The gameplay was terrible however.
It truly was.
Not true at all. People praised it for its numerous innovations. Kids at school yard were raving about a fucking steel pipe being a weapon, I kid you not.
>played it as a kid
>scared the shit out if me
>never finished it
>still remember the scary fog
>still remember getting hardstuck at the piano section
>even with guides from magazines and 5 minute internet times at school or library
>im still too scared to play it even today
>will be 30 in a few years
Good game
Why are you lying? The gameplay was piss poor even for its time.
Play fortnite, zoomer
It wasn't, the gameplay was better than Resident Evil. It had a full 3D camera and melee weapons were actually viable
yep
Name 5 survival horror games with better combat.
I'm older than you. I played it when it was current too; you probably didn't.
Being better than RE isn't saying much. RE had incredibly bad gameplay until 4.
Darkwood, Resident 4, 5, 6. RE2make. Dead Space 1/2. The Evil Within 1/2.
>RE had incredibly bad gameplay until 4.
And that's exactly the point where it went to shit
Fuck off now
It was not better than RE, in no way imaginable. Having a "free" camera doesn't make a game automatically better. (and camera was also very awkward). Also weapon/level/enemy design was a bit worse (you fight enemies all the same way)
Puzzles were better in SH I think, and the game's atmosphere is thick. I like the game very much but it's not better than RE.
I also hate the whole SH1-3 story. It's so fucking embarassing and convulted for no reason through and through. 3 especially. 2 is a masterpiece though.
>Naming games that came after SH
Case in point, it was good at the time.
>OHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOOO I'M GUILTY OVER MY GAY NIGGER WIFE I'M GOING INSAAAAAAAAAAAANE
Why the fuck do zoomers say this shit?
I love all the tiny details and easter eggs it has. It's incredible considering how small the team was.
You might not like it, but 4 is easily the best game in the series. It turned to schlock, but that doesn't make the gameplay worse than the garbage that is SH1.
Good compared to two other games that played like complete dogshit. Just because there are a lack of alternatives, that doesn't make it good all of the sudden.
Because it's true. I'm also older than you
>Just because there are a lack of alternatives, that doesn't make it good all of the sudden.
Re-read

This scene still lingers in my mind. I find it incredibly sad.
Just fuck off at this point
Nobody cares about zoomer opinions
There is not a single Resident Evil game that has managed to match the atmosphere and sound design that even the first Silent Hill has.
RE may have better gameplay, but it's still a retarded inventory-management + exploration + 20IQ puzzle solving game, while SH is a fucking work of art of psychological horror.
I will never understand why the two games are so often compared while they cater to completely different audiences and offer completely different experiences. Silent Hill has never been about killing zombies/monsters.
It is poor for games on the whole.
How old are you? Don't embarass yourself by lying either.
Not even him, but SH isn't even scary lol. It's literally kill some shitty monsters that can't even handle a dude with a stick. Literally the monster in SH pose less threat then a normal person, and they're basically handicapped.
You are the same kind of person that watches speedruns
At least she didn't go out like in the movie.
I hate the 2nd half of the SH movie. The 1st half is kino
Never watched a speedrun in my life. Now what? lol
It's specifically these parts of the original Silent Hill which are my favourite. They're so mundane, yet very detailed. Like, you've been to places like this. It felt so real, even now. Still my favourite Silent Hill game to this day!
If you fail to immerse yourself in the atmosphere I'm truly sorry for you, you're missing an incredible experience.
Yeah, I have always thought that the first RE entries (haven't played the ones after 3) were just boring action shooters, while SH made me shit bricks in 2006.
Still frustrating that they casted Harry's role to a woman for the reason that "Oh, becuase you know, nothing's stronger than a Mother's Love." What a load of shit. Harry Mason was purely kino for breaking this mold.
Harry looks weird in opengl to me but I really like the PS1 graphics otherwise. Even the texture warping problem from PS1 added to the atmosphere I think, though it was unintentional and didn't really benefit most other games.
Atmosphere needs to be complimented by a tangible and potent threat. SH stops being scary the second you fight and realize how feeble your opponents are. I pity you brainlets
The only Silent Hill that remotely scared me was Homecoming

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
DON'T use W10's own virtual disc app! Don't install under C:\Program Files\ !
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
Follow the SH2 widescreen fix site's instructions to the teeth, and you should be fine.
For 3 & 4, check the Guide.
