I consider Fortnite to be the game that started it all, everything before it was like pre-history or pre-alpha in geekspeak ;^)

well, in the context of 'fuck you dad just let me play destiny' it kind of is. though i guess even then it'd be marathon

HOLY FUCKING SHIT DOOMTARDS GOT BTFO

Poshel nahui dolboeb

Duke Nukem when the world needed you the most you failed us, why did you allow this to happen?

You implied it.

Bunch of angry hipsters

Halo isn't a great game. But just like how Super Mario 64 isn't actually a very good 3d platformer, it did a lot of stuff that was significant to defining the genre. Halo was one of the first two stick console action shooters to do shit right, and its influence can't be denied. Doesn't matter if you like the game or not.

this

i hate being old.

guess it's time to eat a bullet then, gramps

Are you guys over 30 or something?
Halo is 19 years old...

Lmao, gaylo sux. Go play doom or quake.

The first half of 64 is great. Everything from the 30-star door onwards can eat a bullet though, there's like three good levels and one is the Bowser stage

>But just like how Super Mario 64 isn't actually a very good 3d platformer
Nintendies pretend it hasn't aged like milk and been obliterated by Odyssey.

BASED and youtubepilled

Its not a bad game. Its just clunky and hasn't aged well. Like most things that did something new and did it well, it is comparably inferior to many of the games that came after, even if it laid the groundwork. And no amount of nostalgia or gnashing of teeth can change that.

It's like people putting the Game Boy version of Tetris, or Super Mario Bros 1, or Final Fantasy VII or Ocarina of Time etc etc on the top spot of their Top 10 Games of All Time lists, prioritising the historical and cultural value over how it stands. Which is fair in its own way but can give a false impression of how it still stands in a world influenced by its existence

There's nothing clunky about it. Mario moves exactly as desired. The camera can be a fight sometimes. But nothing that a skilled player can't compensate for by handling the sticks with precision.

The first Super Mario Bros is still really fun to run through in one sitting, though.

>Which is fair in its own way but can give a false impression of how it still stands in a world influenced by its existence
Mario 64 is still the most popular 3D Mario game. This is measurable through twitch. If you check the 3D Mario games, Galaxy 1 has 115K followers. Galaxy 2, 3D Land, and 3D World, only have tens of thousands of followers. These are pathetic numbers, when you consider how many Wiis and 3DSs were sold. Mario Galaxy should have way more numbers. If what you claim is true, and it's measurably better in every way.

Because Mario 64 has 1.3 MILLION followers. That is 13x greater than Galaxy. And just shits all over the other games.

Odyssey has an astounding 1.3 million followers as well. But this is in part due to the fact that Twitch has grown a lot over the years. And so now when you get big releases in current year, everyone follows it on twitch. But that doesn't mean Odyssey has equal viewers. It's just the hype train causing people to follow the new thing while it's hot, before dying off.

The fact that Mario 64 is so huge without any of the newness hype, goes to show how much it's still appreciated to this day.

This.

Camera is trash but I agree that saying SM64 isn't a very good 3d platformer is an overstatement of that issue, it's really good on the whole.

youtu.be/gzUKzSs6nZ0

Judging a game by twitch viewers is pretty dumb without mentioning speedrunner autists, which is probably 95% of people who follow that game on twitch. A game can be beloved without having a cadre of pants-shitting robots ramming mario's ass backwards up a staircase for twitch subs and their underlings to inflate view counts.

>Because Mario 64 has 1.3 MILLION followers. That is 13x greater than Galaxy. And just shits all over the other games.
>Odyssey has an astounding 1.3 million followers as well. But this is in part due to the fact that Twitch has grown a lot over the years. The first line is you going "bigger numbers = better quality", which can be argued as making an argument for correlation implying causation, but whatever. Then the second line is you going 'well this game has the same big numbers but it doesn't count because' and then twisting yourself in a pretzel knot to justify it. You're not even taking into account factors like N64 emulation, speedrunning for 64 and Odyssey, mods for both games etc. Too much isn't being taken into consideration.
It's not a game-breaker but Mario does have this seemingly random complication where he'll switch between 'press down on the stick and he'll do a 180 on the spot to walk towards the camera' and 'press down on the stick and he'll steer like a fat donut to face the right direction' and it can fuck you over on a surprising number of platforms. That's only really half my gripe with 64, the bigger issue is just half the game feels like a chore to work through. Anyone who says Tall Tall Mountain or Tiny Huge Island or Wet Dry World is their LOTY needs to take a 12-step program off a 10-step pier

>;^)
Fuuuuuaaaarrrrk that takes me back to 2016

fuuuaaarrkkk my heart

Well if the newer games felt as good as Mario 64, then it would get more runners, and thus greater exposure. But not as many people want to trudge through the other games.

>which can be argued as making an argument for correlation implying causation
My first line is "better quality = bigger numbers." You got it backwards. The quality of the game, causes numbers to grow.

