One thing that stuck with me was "The Grinder". The game does not fuck around and throws a heavy metal soundtrack right at your face without warning. For a 12 year old me it was the coolest shit in the world.

I think it's likely he hated being a "puppet"and wanted to put the soviet union back on top, but Yuri manipulated him subtly to grow this desire until a full scale invasion was launched.
Then as the campaign progresses, Yuri starts using more overt and will breaking mind-control to get specif things he wants, which is what you see in the cut scenes and is why Alex is physically drained/sick, unlike earlier when he seems healthy and cherry.
At least, that makes sense to me, since it seems like the President and Alex were at least cordial and the US is genuinely surprised by the Russians, meaning their intelligence initially never thought Alex/the Soviet government would do something so drastic, and when things begin to change to where they might have seen an invasion coming, that's Yuri (which likely means all the US intelligence was completely useless now because good luck fighting against psi fuckery counter-espionage.)
