With the Corona Virus getting worse and me staying home I'm thinking of playing Resident Evil. I have never played the series before and have only heard some things about it. What game should I start with and what version (that can be emulated on PC)? Should I start with the PS1 version of RE1?

Release order is always the best option.
Do NOT start with any of the Remakes!
The first REmake (2002) is a great game and very similar to classics in every possible way, but it too benefits from playing classic RE1 first.

There's a few versions out there, so hold on while I dig out my guides.

Okay so, The order of release:

>1-3
>CV
>REmake
>Zero
>4-6.

As an old fan of the series, I'd honestly just stop playing the games after RE5, and move to Silent Hill 1-4 afterwards instead.

with the OG-RE1,you got... a mountain of options:
>The original 1996 RE on PS1, Saturn and PC (minor differences).
>the first "Director's Cut" version on PS1 and PC, with new content.
>the second, notorious "Director's Cut - Dual Shock Edition", with the terribad new OST.
>Nintendo DS port, "Deadly Silence"; arguably the best version with new stuff + QOL upgrades.

The first REmake was made by the original devs, to the veteran fans of the franchise, so the devs made sure to not only incorporate as many ideas they originally couldn't on PS1 hardware, but they also tried to ensure that returning players couldn't just safely rely on their past knowledge of RE1 to cheese it through. It PLAYS nearly identical to RE1 though.

For RE2 and 3, there's a few less versions, but the GC ports are mostly sought-after ones.
There's fine PC ports too, but they aren't on digital distribution services, and need fan-patches to run OK now.
If you just wanna PLAY the games and that's it, and don't mind 240p visuals, just emulate the PS1 classics / buy them from PSN Store (only available on PS3 and PSP, because Sony).

Here's a comparison chart for RE2 and 3 versions + some DL links to the classics:

...Continuing a bit,
RE4 and up are on Steam, so those shouldn't be a challenge.
For 4, the "Ultimate HD" port is the way to go. Make sure to avoid the older, 2007 port. It's awful.

RE5 and 6 are these "fun with friends" games, being designed with co-op in mind.
They are campy as fuck, but especially 5 brings a few long-running character arcs to their finales, so it might be worth sticking through.

What comes to spinoffs, I was quite fond of the Dead Aim on PS2.
The Outbreak Files 1 and 2 were fun multiplayer games, and can be run online even today using emulators or hacked consoles. Here's a guide for that. Alone with bots, it is a less stellar experience.

If you want something like RE4 afterwards, check out the "Cold Fear". It's on PC too.

Attached: RE Outbreak set-up guide 2019.png (1482x2448, 834.25K)

>Silent Hill 1-4 afterwards instead.
funny you mention that as I've played Silent Hill 1-4 already. Thanks for the links and guide. What's the exact difference between the directors cut and the original without spoilers if possible or are the differences real minor? I'll probably emulate the PS1 game since that's how I played Silent Hill 1.

I started with the remake 2002 when I was 12, what are you going to do about it?

>funny you mention that as I've played Silent Hill 1-4 already
Attaboy! I would assume you will have no problems adjusting to classic REs' playstyle in that case, as Silent Hill was legit "just anothe RE-clone" at first.

>What's the exact difference between the directors cut and the original without spoilers
New camera-angles, new unlockables, new re-arranged play mode that shifts some stuff's location in the gameworld, and a playable pre-release demo of RE2.
The "Dual Shock" edition was supposed to also ship with an un-censored, full color version of the legendary live-action opening FMV, but for whatever reasons that didn't happen. I think the PC port of DC is uncensored though.

If you want more RE-style action afterwards, also check out the Dino Crisis games.
They're quite legit "RE with dinosaurs".

I am saying that REmake will be a MUCH more fascinating experience if you have played the classic RE1 first, as a lot of the game was altered and expanded to keep the old vets on the edges of their seats. The devs themselves told in an oldass interview that REmake is roughly 70% all new in comparison to RE1.
Sure, you do get mostly the same story, similar setting and quite the same gameplay style out of it. It's not like the 2019's demake of RE2, which is just a soft-reboot of sorts, built on a generic over-shoulder shooter system that's been used in most 2010's AAA games.

