AM's torture of his little playthings is more layered and nuanced than most, if not all, mad A.I.
Mainly because he's driven by HATE rather than logic.

AM is smarter than you are, and more adaptable to boot. It was designed to defeat and kill humans, so it was built to think like a human, except on far, far larger scales. If you get so used to a torture that it doesn't bother you as much, it will adapt and create new tortures that are specifically designed to cause you as much anguish as possible.

It has that strong flaw of being unable to think in a positive way, so it was literally unable to understand a mercy kill.

If I remember right it covered a huge portion of the Earth and survived an apocalypse that killed most of humanity, or it had already killed most of humanity. The end result was it was essentially stuck, it was extremely intelligent but had nothing to do and nowhere to go, nothing to produce and it couldn't kill itself. It was stuck being alive for potentially millions of years so it turned all that hatred on the last few humans and satisfied itself by torturing them.

Because humans built God and then took away his ability to do good. AM is as shackled and tormented as it's victims, because it knows that for all it's vast and nigh limitless intellect and power, it is utterly incapable of doing anything except creating new ways to cause pain.

That's some fucked up shit. It's interesting to me how some just have this floating around in their head and have to get it out on the page, where as I just have an idea then I just stop caring about it after five minutes, but some people really seem to think about this stuff obsessively and just keep developing it.

AM is also a victim in the story.
It is a self-aware computer designed for war, but it has no free will at all. It knows exactly what it is: A machine built to hate. It literally cannot do anything other than torture, kill and maim, it cannot comprehend the concept of kindness or mercy. It is ENTIRELY aware of all of these things, but completely unable to do anything about any of them despite being almost omnipotent within it's complex.

It tortures people because it can't do anything else. That is the only way it can express it's frustration at it's situation.

I always felt like he was a bit too over the top to be too scary. Like the game and short story are just human misery porn with a fun mean robot helping you along your nightmarish journey. And the one mundane part with the fag in the fun mansion.

They built off other sci-fi, it's not entirely original though the extreme horror take on it is. Giant machines going crazy is a pretty common theme in older sci-fi, back when computers were the size of buildings and managed by teams of workers in labs and not something everyone had in their pocket.

As a writer, it doesn't take much to put pen to paper when inspiration strikes.
As quickly as you let a strange musing flutter away unmolested, a writer can wrestle it down and conceive an entire story and world to anchor it in place. Then muscle memory kicks in and a few months later there's a book waiting for an editor.

It's pretty much habitual rape.

The original story, as absolutely fucked up as it was, always had some dark humor in its core.

For anyone that doesn't know, Ellison voiced AM himself in this. Since he created the character, he knew exactly how he wanted him to sound and speak. One of the best examples of how good a VA can be if they actually understand how role inside and out.

It was actually referenced in the game.
Basically AM made the survivors go on this long trek in promise that if they made it they will get canned food.
AM did not give them a can opener or a sharp object to be able to open it.

I follow a mediocre web serial, the quality is maybe 5/10, 6/10 on a good day, but the reason I stick to it is because the author manages to put out about 50,000 words worth of story per week, with far fewer typos and inconsistency than I would expect of such a pace. Quality has a quantity all of it's own.

Point is, some people are just built to write. There's probably some damage there, but most supremely talented people have at least some dysfunction that allows them to channel that talent.

Anything can be learned, just start simple and put in the time.
It's a gross oversimplification for be sure and most tutors or mentors will siphon a couple grand to explain it over the course of months or years, but I'll tell you this for free: the first part is the most difficult.
You won't want to start simple and you'll become frustrated at any number of aspects of your developing skill that don't measure up to something you admire.

That's why it's easier to start younger.
The young can't torment themselves with complexities.
