>they made a better game without crunch
fucking how?

Those tweets are such blatantly transparent bait and it fascinates me that people fall for it.

What the fuck is this retarded crunch meme

Yeah AC is for fagbabies but why not just fucking pay an actress and get live capture footage + special effects if you care about things looking that realistic

what the fuck is even crunch

anyone who works in software knows crunch sucks.

crunch is what leads to those buggy bethseda games people play. Management pushes low cost and the product reflects it. this is why indie devs with real jobs are so baller, they make kino without crunch.

A game that delays and takes it's time has soul and fun gameplay
A game that rushes (crunch) lacks soul and is just a shallow playable movie.

Game was gonna be shit with or without any crunch, only differences is that it is getting delayed because they keep having to hire new people.

It's a candy bar.

The Last of Us 2 is made with an engine that has been worked on since the first uncharted game. The new animal crossing was build from scratch.

white chocolate crunch bar is/was the best.

I know it's shitty chocolate but I still love it.

What the fuck even is white chocolate?

Yas Forums will pretend they dislike crunch because sony does it despite always saying that they just don’t care as long as the final product were good

It's always retarded ass foreign fucks giving Sonybros a bad name

you sure it doesn't already work up from that amiibo game engine?

Crunch refers to when studios have their employees do significant amounts of over time or extra hours in general to push a game to completion. Some studios (Rockstar, Naughty Dog are the biggest examples) are known in the industry for having their employees crunch a LOT. Presumably because they're desirable studios to work at due to the prestige.

This is typically seen as a bad thing because employees typically have little choice in it - if they won't do extra hours, the studio will find someone else who will. Which means overworking people and having a significant employee turnover rate.

The Animal Crossing devs stated their reasoning for the delay of New Horizons from a 2019 to a March 2020 release was to make sure the dev team could complete the game while "still having a healthy work-life balance".

Due to these, some twitter accounts that are actively known PS fanboy types have been making tweets about how Crunch makes The Last of Us "look like a real AAA game", while no crunch makes a game like Animal Crossing (which they are implying looks bad). The tweets took off because people fell for the obvious bait.

The Last of Us 2 is literally a vaporware now

I fucking hate consoomer culture. These braindead little faggots praising overworking conditions.

delicious

oh so crunch is one of the reasons why the last decade was so full of garbage games?

>would've had a playable demo in the past few weeks at PAX if not for Corona
>no reason to believe it's not coming on its planned release date in two months
Please be aware that when you use words incorrectly, you slowly chip at what the word means because other people may learn from you and also use the word incorrectly.

If a AA or AAA game seems promising but ultimately fails to deliver, you can bet your ass its because of greedy fucking publishers pushing their deadlines. That and outsourcing.

I don't think it's as simple as one factor being the cause of such a blanket statement.

What the fuck, I thought the Japanese were meme'd as being work-obsessed NoLife losers? How did the West become the Worker Drones?

maybe practicing reading would help you understand better user

Gamedev here. Photorealism is easier to make with enough resources because it's mostly third parties that make all the systems to digitize stuff. While the entry bar is very expensive and time consuming to get started, once that's out of the way most of the process is automatic, which is why companies like Ubisoft and EA can shit out AAA games so fast.

While Animal Crossing artstyle is nothing to write home about, someone still hand drew and hand modeled most of the stuff. For a game like TLoU most of the work is cleaning up scanned models and textures.

In games like Cyberpunk 2077 and GTA the long dev times are due to the sheer amount of content when compared to stuff like the latest CoD, not the complexity of the visuals.

Japs work harder on average than most other countries but big AAA American companies literally don't understand how game development works and just want games out as quickly as possible. Most Japanese companies actually understand how game development works and give their teams time.

Hell Monolithsoft (The xenoblade guys) advertises itself as a job with zero overtime.

I unironically wonder how the the working enviroment of those dudes look like that make all those EA sport games. Must be fucking living hell.

Nintendo supposedly tries to avoid that issue by just kicking everyone out of the building at 6.