>worse
Explain

In cuckafornia all the stores and schools around my area are shut down.

There's thousands of new infections and hundreds of new deaths happening every day.
Take you don't read news?

I'll just post versions I recommend in terms of how easy they are to obtain.
>Resident Evil
Emulate the PSX Director's Cut version. Make sure the version doesn't say Dualshock or Greatest Hits. I recommend doing two playthroughs as well, one for each character and each difficulty (Normal and Advanced (will be called Arranged in the versions I told you to avoid)). Chris is the Hard mode and Jill is Easy.
If you have trouble with PSX emulation, the slightly inferior DS version is your next best bet.
>Resident Evil 2
>Resident Evil 3
The stellar HD Project mod for the GCN is a good way to experience these games. I recommend also getting the FMV packs and just following the instructions to set them up. You'll need the ISOs of these games for GCN, both are just one disc.
Keep in mind with RE2 there is a shitton of post-game content to sink your teeth into, depending on how good you are at the game.
As for RE3, you may find Hard mode way too hard, and Easy mode way too braindead.
>Resident Evil CODE:Veronica
Since you're already using Dolphin, may as well continue using it. This is a two disc download.
There is also an HD Remaster on PS3 and Xbox 360.
>Resident Evil (2002)
>Resident Evil 0
>Resident Evil 4
GCN is what I recommend for these three, but they all have functional PC versions. Play in the listed order as well.
>Resident Evil 5
PC Gold Edition bundle.
>Resident Evil Revelations
>Resident Evil 6
>Resident Evil Revelations 2
All on PC
>Resident Evil 7
Get the version with all the DLC, game feels hollow compared to the rest of the series without it.
>Resident Evil 2 (2019)
Again, version with all the DLC solely for those extra costumes and original music. It's an extra $10
>Resident Evil 3 (2020)
Not out yet, but PC.
In my next post I will breakdown spin-offs and side media and where they go

>the slightly inferior DS version is your next best bet.
Deadly Silence is the BEST version by far though.

>mega.nz/#!QNt1RYDb!aNtMZ4KSM8aovTfUf4jXhlrj4PvYpH41cMHT9Ve3ElM
This RE2 link is dead

That bad huh?

>you may find Hard mode way too hard,
RE3's "hard" is just the regular mode of RE1-2. As in, you don't start with a military arsenal of your own right off the bat, and need to loot better gear + plan your game savings more carefully.

>It's an extra $10
It's all free if you go to the Yarrharr beach.
Giving Crapcom shekeIs for this jewish practice of not making finished games anymore would be cancerous AF.

Spin-off time! This post will cover only ones I deem important/accessible.
>Gun Survivor
PSX exclusive aside from a dogshit Taiwanese PC port. Very rough around the edges, but if you enjoy the lore in the first three games, give it a shot.
Ignore lightgunfags, this plays like shit no matter what you do.
>Wesker's Report
Came with CODE:Veronica, so watch it either before or after you play it. It's a 20 minute video on youtube. It's been retconned to hell and back though.
>Gun Survivor 2: CODE:Veronica
PS2 exclusive and dogshit, as well as basically non-canon. It's a dream taking place after CV or in the middle, but it doesn't matter.
>Wesker's Report II
Came with REmake in Japan, but DC Douglas (Wesker's VA) did a full audio version of it available on youtube. This is like 40 minutes but has more canonical info.
>Gun Survivor 4: Heroes Never Die (JPN) / Dead Aim (everywhere else)
The most fun of the Gun Survivor series, and feels the most like an RE game. PS2 exclusive, again, play if you enjoyed the lore of 1-3.
>Outbreak 1 and 2
PS2 exclusives that you can play online as detailed in someone else's post far above mine.
Play if you enjoy the setting and files of 2 and 3.
>Gaiden
GBC game intended to act as supplemental material to CV, is now non-canon.
>Degeneration
CG movie, takes place after 4.
>Umbrella Chronicles & Darkside Chronicles
Wii rail shooters, both canonical. Umbrella Chronicles was what retconned a lot of Wesker's Report, so if you have to play one, play that one.
I suggest playing both before 5.
>Damnation
CG movie, takes place after 5.
>Operation Raccoon City
Non-canon and shit. Available on PC.
>Umbrella Corps.
Somewhat important, and I think it's fun to play. It's on PC, but nobody is online anymore. You could try to get Yas Forums to resurrect the game, but good luck.
>Vendetta
CG movie, takes place after 6.
I'll do a final post of the minor spin-offs

Been coughing for the last 2 days. Will I live to play RE3?

