I'd argue that trolls still get the short end of the stick when it comes to more modern games where they didn't have time to develop a healthy goon population and culture before the matchmaking cancer set in. Even more so if the game attracts any of the league of leukemia type of sweaty tryhards that scream when they feel that someone is "throwing the game".

You can of course say things like oh no but there are community servers in matchmaking games like tf2 and csgo but that doesn't change the fact that the introduction of matchmaking to these franchises debilitated the health of the community servers that used to be the beating heart of online gaming, and not because matchmaking is better, but because of the marketing systems and social control afforded to these companies by the internet by sites such as twitch, r*ddit and games 'journalism' publishers

One thing I noticed, during the beta of Dota and LoL the games were shot more relaxed, no meta established no items or exp to win, no fucking Rankin to lose.
During that time the matchmaking was very comfortable.
1000's of hours and global eSports phenomena later the only time I had this kind of fun in Dota was when I got into the low priority (you were naughty) queue.
No expectations no demands just trying to play the game and have fun. That was the moment I realised something had gone horrible wrong and quit.
Mind you I never played ranked queue because I liked to try stupid builds with Midas still got reported for it all the time.

Ranked modes are pointless, they don't prove anything and are nothing more than a poorly disguised skinners box to keep the dumbasses playing. Adding them always hurts a game. Besides community servers already had the tendancy to segregate themselves out by skill plateaus.
Matchmaking in the long run means that if you solo queue you are gonna get teamed up with noobs or against Pro for the sake of the 50:50 win lose ratio.
In servers you could get your ass get handed to you then talk with that guy and learn a bit more. In MMR there's always the chance that the guy who seemed Pro just got lucky. Got fed, had a good or way worse in last hitting wise lane partner. Chances are you'll see that guy only once and then never again.
ranked and competitive modes can be achieved with community servers without fracturing the standard. Back in the day you actually had to sign up to play competitive on a locked server.
in fact most community servers back in the day had their own rankings that people used to have fun with. Clout actually meant something back then. Not like today where it's just soulless brand worship and attempted eceleb emulation

Older simpler point based matchmaking systems did, newer ones are all about maintaining a 50% win rate and are the reason why you can see massive swings in skill levels in between games. Modern matchmaking systems don't give a fuck about having the same skilled people fight each other.