Every country has some degree of this shit.

Naughty Dog and Rockstar can get away with it because everyone and their dog wants to work there because "I worked at Rockstar on GTA" is obviously something a lot of people want to do, but also looks good on a resume.

The problem is if your workforce is easily replacable, then you can work them harder because they know they'll be replaced if not, and ultimately pressure them into working like that.

Dudes who make posts like these are the same ones who look at Mario in Unreal Engine and scream "Nintendo, HIRE THIS MAN!"

It's also worth noting that in the particular case of Naughty Dog, the company doesn't really use producers for some reason, meaning each person on the team kinda does their own thing, and because the team doesn't communicate well all the time, a lot of work ends up getting thrown out meaning wasted time.

what even is the left game, some unknown indie trash?

Apart from pretty much Square-Enix most Jap companies are pretty good in regards to crunch either through having enough people or being smart in how they reuse existing content/code libraries/etc.
The few that have some crunch are still looking at it as about one and a half weeks to just under a month at most right before release. Others have none and operate intelligently instead. It also helps that the documentation and planning documents for Jap games are 90% about game mechanics clearly marked down while the other 10% is setting/world stuff so there's no fuckery with what the mechanics are meant to be like.

latest crash bandicoot movie

The problem with that retards analogy is that he's assuming graphics determine how much effort a game has put into it. Comparing mechanical depth(the actual meat of games) AC is actually far more complex considering ND use rectangular collision boxes on enemies and hitscan for bullets as well as the janky looking magnetism that gets excused because of the pretty graphics are actually insanely lazy in how they're executed. Meanwhile the amount of content "under the hood" of AC is far more complex with values for items to grow, time checks, the customization and event flags. It's far more complex to develop than a linear set-piece game.

Weird how so many of the diehard Sony fanboys seem to be from third world countries.
Does it have something to do with the fact that Nintendo and Microsoft didn't think their countries were worth the effort, and Sony was still supporting the PS2 out there up to the launch of the PS4?

Its weird to me that Playstation in particular has such a strange fanbase, and I'm really curious what causes them to act like this.

Just like the New Game! anime xD

What's the game on the left? Whatever it is, it reeks of boring.

In South America, SEA and most of Europe the PS1 and PS2 had like a 20 year lifespan.

its just a teaser trailer for a cinematic, we haven't seen any gameplay yet

>snoygroids are unironic third world shitskins

yes

it really makes me think

Isn’t it harder to make a cartoony artsyle game compared to a realistic one? Especially if there are face models and mocap?
You just scan someone’s face use mocap to animate them and clean it up.
But with cartoony you have to design everything from scratch and animate it by hand because realistic animations look weird on a cartoony character.

Becauae Crunch doesn't actually help shit, this has been proven time and time again. By putting these people in intensely stressful situations, they are more likely to make mistakes and/or not care about the finished product. The only people that push this Crunch meme are literal sociopaths that don't understand basic human emotions.

>Sony Pony's are in full force after Animal Crossing is already a success before it even releases

what it making you thought?

In my experience realism is more expensive and technically challenging to achieve and requires good artistry and technical proficiency to be done well, however it's easy to get outsourcing to help.
Whereas a cartoony or stylish artstyle requires more artistry and consistency and is more difficult to outsource reliably but is usually less challenging on the production side.
On the pre-production side I think they're equal in terms of challenge.

Tell that to david jaffe.

Boomers created crunch

>Becauae Crunch doesn't actually help shit, this has been proven time and time again
no it hasn't you idiot
people crunch because it gets their games finished on time

Japanese culture encourages people to enjoy their work, but they're "reportedly" working less overtime than Americans and other Westerners by a wide margin.
People will doubt the data, obviously because of the stereotype.

They're both shit, why did mentally ill spic tranny mean by that?

That's China

Sorry, just so that everyone understands what you mean,
>bosses/producers/"job creators" crunch [employees] because it gets their product to purchase in time.
