My friend got to the archers and gave up, saying the level design is shit and there's no reason to keep playing. Is he right?

who gives a shit about you and your retard friend
Anor Londo is easily the place my mind first jumps to when thinking about dark souls, nothing from that generation will honestly blow me away like the first time we were brought up there, clearly intruding on this golden city made for Gods and Giants. That being said, I do think it's when the level design does start to tip into the bad, but I still think it's commitment to the world building came first and I forgive it for that.
He got filtered by the silver chads and would've given up at Ornstein & Smough
The game's level design (except for the rushed endgame areas ofc) is superb. All of the clever tricks it uses should be taught in level design courses. There's a bunch of lessons that the level design wants to teach to get players in the right mindset, but it's a harsh teacher. As an example, one lesson is about trying a different path if you can't make progress. This is taught as soon as a player gets to Firelink. What looks like the obvious path forward, the graveyard, turns out to be a dead end to a low level player who hasn't had much practice with the combat. The player will be punished every time they continue to slam their head against that wall until they notice that there's an alternate path up to Undead Burg, which is actually the intended path. The lesson is taught exclusively through level design, gameplay, and the player's own problem solving skills. Those are lessons that are the most engaging as well as the most memorable.
Many players have learned to approach new situations cautiously and not rush through by the time they get to the archers. Learning that caution is not applicable to all cases is what the archers are there to teach. They are defeated by madly dashing through and kicking the one on the right, which is the opposite of a cautious strategy.
I miss when the Remastered launched, trolling low level twinks in the undead burger all day youtube.com
Except this lesson doesn't apply in Anor Londo because you're forced to face the fag archer bros and can't find a way around them.
Anor Londo is easily the shittiest design I've ever come across. We don't ever have to walk across a flying buttress (or anything similarly obscure) at any point in Dark Souls before that flying buttress walk. Which means the only way you would know to walk across is thanks to people using the orange guidance soapstone.
So you cross the flying buttress eventually after reading someone's soapstone (or don't, if you're offline and have to look it up online) only to eventually come across two archers next to a flying buttress. There's no alternate path. You have to just keep running forward and hoping for good RNG and hoping for the knight on the right to act retarded and eventually walk off. All while getting shot in the back.
Shitty level design.
i guess op sent the thread to his friend.
I am OP's friend.
Btw I eventually got past the silver archers but that shit was literally aids and truly made me wana stop playing.
Ornstein and Smough were ez.
based retard. sorry you didn't get far but hopefully in a few days, weeks, months you will pick it back up and realize how bad you really were
took me 4 tries to get into the game proper. it happens
Literally just sprint to the one on the right. That is the strat, it's as simple as that.
Just roll once and then shield up
See
This is my 3rd time trying to get into the game. Sticking to it this time. Still salty at the archer bros. Shitty level design and I'll be sent to my grave with that opinion.
He's not wrong, Anor Londo sucks. Only thing good about it is aesthetics.
>Run past the archers, dodging the arrows since they dont track.
>Once at the top hug the wall while moving right. Rolling past any arrows the right side knight shoots.
>Move close enough so that the right side knight is agro'd into melee. At this range the leftmost knight will never hit you due to natural cover.
>Parry the knight.
>Riposte to send him off.
Works every time. You should now be able to continue you Dark Souls playthrough, friend.
fpbp
>got to the archers and gave up
Fair.
>the level design is shit
In some cases it's got some problems, yeah.
>there's no reason to keep playing.
Wrong.
You walk on beams in Undead parish. There's a broken window across the flying buttress and there's no other way to progress, you have to be a retard if you need an orange soapstone in order to find out where you're supposed to go.
Alternative paths aren't necessarily a good and the lack of them is not necessarily a bad thing. The dragon archers setpiece is a challenge you have to overcome just as bosses are a challenge you have to overcome. You don't have to rely on RNG if you're good.
As I said in Also rolling past right side knight's arrows causes you to get hit by left knight's arrows so that's just plain wrong.
>Remastered
literally soulless garbage
>literally just roll
I genuinely think this is the most retarded post I've seen on Yas Forums all year
What is bad about a port that makes it run better on console and keeps all the fucked up shit that made the game what it was intact? I'll literally wait.
False. The left Knight is blocked once you get to the top. It is a matter of then just rolling the right Knight's arrows and then killing him.
Beams, not flying butchresses
Also the broken window isn't really visible from the walkway down the first elevator.
Alternative paths are not my concern, but that's what the guy I was replying to brought up in Firelink. That doesn't apply in Anor Londo.
Just move into cover faster. Or dodge the left arrows. Shit ain't hard.
>made a level 20 dragon twink specifically for shitting on dark bead niggers
>only people i can find nowadays are actual solo hosts who are just boring to kill, or pluggers
>console
There's your problem.
Your friend has garbage taste. The level deisgn in DS1 is unparalleled. None of its sequels have even come close.
>you just got literally waited
Sick
your friend is yet another retarded casual with an ego that makes excuses
I don't even remember how I got past them. I didn't know how to parry and I definitely didn't kick them so I have no idea. I guess I just rolled past them or something?
