They're all the same story, told differently with gameplay differences, yes.
DW7 has the best story presentation, and adds an entirely new faction from the previous games.
DW8 sucks don't bother
DW9 is open world and really divisive. It's easily the most different game in the series. I liked it, but everyone else seems to hate it.

Samurai Warriors 4 is also worth a look. Same thing as DW, but in Japan.
Dynasty and Samurai Warriors cross over in Warriors Orochi, and WO3 Ultimate and WO4 are absolutely great games.
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 is also great if you like One Piece
