If this is "one of the best" I'm assuming the quality of these games aren't very good then?

Kinda. You have to be really in to very anime JRPG's to like Tales games.
>I'm assuming the quality of these games aren't very good then?
Correct.
> I'm assuming the quality of these games aren't very good then?
nope, symphonia/abyss/vesperia are genuinely the only games in this franchise worth playing, and all three feel like they have the parts of the best jrpg spread between them meaning every game feels very deficient in one area or another, for example vesperias absolutely horrible dungeons which are just hallways you fight enemies in using the fun combat broken up by busywork
Why does no one ever make proper Tales threads anymore that aren't just circlejerks over how the whole series is shit except for 2 games?
They're all fairly mediocre, some are worse than others. i like them
>same image everytime
one retard that just keep shiting on vesperia for some reason
> for some reason
people unironically get filtered by the idea that the combat can actually be difficult in a jrpg, especially since the game tends to be advertised using the late game combo video shit that the enemies can't actually do much about
I've seen lots of people complain about the birds in particular
Is this cope? I am literally playing the game for the first time.
Use a screenshot from the game instead of a generic pic of the boxart if you want to seem genuine and not like you just feel like shitting on Tales for the sake of it
Before the Definitive Edition was released everyone here said that this game was one of the best, if not the best.
After being released everyone seems to agree that this game is dull and maybe a 6/10 or 7/10. And also that the last part of the game is boring.
What happened?
I have played 4 Tales until now and I wanted to give it a try to this one but I guess it's better not to waste time with it.
Is Hearts R decent? I got a pirated vita and I want to know if it is worth or not.
>What happened?
games that came out after this one got released in english so a lot of the tales fans coming into this game were mad that it wasn't like berseria (linear hallways vs missable sidequests in a game with encouraged NG+, flashy button mash combat from the start with invincible cutscene attacks vs having to manual cancel for half the game to do anything and getting hit out or burst arte by a knife/bird in the back).
the general hype of "holy shit they finally put ps3vesperia in english" also just got a lot of people who aren't into these kind of games in the first place to check it out.
vesperia is still without a doubt one of the best tales games, it's just also not a game for everyone in the entire world
Funny you all say that yet drool all over Ys VIII.
I actually spent money on it cause people like it. It's classic weebshit with shallow combat.
And characters move like asses.
I like both games
What are you trying to accomplish with posts like this
keep going shitlord. you've barely passed the tutorial phase of the game. not to mention ng+ and the grade shop is essential for the true experience this game has to offer
I can't manual cancel for shit. Just faceroll on semi auto and win. Its a pretty okay game, wish it would end now though, just keeps going and going.
I'm genuinely wondering how a lot of people absolutely love Ys VIII here, I have seen maybe less than 10 people say something bad about it.
Made me buy the game and it turned out to be just dumb weebshit. In case of characters for example. Laxativia is a truly the one of the more annoying characters I've had the chance playing with. Classic dumb anime tsundere archtype, I thought I moved on from that.
Ys Origins was good tho, my first and only other Ys game I've played.
HOLY FUCK YES. FUCK. Based desu. I beat XC2 and asked Yas Forums for a good JRPG to play similar to it and was suggest ys Viii. FUCK THIS FUCKING GAME. it was WORSE IN EVERY way besides the combat.
Music
Characters
Story
Atmosphere
Quests
EVERYTHING was worse than XC2 besides the combat. I am STILL mad I paid for this fucking game.
One guy actually agrees. I think that's it for this thread.
this is me I don't think any game has ever insulted me on such a personal level as much as YS VIII did. I literally never take the opinion of this board seriously anymore.
because people woke up
because other games have come out that really showcase how bad of a series this is.
they always come back,don't worry
how deep is the combat system
it's the only aspect i'm interested in
It’s really boring
it could be super deep due to equipment abilities, fatal strikes, overlimits, etc. but I’ll never know because the entire game is a fucking slog.
OP here. I thought you were all going to screech and call me retarded. Seems like most of you agree. Why is this series even still a thing if everyone hates it?
apparently arise is going to be a "le reboot" to the franchise
with the god eater director no doubt
It does start out slow, maybe the slowest in Tales series.
I, too, wish I had known that before playing but it's still probably 1st ranked due it's consistency in all the elements.
You're a faggot for not listing Eternia as worth playing. Also
>for example vesperias absolutely horrible dungeons
The absolute irony of saying that in the same post as mentioning symphonia when that game is THAT LEVEL: THE GAME.
>Meltokio Sewers
>Earth Temple
>Lightning Temple
>Ice Temple
>Darkness Temple
>Latheon Gorge
>Ymir Forest
>Welgaia
>best
Don't ever listen to that with Tales
It is a series very guilty of the old "each installment does things right and wrong"
Most of Vesperia's praise is that the character party is generally not a token cast of shitlords who all moralfag, specifically Yuri is a pretty good protag by JRPG standards as he is very much on his own code.
Even then there's some serious flaws in that, so
>as as he is very much on his own code.
It's just a less edgy Punisher
>maybe the slowest in Tales series.
No that's definitely Phantasia/PS1 Destiny
What does Destiny PS2 do wrong?
Ys is for fucking retards, dude. You got tricked. They're the most basic fucking games ever made. Even Tales has more depth.
ALRIGHT FUCKERS

