I've only played the first Symphonia, but if Lloyd is considered the most obnoxious, then the Tales franchise is doing pretty good on protags.

When they're not trying to make him anime stupid, he's fine. I can't stand Reid. He might not be obnoxious, but he's an outright bully and is oblivious to all the pussy being thrown at him (although I guess Lloyd is similar in that regard).

I liked him as a protag because there was nothing special about him. He wasn't some chosen hero or anything, he was some average dude with no special talent who voluntarily decided to aid the actual chosen hero.

Reid's pretty much just honest about being tired of getting dragged around all across two worlds purely due to circumstance. Even Farah eventually admits that she's not sure why she's even there to begin with. It's his tone of voice that makes him seem like an asshole, but you're right that there's no excuse for him to not pick up on Farah's feelings towards him after the third Seyfert Trial.

Zelos doesn't even betray the party, or at least isn't revealed to be betraying them, until the final visit to the Tower of Salvation; wherein he either fights you to the death, or is revealed to be a double agent who was actually working against Cruxis all along. Zelos doesn't actually expect anyone to trust him because he considers himself to be worthless. If anything Kratos is the one who keeps expecting Lloyd to trust him after working against him multiple times.

Farah opens up in Efreet Cave. She just wants to help people. It's only later that she reveals it's out of guilt for what happened when they were kids. And tone alone doesn't explain away his callous and unapologetic attitude to Zeele. Guy was an outright bully as a kid and still tries to be gruff with him later on.

Given, it seemed Keele has a history of callousness and resentment towards Reid as well. You might say it's because of Reid always leaving him in the dust with physical activities, but it's no use debating over the chicken or the egg. They were young boys growing up together after all and Keele probably never had the confidence to say anything about Reid's behavior towards him. I don't remember if Reid ever got put on blast for his attitude but at least Keele got the cute Celestian he always wanted at the end.