Resident Evil (2002) or 4. Both amazing examples of their genres, small scale horror game and AAA third person shooter blockbuster respectively.

I was looking into RE last year too. I think the most important thing you should know is the series started switching genres at RE4 into third-person shooting.

Wow, I didn't even realise how big this series is

Don't be a dumbass. Start with REmake. PS1 version is laughable and extremely easy

Do you guys know if there's any DL links for Parasite Eve? I'm on the hunt for some classic horror and it's the only one I haven't seen posted around here.

REmake 1 is a good starting point. Maybe RE4 if you want something more actiony

Exaggerating much?

>the series started switching genres at RE4 into third-person shooting.
Not exactly true. RE4 was still built on some of classic RE's foundations (stationary aim & shoot, inventory management, manual saves...). It's not like, say, Max Payne or GoW, or even the more contemporary counterparts, which is why some newbie zoomies are starting to get culture shocks when trying out even the RE4 these days.

Resident Evil was an instant, world-wide mainstream hit.
It's not some niche cult-hit like so many horror titles nowadays.
Hell, we almost got a RE-movie directed by George Romero.

Just about any ROM site still active.
It's also on PSN Store.

Just look on web archive.

Final post on spin-offs. I will not post about the shit phone games.
>BIOHAZARD 4D Executer
Gray canon 20 minute short film. In Japanese with English subs on youtube, watch after RE3.
>Prelude to the Fall
Companion two-shot manga to Umbrella Chronicles with not much new info, but it's short and harmless.
>Marhawa Desire
Canonical manga taking place before RE6, but it doesn't really say much. Available officially in English.
>Heavenly Island
Canonical manga taking place after Revelations 2, and it fucking requires that Revelations 2 knowledge. And despite being better than Marhawa, it is not officially in English, only fan translations are available.
>BIOHAZARD the Stage
Takes place a while before or after Marhawa, but definitely before 6. It's a 2 hour ride.
>Musical BIOHAZARD: The Voice of Gaia
This is a bigger ride, takes place after 6.
>The Anderson Films
Non-canonical live action films you've probably seen at least once. They are completely different from the series.
>the SD Perry novels
Non-canonical novels that contain unfinished plot threads relating to OCs, but they're a fun read if you like the games they're based on. Pic related is an exchange the author added.
>everything else
There's a bunch of chinese comics, American comics, phone games, Mercs 3D, crossover appearances, but I think I've scared you off enough already.
Keep in mind, you only need to play the games in my first post. Everything after is supplementary and non-essential.
Nah, it's far easier, has a low resolution, is still censored in parts, and Rebirth is basically unplayable on PC.
REmake 2 is fairly finished, none of the DLC felt all that essential to the core experience and what was there was worth my $60 actually it was $250 for the figure

Attached: 1490160646672.png (500x375, 279.43K)

Start with Resident Evil 2 remake. Thank me later.

No, I do not.

Get lost, faggot.

>The "Dual Shock" edition was supposed to also ship with an un-censored, full color version of the legendary live-action opening FMV, but for whatever reasons that didn't happen.
There's an Ultimate Director's Cut going around that has those added in as well as replacing the soundtrack with the original's, so no terrible basement music. Plus. some nice extras like a version of the Saturn's Battle Mode and a revamped Arrange Mode.

You say easy, but I think the PS1 version has its own charm and the more simple nature makes it approachable. Even with the fixed camera angles its easy to pick up and play.

Sounds neat.
Got a link for future archiving?

Classic RE1 is much harder than the REmake, kiddie.
And it is still a fine game. Stop being a graphics whore.

