Yeah, it felt like it exchanged an interesting story about mental illness, explored in a unique way through poems, with an entertaining but unambitious thrill ride. It was really disappointing to me.

I liked the idea of having the girl you fail to save disappear in the next loop, which gave a sense of consequence to your actions towards any character.
But ultimately the concept was wrapped up in a dumb way with it just being Monika going past the 4th wall to delete them.

The VN is deliberately made as generic and unappealing as possible in the first act. The characters are cookie-cutter stereotypes and the dialogue in that section was supposedly the hardest part of the game for Salvato to make just because writing a lot of deliberately generic dialogue wears down the mind. That there are people who want a version of DDLC with just a normal Act 1, and who fixate on Act 1 of the game when waifubaiting, or whose favorite part of the game is Act 3 and they wish it could be expanded to last forever, is absurd to me, especially if I decide to peek into /ddlc/ where it's seemingly entirely populated by those people. It feels like they completely missed the entire point of the game in the worst way, on par with Baldi's Basics fans. I pray Salvato never listens to them by making a non-horror DDLC spinoff.
That being said the Act 2 girls, if you strip away the creepypasta shit, are a lot more interesting to me. It's bizarre how deliberately exaggerating their personalities to be even more unrealistic ends up making them more human for me. Both Yuri and Natsuki felt a lot genuine throughout, Yuri's self-awareness at her mental degradation and Natsuki's sincere concern for her friend and paranoia of what Monika's doing. Sayori was similar in Act 1, probably intentionally since she was also getting fucked up by Monika at the time. If you removed every single spooky face, weird text and jumpscare I'd still think Act 2 was the height of the game.
