You know what they call it when you answer your own question?
I'm sure there is more to add
Before the game came out, I was interested in the idea of the game being more about exploration. I wasn't expecting Blood Omen or Zelda or anything, but I thought it was a decent way of shaking things up and regardless of how it related to the old God of War games it had my interest. But most of that is just fluff, and the rest doesn't hold together all that well. Even the story feels like a clumsy prologue more than anything else.
I was pleasantly surprised by how tasteful the references to the older games were, though. Retrieving the Blades was one of the strongest story moments across the series.
>retrieving the blades
I'll agree on that. Kino moment
>What went wrong?
It was released to a console you don't know.
>zero memorable boss fights
Stepdad of War has literally the only good boss fight in the entire series.
The boss fights were so unengaging. The Valkyries were the only ones to get my blood pumping and it got boring fighting them after awhile. The Queen should've been the only true Valkyrie boss imo.
They learned nothing after going the wrong direction in Ascension
Funny how Yas Forumstards suddenly love the old GOW games.
its a solid 7-8/10 and clearly a huge upgrade over the older games that had a mumbling retard kratos with a babby mode button mashing based gameplay. The older games were shit compared to competent action titles like NG and DMC.
Nu-GOW atleast has a likable kratos and a combat system that isn't babby mode dmc. Its crunchy, impactful and the axe is fun to fuck around with. Baldur, valkyries, magni and modi are also pretty fun bosses. Its obviously not on the combat level of something like DMC5 but it was a fun game.
Yas Forumstards will pretend to like it so they can btfo the nu gow
>hunt down treasures in all corners of map
>eventually realize how little there worth
I mean gee, thanks for the sparkly buffalo ass sprinkles that can be used to improve axe handles that apply a lightning effect, but I wasnt really using that handle
(you)
the axe is arguably the only redeeming factor in the game
>magni and modi
>good boss fight
It was lame
I've always loved the old GoW games even with the DMC and Bayonetta fan bants over the years. They're fun power fantasy games where you get to kill Greek monsters and fuck girls.
>God of War is in a norse setting
>Anticipate beating up Thor for the entire game
>Thor is a secret cutscene
Maybe I'm a sucker for Norse mythos so the setting wasn't lame to me at all. But user, Baldur makes perfect sense as the main antagonist, did you really expect to fight Odin or Thor in the first game?
I always liked them. The combat in the older games wasn't as strong as DMC's, but their overall priorities (even with combat) were different from what DMC did. There's nothing I can think of that GoW4 really does better than the older games. Some of it is on par and a lateral shift, but I think plenty of other aspects are outright downgrades insofar as they're comparable.
Better than most fights in gow3
>13 million copies sold by now
>Amazing detailed graphics
>Enjoyable story
>Great banter between Kratos, Son and head
>Game is actually very masculine and redpilled
>Intricate and sophisticated metroidvania designed world
>Accessible but deep combat
>Hard as fuck as Dark Souls
>Gorgeous Nordic inspired style ost
>No DLC or season pass or locked costumes behind toys bullshit like Zelda: Breath of the Wild
>Second fastest selling PlayStation exclusive of all time
>Game of the Fucking year, and has won more GOTY than Breath of the Wild
No idea why Yas Forums cope so hard
Give me God of War difficult mode is probably more difficult than Dark Souls 1
I have yet to see a non-buzzword criticism of this game from Yas Forums. Its either “its a movie” or “onions”
>Hard as dark souls
It's really not
Giving an enemy a bigger number that let's it one shot you and have 7 hp pieces is not good game design in any way
It's not hard, it just takes longer
>the axe is crunchy, impactful
Wow, guess how I know you played on normal difficulty
Yes, I did, but I see that it was pretty dumb in retrospect
>zero memorable boss fights
The Stranger, Magni & Modi, and the Valkyries.
>troll fight over and over again
>princess is in another castle syndrome
True.
>"Let's make a God of War game that feels more like the Last of Us so critics give us 10/10"
It's nothing like The Last of Us, that's a meme complaint. The shift from PS2 GoW to PS4 GoW is more like the shift from classic Resident Evil to RE4.
>"God of War has matured and grown up, 10/10"
I know this is one of those conversations where everyone has a different understanding of what words mean, but it's hard to argue that the characterization in the new God of War isn't more nuanced.
>ATROCIOUS difficulty scaling
Give Me God of War is masochistic at the start but gets more reasonable later, ends up being the best way to play the game to actually appreciate the mechanics.
>God of war
>can punch a guy through a mountain
>gets BTFO in three hits by draugr
Gameplay and story segregation exists in practically every game, prior God of War entries included.
>enemies have levels
I agree the RPG elements could use some work. What's actually annoying about levels is that they determine whether you can stagger/parry/block enemies. I hope/expect the next game will tweak it significantly.
>God of War is in a norse setting
>Anticipate beating up Thor for the entire game
>Thor is a secret cutscene
It's a goddamn trilogy. You only fought one Greek god in the first God of War (Ares). Obviously they're not gonna have Kratos kill off the most popular Norse god from the get-go.
>hard = having to whack away at a single enemy for 5 minutes
>thank you for not locking content behind paywalls
>sales and GOTY awards mean something
You forgot to mention critic reviews
The Valkyrie Queen has a more elaborate moveset than any Souls boss.
>zero memorable boss fights
Literally the first boss fight, it implemented a balanced cinematic/gameplay combination.