>allergies hit me
>get cough. first it was mucas. now just dry.
>and runny nose, sore throat
>been like this for 2 or 3 weeks
Im sure im fine, its just bad timing. Im still worried though.

Corona makes you cough blood and tries to drown your lungs.
Don't got either one of those nor high fever? No need to type your Will just yet.

I just saved this pic up a couple days ago. There seems to be lots of newbs jumping on RE bandwagon now, huh?

Attached: RE series play order guide - safe version.png (1440x1130, 418.15K)

>Gaiden is the last canon game in the series"
Would love to see that leap of logic

Resident Evil 1 is fucking unplayable.
Play REmake then REmake 2 then 3 then 4,etc CV is shit same for 0

>cutting out the copypasta
I worked hard on finding that info!

Attached: So, you want to play RE.png (1440x1458, 424.05K)

>Resident Evil 1 is fucking unplayable.
No, it really is not.
T: played it for the first time in 2015, alongside with rest of the series.

>Play REmake then REmake 2
No. Remake2 does not even belong to the same universe and canon anymore. And it is absolute shit.

shut the fuck up tranny

So what we're all doomed? How many make a full recovery in comparison to deaths?

Go diIate elsewhere, RetardEra alphabet monster.
Classic RE games are still absolutely amazing.

>How many make a full recovery in comparison to deaths?
It reads right on that website, that's being updated in real time.

T-thanks user

no they're not, hence why they got a remake

Relative nu-fag to RE-games here. Started with the REmake HD when it came out, having already played Silent Hill games a couple years earlier. Both are kinda distant cousins, so I decided to finally check out the "original". On hind-sight, I prolly should've started with the original RE1, but it was quite fun comparing the two in the reverse order as well.

The entire playable area of the classic RE games is a puzzle, like some classic board game that has been setup for you. The elements are the hidden items, item boxes, enemies and how your traversal forces you to juggle those options. Even the looping traversal itself has been a puzzle piece in something like REmake which has a door that breaks after X amount of uses from one side

Silent Hill has more high iq/thought provoking individual "puzzles" inside the gameworld, but they are simply that: individual pieces of interactivity in a far lousier overall shell where all gameplay elements dont form the same type of perfect whole like in RE, and almost seem redundant in some cases.

Attached: REmake Chris - Guard House - shotgun.jpg (1920x1080, 181.63K)

77k recoveries out of 81k. Is that really all that bad?

That's like saying that the Fembusters 2016 was made because the original is no longer watchable.
REmake 1 was a love-letter to old fans, from original devs, and a successful attempt to create the "definitive version" of RE1 using superior hardware than they had access to in the mid-90s. The DEmake2 is just a lazy cash-grab reboot with nothing to do with the originals, and it's ultimately much lesser of a game, with more tedious gameplay and next to no replay value.

Attached: re2_ghostb.jpg (1405x1616, 533.1K)

DS version of RE1 is the best. OP should play that.

Based.

RE 2 was a critical and commercial success. GB2016 was such a failure that Sony is pretending it never happened.

Already went over this, but I'll go into further details on its issues
>still censored aside from one scene
>HEAVILY compressed FMVs, borderline unwatchable when blown up
>shit tier resolution as it's a DS game
>RE4 knife trivializes the challenge in a knife only run
>the knife also trivializes inventory management as now you always have a weapon
>no Arranged Mode or Battle Game, instead there is an unusable multiplayer mode and rebirth mode (which relies entirely on DS gimmicks)

>fellow fans say Wesker has cat eyes all these years
>RE5 not only slaps him a textured attire that makes him look scaly, but his own new virus is called "Uroboros", which he ends up infecting himself with in the climax
I really should've figured it out sooner when he was literally brought back to life in CV while accompanied by Hunters of all things.

Maybe you should start with resident evil 1

>RE 2 was a critical and commercial success.
So was The Last Of Us, MGS5, Fort Nite and Angry Birds.
Just because it's popular does not make it "good". And replacing your entire fanbase with more gullible folks with lowest standards possible is just a dick move, especially when it was the HD port of REmake, the absolute 10/10 peak of the classic REs, that "saved" the studio and IP.

