Yes you can, the backcompat catalogue is massive, and all of them at the very least get resolution and performance bumps, a lot of the more popular games get specific enhancements like texture resolution increases, specific effects, etc.
xbox Series X will take this futher with HDR automatically applied to any game.

I upgraded from a 970 to a 2080 in 2018 for 4k/1440p and it's been fucking smooth sailing ever since. Just because they weren't 2x better than the 10xx cards doesn't mean they're shit. Expensive? Yes. Shit? No. Effortless and never had 1 single driver problem or issue? Absofuckinglutely. It's been a great card and stomps everything.

I do think Corona will be around for a long time, longer than most people expect right now.
That doesn't mean GPU prices will drastically inflate, because especially in trying times like this they wouldn't make any sales like that. Not just that, most of their production is either automated or comes from china, which already reopened many factories (and also uses literal slaves).
GPU prices are gonna be fine, the real worry here are possible delays in the release schedule.

I'm not saying the 2080 isn't a great card, but it's great because it's just a 1080ti.