>troll fight over and over again
>princess is in another castle syndrome
>ATROCIOUS difficulty scaling
Fair.
>The rest
just make you seem like a retard
There was a GoW discussion like this yesterday and the ones preceding it are all the same. Electionfags and other anons don't discuss or even play these games just regurgitate buzzwords like parrots endlessly.
Both Baldur fights were good. That's it. I disagree on the others.
It's literally the Last of Us. The camera is the subtle clue here.
The point is not gameplay and story segregation but the terrible difficulty.
>"SOMETHING'S BREAKING THROUGH THE WALL!"
The next game's main bosses will be Freya, who regains her Valkyrie wings/status from her brother Freyr who rally the Elves in Alfheim against Atreus. Thor shows up as the final boss. Odin tease at the end.
The corpse Eagle in Helheim will also be a boss & Fenrir will show up.
Based, eloquently and rationally put.
Believable, but I can't help but think they'll hold off on killing Thor until the last game of the trilogy. He's the one Norse god everyone knows and cares about, especially within an action context. Odin is frankly small-time in comparison.
>Graphics - 9/10
>Sound - 9/10
>Story - 7/10
>Gameplay - 5/10
Game is solid 7/10, but story and gameplay can be better.
>It's literally the Last of Us.

>You MUST GO TO THE GATES OF HELL AND KILL THE WATCHER OF THE GATES OF HELL
"Oh shit this is going to be awesome"
>It's the troll boss again
I fucking laughed actually.
why can From churn out 20+ bosses a game with a fast release cycle but these guys can only manage like 8 types in 5 years?
You don't know what literally means.
>the camera is the subtle clue here
Again, that's RE4. Even has a dedicated quick turn button. Hell I would compare it to God Hand as well, they're both over-the-shoulder melee-focused games with launchers but no jumping, with powerful special attacks that have to be used strategically. Though there's obviously a lot of differences.
80% of time spent on console optimization and thoughts about profit, smart ads, and marketing.
>>Gameplay - 5/10
Can I get an actual non-brainlet explanation for this? I thought it was decent at best and okay at worst, but would love to hear someone describe it without using memewords
really enjoyed it. Boss variety was undeniably weak but not a big deal for me. The base gameplay is fun, the dialogue and plot rarely interrupts gameplay. The combat itself is fun with satisfying sound design and good animations, lots of tools to beat up all the enemies
why does Yas Forums have to pretend it's like total dogshit?
The point is that the camera is garbage and the game is boring. I want to be fighting and tearing my way through epic bosses. Fuck GOW 2018.
Almost every game they've made since Demon's Souls has been iterating on the same framework and systems. Not a bad thing in my opinion, but it's easier to pump out content when you're not working from scratch.
it sucks that the series isnt what you want anymore, but i'll say i found le epic nonstop action of old gow to be boring as fuck and like their new direction
Cronos was basically a setpiece though.
It was a great game
>Hell I would compare it to God Hand as well
That's pretty obviously a case of convergent evolution more than anything else. God of War arrived at its camera for very different reasons than God Hand did. I'd be willing to bet that Last of Us was far more of an influence on God of War than God Hand, though obviously both owe something to RE4.
It was a great movie.
>it sucks that the series isnt what you want anymore, but i'll say i found le epic nonstop action of old gow to be boring as fuck and like their new direction
I agree with that
cringe metroidvania slasher with ordinary mechanics gameplay
But the old God of War games also had better and more meaningful level design with respect to platforming and puzzles, too, which is one of the biggest reasons I consider the new game to be such a downgrade. You can have slower paced moments that aren't boring fluff, but GoW4 forgot how to do it.
>Athena shows up to shit talk Kratos and leaves
What’s her endgame here
Also why the fuck is Zeus in Norse hell
They decided to make a cinematic Naughty Dog game over the action adventure that it used to be.
>"Let's make a God of War game that feels more like the Last of Us so critics give us 10/10"
That's literally what they did and it's a fucking shame.
based
>What’s her endgame here
I assumed it was just a vision, but there's no real difference between how she appears in the new game from how she appeared in God of War III, so who the fuck knows. Maybe she really is still kicking around as a Force Ghost.
>ATROCIOUS difficulty scaling
You know you can upgrade Atrocious too, right? Not just Kratos. Buy him gear and upgrade his arrows. He gets much easier to handle as the game progresses if you do that.
Dont forget audiologs
Nice one.
Any game where you have a child companion ends up sucking because of it.
>not even ragdoll physics in 2019
Why the fuck are Sony so lazy?
>What went wrong?
Metroidvania a fucking cheapest game design ever, reusing of locations, fucking hate those type of games.
>sony has over 100m units sold, probably around 70ish million sold when GoW launched
>12million copies sold
>nintendo has a 22million seller with 50m units sold
Why don't sonytrannies buy games? Especially your """Exculsive (tm)""" games you bitch about so much? GoW on PC when?
Grabs got memed, bad camera, poor variety of mobs/bosses, no aerial combat, lots of minor stuff left out like collision damage, the rpg stuff isn't done well like Souls and shits on no upgrade runs thanks to chip damage and no stagger, less variety on weapons/tools, cooldowns based skills on NuGoW being worse than meter based ones on old GoW, etc.
Might've forgot something, I'm sure real GoW vets will cover if I did.