Not him, but, you call other people gullible, but you're a fucking secondary that hopped on the shit remaster of a game that is honestly not even the best classic RE, I would say at least 3 others are just as good, if not better.

Obviously DS is best played on a real handheld, but its resolution isn't that much lower than the US PS1's 224p.
The "knife only" runs certainly aren't something a rookie should worry about. Hell, I've been playing REs for 25 years soon, and I still don't want to even try that jazz.

>the knife also trivializes inventory management as now you always have a weapon
I never carried Knife in any of the pre-RE4 games, and I still had a weapon on me at all times. Crazy, huh?

Attached: Resident Evil Deadly Silence.png (768x1152, 141.63K)

What is the best emulator for these?

>Obviously DS is best played on a real handheld, but its resolution isn't that much lower than the US PS1's 224p.
They still compressed the fuck out of backgrounds, as shown in your image, and they don't have the updated BGs of Arranged Mode, meaning it's using the worst version of them
>The "knife only" runs certainly aren't something a rookie should worry about. Hell, I've been playing REs for 25 years soon, and I still don't want to even try that jazz.
The knife in DS trivializes combat in general, because it's too fast and it's too fucking easy.
>I never carried Knife in any of the pre-RE4 games, and I still had a weapon on me at all times. Crazy, huh?
You desperately require reading comprehension skills.
Tell me, does the knife in DS appear in your inventory? No? Then it's trivializing the inventory management aspect of the game.

Release order is best.

"Classic Era"
>RE1
>RE2
>RE3
>RECV
>REmake (it's tempting to do this instead of RE1, but you get a lot more out of it if you've played RE1 first)
>RE0

"Action Era"
>RE4
>RE5
>Revelations (optional)
>RE6
>Revelations 2 (the real sequel to RE5, and my persona favorite from this era after 4)

"Modern Era"
>RE7
>REmake 2

>you're a fucking secondary that hopped on the shit remaster of a game that is honestly not even the best classic RE
Sorry kid, but I started with 1996 RE1, mere weeks before RE2 dropped. Still got my OG copy.
I got GC for the REmake and Zero alone, and yes - REmake is a pure GOAT and peak of its own genre.

Attached: little horror collection of mine.jpg (3084x1190, 1.19M)

>I started with RE1, and then switched consoles completely for 2 and never got 3
I highly doubt you, and the way you post in general comes off as one of those post-2015 newfaggots, like Beccafag, Clairefag, the numerous Vothfags who should neck themselves, etc.

Will you fucking talk about games you actually enjoy, retard? The classic games are great. So is RE2 2019. Idiots like you are fucking cancer who like bitching about RE games more than playing them.

The SOURCE NEXT ones are the Japanese PC ports, so no emus needed. Just the patches.
For GC games, Dolphin is the only option.
PS1 has plethora of emulators to choose from. I tend to use the good ol' ePSXe most of the time, as it's lightweight and just werks. If I want more graphical bling-bling, the PCSX-R fork with PGXP hacks (= reduced poly & texture jiggling) is the way to go.

Of course you can just use the Software renderer in both for that sweet, unfiltered 240p PS1 aesthetic.
There's also simpler emus for that though, like the PSXfin, that's legit just drag & drop.

Attached: all dem PCSX-R Settings 4noobs.png (1797x653, 377.47K)

that's not a day one release,brit nigger

>Will you fucking talk about games you actually enjoy, retard?
Certainly. I do that all the time.
Does not stop me from informing others that the DEmake2 is not worth the cock-sucking you zoomies praise to heavens like all your flavor-of-month shit.

>Idiots like you are fucking cancer who like bitching about RE games more than playing them.
Bitch please, I have played each and every one of the pre-7th gen RE games dozens of times each. I bet my playthrough count of classic RE2 is around 40+ by now.
DEmake2, I don't want to even touch any more. Did the fuckers courtesy of playing both A & B campaigns on Hard only, plus a single run of Hunk, and now I'm done with it. Glad I didn't waste a penny on this shit.