Well he's right, he sucks dick yes
if he draws his sword when you get close I think I probably did that, then I backed up and then ran past them
Congrats that your fucking original PC port needs outsourcing and modsto make it function. At least the game runs on console even in it's first state.
This is a sad fact, I won't forget how disappointed I was twice that you just warp everywhere in 2 & 3.
>mfw completed the game many times yet still struggle on O&S
I don't even know why
>be Anor Londo
>be stunning and well designed level
>be widely acknowledged as one of the best levels in Souls history
>contrarians arrive as they always do
>mistake your clever use of enemy placement and environment design for artificial difficulty
>say that you're actually one of the worst levels over nitpicks like batwing demons falling off cliffs and the micro design being too large
Has Anor Londo reached the point of being underappreciated yet or do sane people still exist?
What makes dark souls levels so amazing is the fact that if you put most enemies in isolation they suck and are slow as hell with many openings but it's through some clever enemy placement and use of space that something becomes a really tight and difficult challenge. This is a great mark for good level design imo
Me but for Manus.
Everyone else is ez mode. Manus usually takes me like 3 tries.
I've played dark souls a total of almost 1000 hours across all save files and systems, and sen's fortress snakes still fuck me up.
Looks like someone is a brainlet
I agree. Good levels use a combination of enemy design and placement to create challenge. A great level uses the environment to create a unique challenge that tests you on more than mechanical skill.
For example, the Anor Londo Archers.
/thread. the archers never gave me a hard time. DS is easy even blighttown. lost izalith is cancer though
>Is he right?
Let's see:
>the level design is shit
Correct.
>there's no reason to keep playing.
False.
Your friend is just another angry guy that got filtered by an enemy he does't know how to fight. He should get back to the game, and then git gud by learning how to parry. Silver and Black knights will become trivial then.
You said anything similarly obscure. If you can walk on beams then it's not a stretch that you can walk on flying buttresses as well. And the broken window is visible before you descend down the stairs.
huh? so the pc version is the same. are you just yapping at him for playing a console? geez.. nice general pc-master-race argument (hope that made you remember you are better than console fags but must you just bring it up for no reason? you 12?), tho they were talking about something else. are you able to read and match arguments or you got some screws loose?
to be clear: never owned a console and probably never will
>be Anor Londo
>be stunning and beautifully designed level
>stunning and beautiful causes shit game design
>soulsfags consider it the best level because it's "difficult"
>gargoyles/imps falling off the sides easily
>giants easily baited to falling off
>way to beat archer bros is by making them fall off
>common way of dying to archer bros is falling off
>soulsbros go past the stage of anger
>acceptance
>"This is the best level design ever created in the history of gaming"
>fails to see all the glaring faults
Have soulsbros reached the point of Stockholm syndrome?
Even Blighttown was better than Anor Londo.
Attached: soulsbros saying Anor Londo is good.
I've literally never died to the Archers.
Same.
It's possible that I killed the one on the left first to give me time and space to think. I remember doing this but I don't remember if that was what got me through.
the graphics and gameplay are worse mate
Live stream you playing through Anor Londo on a new character right now. Prove it.
>gargoyles/imps falling off the sides easily
>giants easily baited to falling off
All Souls enemies are cheesable like this. It's a problem i agree but nothing unique to Anor Londo, besides the enemies are implied to be retarded.
>way to beat archer bros is by making them fall off
It's not if you're not a shitter. The silver knights are one of the easiest enemies to parry.
>common way of dying to archer bros is falling off
Yeah that's the challenge. Is the only acceptable challenge combat?
I think the user is telling the truth though otherwise he wouldn't be posting in the thread.
>soulsbros go past the stage of anger
>acceptance
I can't lie this made me fucking kek
One gameplay example?
>acknowledging this shitty level design
>excusing it
>Stockholm syndrome
Case closed
You really think someone is above that? Going on the internet just to tell lies?
Before I played DaS1 I used to fear Anor Londo because of the many webms I saw but when I actually played through it I may have died once or twice.
It's literally a SINGLE archer you have to dodge, for the rest just sprint.
You just conceded my points by not responding to them directly
I'm not going to argue with someone who doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about, and despite that defends poor remasters.
you just gotta run. the timing is deterministic so once you get it once or twice you breeze through 100% of the time. wait at middle pillar (safe area) until arrows land, then immediately run up. if you are running you will run past arrows, then at the top immediately run for the knight on the right. if you keep moving you will end up out sight/range of the other and now you justhave to deal with that one knight who will probably pull out its sword.
git gud fag
I am sure that's the reason
I did respond to them directly
I already made my case for them in the first reply I made
Just because you don't agree doesn't mean I conceded
I can just repeat what I said in the first post but I'm not
Good job knowing who is behind which post you fucking retard. I'm OP. I defended remaster. Because you're a fuckin shitter who literally has to derail conversation to say how much better a port that fucking NEEDS MODS TO FUNCTION is better than the remaster please actually kill yourself
Except that's not fucking real because I did exactly what you said. Running brainlessly to the one on the right still results in you getting hit by two arrows and you're still susceptible to the one on the left even after you make the archer bro on the right pull out his sword.
You're fucking retarded
Today OP was not only a faggot but a sperg.
I've never seen dead people posting here.