>Then the second line is you going 'well this game has the same big numbers but it doesn't count because' and then twisting yourself in a pretzel knot to justify it
Putting things into context is not a pretzel knot. It's simply understanding that two games existed in two different times, and so the circumstances of their growth in followers were different. I merely stated in what way their growth was different.

>You're not even taking into account factors like N64 emulation
What about it?

>speedrunning for 64 and Odyssey
Odyssey has a speedrunning community all it's own. With 1813 players on it's most popular category: speedrun.com/smo
Mario 64's most popular category only has 829 players:speedrun.com/sm64#0_Star
The demonstrates two thing. 1, again, the newness made players flock to Odyssey. This is in part thanks to the growth of the speedrunning scene. And 2, that 3D Mario games other than Mario 64 are capable of garnering interest. Interest that the other Mario 64 games failed to capture. What makes Odyssey different than the other ones? Well I'd say that it is the game that is closest to Mario 64 in design. Even Nintendo claims this to be the case. See pick related.

>he'll switch between 'press down on the stick and he'll do a 180 on the spot to walk towards the camera' and 'press down on the stick and he'll steer like a fat donut to face the right direction'
That sounds like you're being clumsy on the sticks and blaming Mario. It's not "pull down" that causes Mario to do a 180. It's "pull opposite". If you are running one direction, then pull the opposite of that direction, then Mario with turn on a dime. But if you're running at an angle, then pull at a not-opposite angle, then Mario with do the "donut" turn.

>Tall Tall Mountain
Amazingly fun level. You're retarded.
>Tiny Huge Island
Challenging, but still fun. It doesn't go easy on you, but you can still do a lot of random shit that makes it fun to explore.
>Wet Dry World
A bit more limiting than other levels. But still has some fun gimmicks in it. Like the bot that flips you up. The Chuckya, and using the canon to blast into the cave. Raising and lowering the water is also a novel premise.

It's interesting that you chose challenging levels to complain about though. Maybe the problem is just that you're shit at the game.

Inertia is a thing, user. The fact that SM64 has such an established community and Odyssey is able to keep up after being out for 2.5 years is a point for it, I think. Old enough for trenders to drop off but without the nostalgia and established community of SM64, and still even.

People can like what they like, I'm not trying to dunk on people who like older games. Super Metroid is my favorite game so I can't really throw stones because there are a great many parallels between that and SM64 on twitch, but I'm not trying to. I'm just saying that twitch popularity is a weird kind of context and a strange lens to view a game's popularity from.

>The fact that SM64 has such an established community and Odyssey is able to keep up after being out for 2.5 years is a point for it, I think.
Well yeah, Odyssey did alright. But the claim was that games(plural) have since outclassed Mario 64 in design. In fact, the claim was "it is comparably inferior to many of the games that came after". Many, huh? The why did all the other 3D Mario games fail to pull 1/10th of the numbers? Why don't all the other 3D Marios have a similar speedrunning scene? You're going to attribute this all to nostalgia? Ya know, Mario Galaxy is closer to Mario 64's release than current day? Where's the Nostalgia bonus for Galaxy?

The fact that Odyssey did as good as it did, only helped prove how badly the other Mario game failed.

Also, Super Metroid is better than Fusion and Zero Mission.

Niven was the boss

What did we do to deserve this, boomerbros? Why can't we leave this place? Our time has passed already. Zoomers have taken over.

I'm a fan of Galaxy's aesthetic, but SM64 did the transition from 2d to 3d way better than Galaxy implemented motion controls. I didn't mean to imply that SM64's rise to popularity with speedrunning was unrelated to its quality, because it being a quality game for sure helped. Speedrunning communities are weird organic things. I guess what I'm trying to say is that that the quality of the various 3D mario titles is closer in parity than the twitch viewcount would imply, not that SM64's twitch popularity isn't indicative of its being a quality entry.

In light of your metroid opinions I can't question your taste, though.

>the quality of the various 3D mario titles is closer in parity than the twitch viewcount would imply
I mean, maybe somewhat. But I think if you ask players which game they find most enjoyable to replay, it would be Mario 64, hence why it is the top dog.
> because it being a quality game for sure helped
Interesting how it's now a "quality game" When before it was "Its just clunky and hasn't aged well". And the other user said: "Nintendies pretend it hasn't aged like milk". You're doing a lil bit of backpedaling now.

Look, we needs SOMETHING to measure the claims by. We don't have statistical data of who enjoyed what game the most. And we can't do blind tests on people to see which game they think plays better. But what we can do, is measure how many people prefer to speedrun and watch one game over the other. Because that indicates which games people are attracted to in general. Like, who is to say mario 64 is clunky, when it's the most enjoyed game? Maybe it's just right, and the other games don't have enough clunk.

Goldeneye. Now that was a game

dibs on oddjob

no screenlooking you fuck

I'm 34 and like both Doom and Halo. Fortnite is absolute shit, though.

Why is the dad looking so old? He's only in his 30s.