The worst part of this game were the antagonists.
First the game bait you with Alexei. he seems pretty generic and devoid of charisma, but with a bit more of development, motivations and more scenes of him fucking shit up he might work. But then he dies and that guy Duke "replaces" him. And i use curly braces because the point where he should be presented as an antagonist is not clear at all, he is such a passive reactive character that does nothing but spout emo "durr i hate humans" stuff for 90% of the game and suddenly he is the main antagonist. And the game tries to act as if it is some serious shit, but i can't believe that because Duke has no impact to the plot at all. It's as if he was added at the last minute during development. Alexei was a generic moustache twirling villain, but at least his actions impacted the plot, all the bad stuff that happened to the world was because of him. He should have been the main villain. Or if the developers didn't wanted to use him then they should have used the Adephagos itself. Or both if they were creative
The vast majority of them are not good, Vesperia is one of the passable ones.
don't even bother
Tales of Legendia
Norma is my favourite tales girl; specific party member, Genis is solid.

Yes
>puzzles literal 12 year old children can solve? fuck this game, I'd much prefer empty hallways with nothing in them
So what happened to Baba after he apparently fucked up his new job at SE?
I played it almost all the way through before dropping it out of boredom. The story wasn't interesting and the combat was ass
The problem is they're shitty puzzles that take forever to do. It's not that the puzzles are hard, they're pretty obvious. They exist only to massively slow the game down. There's a reason once someone does Meltokio Sewers, the game is merciful enough to give a teleporter to skip it. Because no sane person would ever want to go back there.
And if we're talking just hallways, Graces is far more guilty about this because they're not only hallways, they're absurdly long hallways.
>how deep is the combat system
one of the games primary mechanics is the ability to cancel the (pretty lengthy at times) recovery of almost any attack into a quick forward dash, which you then generally want to cancel into a block so you can act out of it quickly.
the combo system has a lot of nuance to it because while you have elaborate combos and OTG's and ways moves cancel into other moves, you also have groups of enemies who deliberately move around to hit you from the sides or back so that you need to often play a more crowd control game of short combos or big pushback/knockdown hits, or rely a lot on your teamates (the AI can be kinda awkward but there's a lot of room for tweaking it, and after you get a certain item you can swap to any party member mid fight, or just use a second controller)
the bosses in particular can be pretty rough, as on the harder modes where you cant just faceroll and win by having better numbers you need to take into account boss specific gimmicks, making the most of the limit you have on combos before the boss breaks out, nuances like then staggering for longer if you hit them from behind and the like. combine this with 8 playable characters who all have pretty solid niches (although some are definitely more solid than others, such as the character who's an absolute beast at midair combos in a game where nobody else really is and a bunch of enemies can't be juggled)
TLDR: it hits a pretty great sweetspot between combat depth while having enough restrictions (in terms of both your access to that depth and the abilities of the boss) that it doesn't just become a punching bag combo video simulator
>GEE IT SURE WOULD BE NICE IF COLETTE COULD JUST FLY OVER AND GRAB THAT FRUIT, OR WE JUST USED A STICK OR SOMETHING TO GET IT OVER HERE. INSTEAD LET'S DO A GIANT SEQUENCE OF HAVING LITTLE FISH MOVE IT THROUGH A STAGE.

You mean like tales of vesperia, the game that makes you hit gears in ghasfarost, watch a cutscene showing a fence extending so you can then hit the gear behind the fence you opened? where it literally makes you hit gears so a bridge right next to you can extend one foot so you can hit the actually important gear?
the puzzles in symphonia are pretty in love with making you do laps of the dungeon, but it's light years better than the shameless padding or "box rooms broken up by hallways with nothing in them but monsters and treasure chests" design of vesperia. it's not that it's especially awesome gameplay design if you aren't 12 years old and find those puzzles mentally challenging, it's just much better than vesperias 3/10 dungeon design.
>There's a reason once someone does Meltokio Sewers, the game is merciful enough to give a teleporter to skip it.
Because you already know the solution, why are you being so strange?
if you're going to be this autistic you should realize that symphonias plot has a lot more situations that could be resolved if colette remembered she could fly than one of the more interesting puzzles in the game (because it doesn't just require "use sorcerer ring on the designated thing and push blocks")
You mean the ONE dungeon that did that and not nearly a dozen like Symphonia?
>one of the more interesting puzzles in the game
Not him but fuck off, it's a waste of my time when I want to get back to combat.
>You're a faggot for not listing Eternia as worth playing.
all the 2d tales games are unplayable cutscene spamfests. becoming 3D was the best thing that ever happened to this series because it gives a bit of nuance when your attacks can miss due to the z axis, instead of locking down half the screen with any given attack
This game single handedly put me off the entire franchise. I thought I was going to be in for some great shit after all the buzz but after eight hours I was tapped out and sold it on ebay.
>all the 2d tales games are unplayable cutscene spamfests.
Eternia literally only does that with extremely specific moves (mostly Fog's attacks) because nothing else pauses the combat. Hell the only game in the series that explicitly locks everything down into a cutscene when you use spells is Phantasia.
Lol even the Ys seethe admits the combat isn’t all that bad.
I mean, the series builds on just letting you hit things with a sword (and other implements) with absolutely minimal boilerplate to distract you from hitting things.
To me “real” turn based JRPGs are largely just yawnfests full of unengaging gameplay systems autism and a waterfall of anime plot exposition.
I just want to hit things with a sword.
Did you get Flynn and judith yet? After that, the game became fucking awesome. It's very slow to start. It's my favorite. This and Graces F. Symphonia's combat is too archaic. Tried abyss on 3DS and it wasn't great. I started the new one and it's solid so far.
What the fuck happened to these threads?
it doesn't need to pause the combat in order to be a cutscene if I press one button and then watch as a spell or a multi hitting attack covers the screen in damaging hitboxes and ganks the enemies for me

