bro i think the image you uploaded is corrupted.
Nothing
ASCII graphics
Im not autistic enough to power through the initial learning phase to play it.
Wtf, is this real? Why did I never learn about this at school?
Its what the government doesn't want you to know. Flat earthers only touch on part of the truth.
Also i find your response more believable than the fact that anyone actually enjoys playing Dwarf Fortress over shitposting about it.
It's both information overload, combined with an inability to parse that information because ascii. The information itself is not that complicated, but it comes at you in a way that's hard to process. Tile sets can help, but there's not much that can be done for the UI other than to bypass it with third party hacks like Dwarf The Rapist. But while all that makes it easier, it also adds an extra layer to the learning curve because at some point you have to learn those things exist.
So to answer your question: DF isn't complicated but learning it is a clusterfuck and many people (rightly) don't wanna deal with that.
If a game requires going through a wiki nearly every time you want to do something I think it's fair to call it complicated
There's a billion keybinds that lead into a billion menus, the UI is unappealing to casuals, and the lack of guide in-game makes multiple screens or constant alt-tabbing required to learn.
