Remember that ICONS of gaming get to be fighters in Smash brothers. If Banjo-Kazooie as characters and series as a whole aren't iconic, then why are they in Smash? They clearly made such a massive impact on the fans, Nintendo, and Microsoft to be given such considerations to join Smash despite not having a game in a decade. Literally every other 3rd-Party has kept their previous additions in the base-roster when a new game released and then just added new picks on top of that. They won’t just pull Banjo from the negotiating table but then come back later to ask for Chief. Banjo is already a finished product, far easier to simply port and then, add Chief/Steve on top of it.

Does it matter? Those are the two biggest Microsoft IPs left to add. If Microsoft decides to stay on board for a new Smash, it will be one or both of those characters most likely added.
