Part of it is the fact that he's a deep character. He has depression, but you wouldn't know that unless you are aware of the genocide run, or analyze his behavior during pacifist really closely.
The reasons for his depression are also mysterious. It could be a genuine mental disorder, or it could be for a good reason, which is only subtly hinted at in Easter eggs.