Eternia was the perfection of LMBS. If anything Destiny 2 and Rebirth were a step back from it since they took so much emphasis away from actually blocking attacks and just rushing in to spam moves.
>tidal wave
chad symphonia feeling of adventure game design
>block wind fans while dodging spike traps so you can bring a torch to ancient writings, then use those writings as clues for the order you need to activate switches in order to progress or get treasure
>hunt down these enemies so you can get someone to make you special gloves in order to get the magic ice flower which you can then use to freeze a lake and cross it (after figuring out the right directions to side around and cross the ice)
>navigate through a multi story tower over and over so you can break a series of blocks that need different types of electricty and set up lightning rods at different times to power machines while avoiding it hitting something on a higher elevation and causing you issues, while also making sure to avoid falling down a cliff in rooms too dark to see easily outside of the odd lightning strike
virgin "rushed to release because microsoft wanted a jrpg to sell the 360 out this fiscal year" vesperia design
>uhh it's a series of hallways just narrow enough to make avoiding the monsters we place along the path pretty much impossible
>sometimes you shoot the sorcerers ring
>then you fight a boss and cheese it with overlimit
doesn't hit flying enemies, the multiple hits make it bad against bosses, is a late game spell & it got nerfed in the re-release anyway
I just want to fight monsters though, especially when I'm playing multiplayer with my friends and we don't want to be wasting time with a giant puzzle. Do you know how bad the multiplayer experience gets when you have to go to a town and everyone is just sitting there waiting for player 1 to finish shit?
>not abyss
>zelos
>karma and its remixes throughout the game
Where is my arise news? Reeee
who the fuck would sit there and play a 90 hour jrpg as a multiplayer experience, that shit was just a gimmick because symphonia is a gamecube game and "four player multiplayer" was the consoles only real selling point over the ps2 & the later tales games kept it just for the novelty of it & because people used it to make cool combo videos
I did... like 30+ times with my best friend.
>who the fuck would sit there and play a 90 hour jrpg as a multiplayer experience
It's been a selling point for the series since what, Destiny? Hell that's one of the reasons people hate Legendia, THEY TOOK AWAY THE ABILITY TO PLAY WITH YOUR FRIENDS
legendia sucks ass anyway, if you played that game with your friends they would stop being friends with you, devs did you a favor
>I'm assuming the quality of these games aren't very good then?
Correct. These games are the equivalent of seasonal shounen anime that are purely for weirdos that call themselves "fans".
Who knows, maybe the combat would be more satisfying if the characters could combo their moves together.
>symphonia
That games has the most insultingly bad writing i've ever seen in over 20 years of playing JRPG's. You people are either insane or you played it when you were 9 and haven't played it since then as an adult.
>legendia sucks
oh that was uncalled for.
there's better reasons to hate Legendia, but lack of multiplayer was an insane choice.
I fell for this meme. It's a mediocre tales game. It's a dull game in general.
I went through the entire of Symphonia both by myself and with my best friend. By far the better experience was playing with him and it wasn't just because it was "with friends" but because the combat is so much better when it's not an AI playing as one of your partners. You'd be amazed how much better the combat gets with another person.
Eh, said this in a past thread, I'll say it again. I feel like the series went full anime by the time of Graces, the ones before don't exactly give me that impression.
Legendia kun how are you?
Tales games aren't very good. I still like them. It's my guilty pleasure, I guess.
tales of legendia, the game where a party member takes you on a multi-hour detour to sneak past an enemy guard you could've probably just taken out, and the detour puts you literally 5 feet past the guard & the whole thing is played as a joke as if you didn't just waste your time
tales of legendia, the game with a romance story so awkward and badly written every time the characters show up in crossover games they just pretend that didnt happen and pair senel with someone else instead
tales of legendia, the game where half the fucking game isn't even voiced in the english release
>the ones before don't exactly give me that impression.
Because you didn't watch enough 90s anime that they were trying to be like instead. This franchise has always been about like playing through an anime season.
You are right. And yes I have played every tales game.
Though Tales of Destiny DC is 10/10.
