2 has a far better story with a much more fun protagonist, who is also much more fleshed out than a mumbly asshole in a hoodie who speaks like twice.
All the dumb little optional side content, even the checkpoint races, are given an in-universe reason for happening, which is really interesting by open world game standards.
The world itself is much more interesting and looks way better, the city is much much smaller but the different areas look a lot different which is much better than the first game's endless same rectangles.
Despite the movement mechanics being downgraded, the world being made of lots of different interesting geography in my opinion makes it more fun to traverse than the first.
Graphics are much better and the game is incredibly violent, the new kills you can do with the weapons are great.

Combat is more polished but again there's a lot less you can do with it. less weapons, less of the feeling of being an unstoppable monster.
world is perhaps too small despite the increased level of detail. Another 2 or 3 districts would have made the game feel less cramped.
There's only 3 or 4 weapons iirc, which is way the fuck down from the first game.
You can wield 2 weapons at once attaching them to either X or Y, but weapons no longer have movesets that use both buttons so the amount of stuff you can do is actually lower.

Both games are unpolished, unfinished messes that do different things well. I'd give both games a solid 6.5 and say they're both worth playing on their own merits.

I recently replayed first one and PC port is fucking garbage. I had sub 30 fps on 1660ti 16gb of ram no matter what settings i used to fix that i had to unplug all my USB devices apart from 360 pad lmao never saw shit like that and i saw tons of garbage PC ports with weird shit .

horrible frame pacing that makes the game look like it's running at sub 60fps even if it's running at 120+

I replayed both 1 and 2 this month. I fucking love these games, even 2 despite destroying virus mercer's character. Gonna finish 100%

2's story is really comical and silly that I find entertaining, the main problem is that they streamlined the gameplay way too much and removed a ton of fun moves. It does have better bosses at least

Sounds like you two got lucky, cause I always seem bad things about the PC ports of the games, more so of the first one.
Steam reviews for the games are filled with complaints about the game running poorly or not at all, and the PC gaming wiki is filled with issues that the games have.

Theres something wrong with both on them, but only on certain hardware. If you don't roulette into that fucked hardware, it runs on a toaster.

1 barely even has anything of a story, and while the plot twist concept is somewhat interesting, Mercer is boring as fuck. He barely talks, when he does he doesn't sound interested in what he's doing, his motivation was boring.

Heller was way more fleshed out and fun. Seeing a video game character outside of Mortal Kombat react with genuine GLEE at the fact that he acquired a new power that allows him to easily rip people's intestines out and laughing about it to himself is amazing. Heller's love of violence and complete lack of respect or patience for anyone's bullshit made him an incredibly endearing protagonist. edgy characters don't tend to have fun. Mercer was way more edgy, reminded me of Shadow The Hedgehog.

Not the same user but other than having some interesting little quirks here and there, Heller wasn't interesting. He was angry all the time and threw insults even to the air itself. Granted, it was funny sometimes (when he kicked a dude out of a helicopter), but most of the time it was kinda plain.

I personally find Mercer much more interesting due to him basically almost behaving like a newborn, his questioning about not actually being the one who originally inhabited that body, and about life itself. Yes, it wasn't like that all the game, and I'm not saying the game's perfect either, but Mercer's character left a more lasting impression than Heller.

Not very good, what is interesting about Prototype 1 is the fact a freak of science actually manages to grow a conscience by the end of it, other than that it's the gameplay which really matters.