>Protips
-Play in the release order
-Never play below Normal difficulty
-Replaying them all is recommended
-Turn down the ingame Brightness setting
-Don't try to kill everything that moves, especially outdoors
-Turning OFF the flashlight can really help
They get compared because they are both survival horror games. With that thinking you can't compare any game beside games in the same series and that's retarded.
I think you are right that the game is more "atmosphere" focused, but that doesn't justify its shortcomings. SH is still a game, and as such it has many elements we are used to see in the genre and games in general.
Work of art of psychological horror is such a smart ass thing to say. It doesn't say anything. I admitted the game is thick with atmosphere, but I also think that it isn't sufficient in both 1/3 because it isn't supported by the story (very very bad)
Not that RE games have better stories mind you. But they do not pretend to be anything more than B movie tier stories, whereas SH obviously wants to offer more. Only 2 is capable of that, offering a mature and heartfelt story.
I also think you are discrediting RE atmosphere too much only because it's not as calm/dreadful as SH games. They have different objectives in that regard, and I think they both succeed in conveying these intentions.
An experience in cowardice if you're a fearful weakling?
>SH stops being scary the second you fight and realize how feeble your opponents are.
I still get a tense feeling when an enemy grabs me or gets too close because of the good sound design. I don't really think about how feeble they are. And games where monsters are something you can't fight just ends up being annoying.
pretty much, like all in the serie, but they are the best horror/unsettling games of all time.
Theme song was kino
look at this dumbass zoomer
The fog was heavenly compared to the darkness. I felt so much more comfortable in the fog
WRONG
It's not knowing what's two meters away from you that breeds fear, the incumbent menace signaled by your radio which may assume any form that your imagination is capable of conjuring. Read around about it or just watch this vsauce video: youtube.com
Also, in SH3 enemies are much more aggressive and dangerous, you may want to give that a chance. Otherwise I'm sorry for you, continue managing your inventory and avoiding all enemies just to get to a couple of decent boss fights in the most unsatisfactory third person shooting every conceived.
To each their own. I know some people simply lack those critical analysis skills, and completely lose track of what's going on, but I'm just not one of those people. And nobody said nothing about "not fighting," but Darkwood keeps enemies potent throughout the game. To nobody's surprise, it's much scarier simply due to the fact you can never feel at ease.
>cowardice
Harry Mason is a common man who finds himself in literal hell, and despite being scared shitless he goes on because he wants to save his daughter. If you can't understand even this, this is the unmistakable proof that RE fans are sub-80 IQ dudebros, it's a fucking lost cause.
Im still blown away by this cinematic. Even tho the models have aged a little bit, everything looks incredible even for today. The camera, the music, the animation, is all fucking incredible. And to this day, this scene still fucking scares me.
Does this board shit on SH now too? Way past the point of retardation.
It's not about lacking critical analysis skills, it's about turning your brain off whenever you play a game.
not him, played the demo first, doesnt even know what i was playing but i was hooked.
Buyed the game day one with my teen economies.
Best experience in my life, but i raged a lot with its shit clunky, unprecise combat system.
the gameplay was shit. Deal with it
plus the fact that you could stomp enemies on the ground
it was so cruel and brutal at the time everyone was talking about that, I mean there were more gory and agressive games out there back then, but the whole horror atmosphere and graphics made it much more effective
>"It is I that possesses the right opinion. Here: listen to this meme opinion that someone came up for me because I lack meaningful critical and independent thought."
Just because you and some other faggot literally shit yourselves over atmosphere doesn't mean the rest of us do. The radio stops being scary when you know you will bash whatever arbitrary creature's head in with your plank.
SH3 is the easiest due to the incredible amount of tools the player has and Heather is a walking Battle tank.
When he realizes all the enemies are slow, stupid, weak, snap easily succumb to a piece of wood, he is fine.
>"It is I that possesses the right opinion, because I say others lack meaningful critical and independent thought."
Hang yourself zoomer
It's just cynical fuckers who don't play games and hate seeing anything praised, shitting on them to "balance it out"
imagine seething this much about people enjoying a popular game
Correct, but it's because my criticism stands. I'm also older than you. Know your place, zoomie
Imagine seething about people criticizing it.
Millennial here, you're probably a zoomber (95-99). Just go play Dead Space, it shits on RE from all points of view.
Which specific scene is this?
bruh
no high-functioning adult with self-respect goes on the internet to brag about their age
holy shit you sound like a huge faggot, get over yourself
Is the Lisa Garnard death scene.
>"shut up Im old"
>"NO IM OLDER SO IM RIGHT"
great thread, faggots
