danganronpa has been a breeding ground for weird degenerate fetish shit since the Something Awful days, when Tumblr was obsessed with it. Half the porn was yaoi, tumblr art faced girls with hairy armpits, some weird fetish where all the girls were boxes and stuck to each other, flattened, etc. It's unironically much, much better now that normies have been exposed to it. The normal art outweighs the weird shit these days.

The Something Awful translation was the only means of accessing the game. It got pretty popular in certain corners of the internet, notably Tumblr, and it became one of the main draws to SA at the time. I think the organic popularity the game demonstrated from that convinced someone somewhere to do an official localization of the game, which was ported to more viable platforms like PS4 and Steam. And then the anime showed up which made it mainstream. Then the third game came out around the time to capitalize on the popularity, it was just a series of events that imo started with Something Awful and it's popularity with Jap audiences.

Also the game has a visual presentation, music style, sense of humor, etc. that resonates well with a western audience. So realistically, how would you go about stopping a killing game?

For me, I'd try what the ultimate Imposter did in DR2. Get everyone in to stay in one place so you can observe them, come prepared with your "tools" and keep everyone in high spirits.
