64 games were meant to be the canon mainline games, and because of the side-story nature of SotN, they were allowed to go a little nuts. How about a new kind of protagonist that's graceful? Hey Iga how could we fit that into the game's canon? Oh there's an Alucard guy? Okay we'll use him. Oh let's get a new artist, one who does romance fantasy covers. Oh and let's make it exploration based to extend the time since Iga said he kept seeing copies of Castlevania games for sale since people only played them once, beat them, then sold them. Oh and the girl who did the music for Bloodlines was kinda cool, let's give her another shot.
